Dragons at Crumbling Castle - a sort of book review.

Yeah, picked this up off Amazon as it was £6. And what it is, is - a collection of a very young Terry Pratchett's short stories written for his then local paper.

And you know, they're kind of charming. Theres the distinctive wit beginning to come through - and as one might expect from a much younger version of the man, it's a lot more gentle - but definitely shadows of it there.

If you've got kids in your life, definitely one for them to get reading - the stories are in a large enough print, and don't take many pages. Though confusingly, the illustrations aren't in fact by Quentin Blake, but somebody doing a very good take on his style! As a further thought - definitely worth a read for any kid who aspires to be a writer!

Officer involved shootings happen daily in the US, but in this case I actually know one of the officers who killed this man. Given the character of that officer (he's an *** who should have never passed a psych evaluation to even carry a weapon) I have very little doubt that this was an unjustified killing.

I also had no doubt prior to their "trial" that nothing would be done, as the justice system is corrupt beyond our imagination. Land of the free my lily white ***.

I have had some mates that have spent time inside for drug related offenses. From their description it is an awful place that no one would ever want to go. Some of the people they were locked up with and the guards were quite horrible. Instead of rehabilitation their record made it next to impossible for them to work after they got out and in the end some of them have gotten into far worse things then drugs. Basic needs prove to be stronger then their fear of prison. :(

Enthusiasm for End Times and WFB has taken a huge hit too so for the first time in 19 years or something I'm seriously considering giving up WFB and 40k. 40k has become boring as **** after some real promise with supplements and the like. WFB End Times has promise but I'm not confident in GWs ability to deliver, and I just don't give a **** about any of it anymore.

I know where your coming from EG, I just feel the new 40k codexes feels diluted. Fantasy I struggle with anyway. No one I know ever plays it.
At least when Mat Ward wrote a rule book it was fun.

Have to wonder what they were thinking, I mean the ydid to wyches what they did to Banshees, nerf an already average unit. Though Banshees were even worse off really but still its a terrible record.

Playing wise it goes in fits and peaks, before I moved house I was getting around a game every week (or more) since moving house I've been sorting all that out.

The trouble for me is that I love the setting but the bits I love most are getting completely neglected. Eldar, Dark Eldar, SoB etc. So with Fw just producing bland, uninspiring Imperium **** and GW making everything increasingly bland and BL just focusing on Marines it's just become thoroughly boring.

I recommend pen and paper RPGs then, unisystem is quite good as you can represent anything (hence why it's full name is unified system) and you don't have the imbalance of roled for states meaning you can build your character with a plan in mind, and you can make a universe entirely to your design if you want to have a universe where the matriarchal system was put in place instead of the patriarchal you can, want a world where humans never even existed and instead everyone is a sentient dinosaur (my dream reality) you can, unisystem just allows anything to be done, and it's always funny when someone completely botches their role and something really bad happens

Oh I forgot, even the eldar themed novels have been crappy. The craftworld eldar Path of... series was good even if teh ending was a bit crappy, the Dark eldar series started well but the ending was a ****ing disgrace and also killed off the only two women characters who had any character development.

I bought Super Dungeon Explore, not opened it yet. I'm waiting until I get to Canada next month. But the models look great fun to paint, the rules seem easy enough to follow and there is a good mix of characters and expansion packs. My kids will be able to play it which is a bonus.
I did get another copy of Space Hulk too, that's going to be more than enough 40k action for me and the clan and for £70 the minis are fantastic.
But as for playing 40k, it just ain't happening. Painting on the other hand. That's soon going to be daily :D

ha, I'll think I'll take the #winning part, I haven't played a game of WHFB since 1996 and 40K since 1992!

Yeah I still buy the figures and model and paint them, because I enjoy it, but playing the game, I have to agree the games have gotten far to bland lately, and bloated too rules wise, they really need to redo the whole system for both games from scratch like Wizards did with 3rd ed from 2nd ed D&D.

By streamlining and consildating the system, and using Black Library writers to fill out the rule books fluff wise, they could revamp the games in a big way.

Or of course they could go the print on demand and re-release all the old figures that way for their "Specialist" games and throw out the rule books as free (or very cheap IE £5 or less) downloads, get the older fan base back into the fold.

Well this is interesting, and promising (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29457044). Wonga to write off a large amount of debt - £220,000,000 to be precise, following discussion with the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority, not the Ferengi Commerce Authority)[url]

While it's bad things got to this stage, it is interesting to note that this is a voluntary decision by Wonga, albeit one feels the FCA might have leaned on them quite heavily.

