He's obsessed with sex workers, he thinks modern men are terrible because they act like women and modern women are terrible because they act like men and he's just a terrible person in general. He tends to sexualise characters a lot and apparently subjects them to a lot of sexualised violence as well because realism or something.

More common than it should be and the justification for using lethal force is vague:
"Officers have long been trained to shoot to kill because that is the only way they say they can neutralize a threat. The idea of shooting someone in a limb is fiction."
"In all policy everywhere on force in any law enforcement agency in America, the bottom line statement should read: If you feel sufficiently threatened or if lives are threatened and you feel the need that you must use lethal force, then you must take out the suspect."
Firman said shooting to wound is impractical because "the likelihood of success is low." The officer may miss the target, leaving both the police and the public at risk, he said.
Officers are trained to assess the risk before firing, Firman said, but often a situation escalates quickly. A guide from his association on officer-involved shootings states that deadly force is legally justified "to protect the officer or others from what is reasonably believed to be a threat of death or serious bodily harm; and to prevent the escape of a fleeing violent felon who the officer has probable cause to believe will pose a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others."

And police are free to bring the hammer down on any group of people the moment them deem it to be a "riot"... another vague definition awaits!

Apparently the 'Land of the free' turns into a 'police state' at the drop of a hat. :(
I had assumed armed police in the Uk had a similar policy, until I asked my father about it (a bobby himself at the time). Apparently they don't shoot to kill or injure, simply to stop the threat. Exactly what that means depends on the situation, most likely a torso shot since it is the easiest part to hit and pretty much everyone stops being threatening when you put a bullet through their torso. This often turns out to be fatal, but they don't deliberately shoot intending to kill someone.

Police have an awful job that puts them in some impossible situations but the training here seems a little quick to justify lethal force. Plus citizens don't share the same blanket protection from prosecution that police have for using lethal force.

I don't know if it has been mentioned here already or not, this thread has moved quickly last few days. but apparently in Germany in 2011, with a population of 81 million people, police fired a grand total of 85 rounds. in America in the same year, 84 rounds were fired by police at a single individual in one incident.

Amazing! The US government (who keeps track of everything including as we now know individuals emails and phone conversations) does not track or report officer involved shootings. This is cause for suspicion in and of itself as it indicates they do not want the public to know these things. Here is an informal compilation from 2011.
http://jimfishertruecrime.blogspot.com/2012/01/police-involved-shootings-2011-annual.html
From the data gathered there were 1146 people shot by police in the US and 607 of them died.

yeah it is quite something. the approach is so different to that of Britain for example. I don't know why it is that guns have such a hold over the imaginations of people in the US. so many other countries get by without shooting random people in the street. and who the hell fires 84 rounds at one person? must be a police issued M60

Gun culture and violence both run deep in the US. personally I would be happy if they at least required gun safety training and started screening people who want to buy guns. It is sad that people with mental health issues have no problem getting a gun but face an uphill battle of getting treatment. :(

it is such a bizarre situation. most people in western nations are largely indifferent to firearms. why do the americans go so crazy over them? I don't know what makes otherwise normal, intelligent people foam at the mouth over guns and how amazing they are and how they are going to save everybody, one lethal round at a time. my american friend is a smart, left wing (for an american) guy, yet the fact that a police helicopter was over his town looking for an escaped criminal made him get out his pistol, **** it, and grab several loaded magazines (because obviously nine rounds aren't enough, you need at least thirty to stop a single criminal) and wait up all night in case the guy broke in...

Well this is a loaded topic... :p
I'll try to frame it with my own experience. I was born and raised in a rural part of the US where guns were imbedded in the culture. So much so that I was given a gun (and taught how to handle it) many years before I could legally drive... Seriously, how many people think it's a good idea to give a 10 year old a rifle? But that's how things were where I came from. Hunting, fishing and raising your own food were the way of life there. Every member of the family and community enforced gun safety and responsibility... and you practiced... a lot. I actually got pretty good at target practice but I was never one to shoot animals. Just didn't have the "killer instinct" or whatever it takes to kill living things.
Now move forward to the present. I haven't touched a gun in 2 decades and have no desire to use one for anything, yet the minute that the government mentions gun control my blood pressure goes through the roof...
Maybe its not wanting the government to take more freedoms away. The majority of the gun rights population does not trust the government.
Maybe its a cultural echo through history from when the country rebelled all those years ago. The War of Independence was covered with patriotic fervor in school so it has to have some impact on one's thinking.
...or maybe after having guns in your life from childhood you develop an irrational attachment to them like Linus and his blanket.
I honestly have no idea exactly why I have such strong feelings about this issue and I would be surprised if most people on either side of the debate truly know why they feel the way they do. I wish that they at least screened people and had mandatory safety training before selling weapons but it seems like that is even too much to ask at the moment.

also, apparently now people are collecting money for the cop who shot Michael Brown and started the whole affair so he and his family can handle any costs a possible law suit may bring... put that way it doesn't sound all that bad of an idea, but look at it another way and suddenly he's getting a reward for shooting Brown...