So we have easily the biggest single short term lender in the UK being a least a little bit proactive in it's approach. Could be too little too late for many, but it's still heartening to see change in progress, and it being lead by a big player in the industry.

Big props to the FCA for being effective in this area, and respek to Wonga for not fighting the regulator every step of the way.

Nah, they think that him being a social freak is funny because "Nerds are such social idiots, ha ha!" and that's the whole premise of the show. Can't go ruining that by giving a reason for the main character to act like he does other than "He's a nerd, they're all ridiculous."

I don't think they're intentionally trying to trash the game, but I do think Kirby is trying to get as much cash as possible by trying to push out a lot of high-priced books and models ASAP. It's not exactly working as the most effective strategy, though.

Seriously though the only times I ever Played Warhammer 40,000 was during the Rogue Trader days, A friend at school brought the 2nd ed boxset, but on seeing ALL the rules split in 3 books, well we gave up and stuck to Warhammer, which was kind of funny since that old High Elf and Night Goblin set also had three books of rules :D

That's not to say though that I don't own the rulebooks, I DO own the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th edition rulebooks (the ones that came with each box set) just don't have anyone local to play against and I don't have the time to travel to get a game in....

the couple who made fake bomb detectors have received three and a half years for the husband, and community service for the wife. they endangered hundreds of thousands of lives selling fake devices to Iraqi security forces, and might have played a part in hundreds of deaths. and they have been found guilty of 'article fraud' as though they were selling knock off hand bags. this makes me absolutely incandescent with rage. Well, you can easily spot the people doing the rating who have gone school/uni/job there. Say the pay is poor, progression is poor, slagging off management etc.....

I have an ancient history degree, I know what happened historically. the films are not historical pieces. Rise of an Empire covers Xerxes becoming a literal god king, not a figurative one. He is still in Greece with his army, the threat is still there. It is set up for a sequel, otherwise he would leave at the end of the second film.

the first wasn't all horrible on that count (at least better than some, and definitely better than the second) - both the "kicked into a well" and the "we'll fight in the shade" scenes are taken from Herodot, who is our main source on the matter. Rise of an Empire on the other hand seemed to kinda make a point of directly going against Herodot in various respects... so yeah there's definitely the possibility of a third if they continue the trend... I just don't see any obvious battles/plots that remained uncovered in the first two, at least none that would warrant a movie of that kind... and the Athens vs. Sparta Peloponnesian War kinda lacks the whole Civilization vs. Barbarians vibe

I don't mind historical accuracy, A Knights Tale is one of my favourite films, I just hate Frank Miller and I really disliked the films though the first was marginally better. Cannot forgive the way they depicted and disposed of Artemisia, it was ****ing disgusting. She was an amazing ruler and military leader in an age when women weren't supposed to be either and to have her reduced to broken rape victim who is bad because men abused her was ****ing vile.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

That film has absolutely no right being anywhere near as good as it actually is! On paper, it sounds utterly atrocious. But damn it's an excellent film!

300 was in large parts pretty interesting and in large parts almost unwatchable especially the narration.

And if you would gather a military historian, a professional animal trainer, a guy with a time machine and an actual elephant that all would try to convince me that it is possible to drive an elephant over a cliff like that, I still wouldn't buy it.

Until you get to the end of the film and realize that it's literally a propaganda story told to pump up the other Spartans before the next battle. And the sequel has a nice touch of showing the Spartans as arrogant pricks from the perspective of the Athenians. Both movies make extremely good use of unreliable narrators.

Fun fact about the legend of the 300 Spartans (not the movie but historically) the Greeks sent roughly 20000 troops to stop the Persians and when the enemy discovered a way to flank them the spartan king ordered everyone else to retreat and defend their homes except his 300 personal guard and roughly 1000 troops refused to abandon the Spartans, and the battle was in the best case scenario for a small army to hold back a huge army

Also there where more professions in Ancient Rome/Greece that prohibited men from entering them then prohibited women from entering them, the only carrier a roman/Greek woman couldn't get was in the military, whereas men where banned from the majority of the priesthood (of all gods except solar invictus actually) and several other things, in fact until the tenth /eleventh century women where seen as more inherently holy/close to god then men because they could create life and men couldn't, it wasn't actually until the idea of original sin was conceived that Europian society started using the patriarchal system, before then inheretance worked with the first born son getting the fathers title and first born daughter getting the mothers title, and cooking wasn't performed on a household basis but at a community level with half a dozen or so people preparing food for the whole town for dinner, and women would also only care for children until the child learnt to walk and then would go back to working the field with their husband, I learnt this from a episode of a documentary series called divine women on history channel as nothing better was on, I've also watched a hour long documentary on cannibalism for a similar reason

Got a bit of a paggering in the US reviews, but it's pretty clear those knocking it didn't bother to read the source material. Some of them complained about Dredd's ever so slightly fascistic Police State, with one man Judge, Jury and Executioner - erm...yeah, yeah. That's definitely Dredd. You were expecting what, Another Another 48 Hours Buddy Cop Movie 2,563?

Another thing the negative reviewers missed - just how little enjoyment/satisfaction Dredd gets. He categorically does not get off on having to kill people. He's not doing it for kicks. The film really does get across that when Dredd says 'I am the Law', he very much means it. He's compassionless, relentless, and there to uphold The Law, regardless.

Though I still think it would have been better if he shot the two Juves :p

I caught Dredd on Netflix and thought it was an amazing movie. The marketing really was total crap...

On the under performing movie note, I thought Solomon Kane was really solid too.

Sigh.... now I'm all stoked up and feel the irresistible urge to watch both again today. :p

I've really enjoyed the last two films a lot although the second one had a host of problems... Rhino was an abomination, Goblin was treated as a throw away character with little development, Gwen's death was bungled... plus she was one of the best parts of the two movies and now she's gone. :(

I do seriously hope that they don't feel the need to reboot the series again. Garfield is quite amazing in the role.

I really like Rhino. He's very much a goon in the cartoons, much the same in the comics. Big tech suited goon worked for me :)

No problem with Rhino being a thug but I can't understand a word he says on screen... and the lull at the end where Spiderman takes over from Spider kid is far too campy for my liking. I've also never seen so many civilians laugh in the face of death either.

I found them far better than the original trilogy... although the 3rd film was so bad it may have colored my opinion of them all. Spiderman has always been one of my favorite comic heroes so I really want to see the movie universe work. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were both superb in the new series even though the stories had issues. Some on SONY, you can do it! :p

And you know, I think it's the baddies letting down The Amazing series. Lizard I couldn't give a fig about as a character, nor Electro to be honest. I just don't get much of a feeling of threat off them. Ditto Green Goblin. Preceding trilogy did much better with the villains, even if Spidey himself wasn't up to much (not counting Venom, on account I dunno what it was, but it was not Venom)

I usually have a 10 piece popcorn chicken bucket, 4 extra strips and 8 hot wings. Oh and gravy as it's rude not to. The kids have the popcorn chicken so I get 8 bits of chicken (2 for wife) 8 strippers (if only they lap danced too) and 8 hot wings, plus gravy. I don't do chips they are bad for you.

So a chicken that is not clearly male or female basically. Not always appearance based either, a friend has chicken that looks like a chicken but acts like a rooster including crowing and mounting other chickens.

If you want to get very technical the Anglerfish girsl start in an Ausf. D, upgrade the gun to a Ausf. F2 then with the side armour an Ausf. H. The Hippo's also have a StuG F.

And for Anzio (since EG was lazy :p ): Anchovy use a Carro Armato P 26/40, Carpaccio is in a Semovente 75/18, and Peperroni is in a Carro Veloce L3/35.

very simple. you get one Order Die per unit/vehicle, drop all the dice into a bag (you and your opponent) and draw one at random. whichever side's die is drawn gets to use it to activate one of their units. there are a total of six orders (one per die side, almost as if they planned it that way...) you can move and shoot, shoot, run, ambush, hit the dirt, and one other I can't remember right now. you put the die beside the unit/tank with the corresponding order face up and carry it out. rolling to hit and the like is quite similar to games workshop, and there is not a whole lot more to it. apparently a tank war game can be done in half an hour.

I could probably make a project log for my scratch built sandbag barricade that's going to have roughly 125 inches of 40k scale sandbags, though I plan to make a silicone rubber mould after sculpting the first emplacement and defence line and just use epoxy casting resin to make the full defence system

Yep thank god I took model and prop making in highschool, I know film and TV grade techniques and product names to help make my massive amount of sandbags, though that class was basically a way for the school to get cheap student labour to build the sets and props the drama department needs for plays