Britain has one of the best records in the world for road casualties. However, hundreds still die on the roads every year. In 2010, the police recorded 1,850 deaths, 22,660 people seriously injured and 184,138 who received light injuries.
About the map: Using official data recorded by police in Great Britain between 1999 and 2010, we have plotted every road collision in which someone died. In all, 36,371 fatalities are marked on this interactive map. You will also find partial data for Northern Ireland, for 2004-2009.
How the data is gathered: Detailed information about each crash is recorded by the police at the scene. It is subsequently transferred onto a computer database. This is available to researchers from the Economic and Social Data Service.
Missing data: As with any large collection of data, there will be errors and omissions. The BBC apologises for any distress or offence that may be caused by the inclusion of these errors. If you find any errors, please use the feedback form and let us know. We will endeavour to correct them where possible.

Most of those responses are **** though. I mean a lot of the complaints are bull**** too but it is clear from a lot of those that the people making the responses have no more idea of cultural appropriation than the people making silly comments. Also it was reblogged from someone who described their blog thusly:
Feminism has been taken over by privileged, radical leftist women who do not give two ****s about women facing actual oppression. Since a popular slogan for them to yell at men is "check your privilege!", it's time we started calling them out on their own privilege and sense of entitlement.
Which kind of tell you who this sort of **** is aimed at.

Yup, but some of those are still missing the point. Cultural appropriation of Japanese or Indian culture might not mean much to a Japanese or Indian person but it could impact on Japanese Americans or Indian Americans who get fetishised and objectified as a result. The responses that go like 'Indian culture isn't going to disappear because Britney in Ohio wears a sari' are completely missing the point as much as people complaining about a white woman in India being given a sari to wear by her Indian friends are.

It doesn't matter. There will be no response. We have learned that if you wish to stop military persecution then you need to make sure that
a) The country has mineral resources that can be exploited
b) The country's military is at least a decade (preferably more) out of date.
The US do not want a war with Russia, they barely want to be involved in stopping ISIS
NATO do not want a war with Russia, they barely want to be involved in stopping ISIS and several member countries cannot economically start a war.
Once they are entrenched nothing will shift them, short of vitrification and no one wants that. Especially over a country that is economically and geopolitically unimportant.

When you die, it's time to see a man about a God, and get another one.
Every Renewal event (big one I've just been too) you survive also grants a Veteran Ability, giving you more stuff your character can do.
I started out as a fairly generic fighter, with a smidge of healing magic. I have now diversified into Crafting, so I can make stuff, plus two odd skills, Forage and Scrounge - those get me items I can sell or use. Next event I get another, and not 100% sure what I want to take. Might boost up my Crafting, as I can do more.
In particular, want to catch and skin something with Natural Armour, see if I can make a more effective light or medium armour, as any heavier and you can't cast.... Reckon might need some Ritual Magic, but if I can offer that protection, it's totally worth it. And I'll be able to sell such for a fethtonne of munneh!!

Even though Wilson has not been arrested, supporters say the funds will be used to cover his legal fees. Within seven days, the page raised $234,910 from 5,901 people. It was closed on Aug. 22 after reaching its goal.

when people complained to gofund me as a breach of ToS:
http://31.media.tumblr.com/46f07aaa188e6d968e3641c5f736253a/tumblr_naq3qn3iCq1tw589oo8_1280.png
When called on this, and how it violates their ToS, GoFundMe’s response was to delete the hateful, disgusting, racist comments from the donations. They refused to end the campaign. Apparently it is only “promoting hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime” if people can see the deplorable sentiments behind the donations (don't forget GFM gets a 5% cut).
A new fundraising page, “Support Officer Wilson,” was opened on Aug. 23 by a local police union. In two days, it has raised more than $130,000 from 2,973 people. Supporters also recently held a rally outside a St. Louis’ local news station, selling T-shirts with the message “Officer Darren Wilson. We Stand By You. 8-9-14.” The T-shirts, on sale for $20, reportedly sold out.
The second fundraiser lists it as beign by "Shield of Hope", but that is actually Missouri Police Union’s 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, who are acting as an intermediary for Darren Wilson so that people can donate tax-free. The Ferguson Police Department is directing people to send donations to it.
Darren Wilson, who is still employed and currently on paid leave (tho technically it’s not “leave”. He’s still listed as being on active duty) has been donated more money than the Michael Brown memorial fund (http://www.gofundme.com/justiceformikebrown?_ga=1.127070285.1735433001.140 9058993) - which is supporting the Brown family with legal costs and other expenses.

At Ferguson the people are still protesting, police raided the town's chuch several times that had been set up with medical supplies to take care of people who had been gassed, with the police "seizing" food and medical supplies for reasons (ie the police walked into a church and robbed it).
They also established that the first amendment is limited:

the above being the designated media area.
And speaking of media the NY Times writer has admitted his article was perhaps not well worded (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/25/ny-times-michael-brown-mistake-john-eligon_n_5711147.html).

yeah, one that I saw yesterday, reposted by an American friend on Facebook, was a photo of an American veteran who died with the facts listed under it such as no White House officials attending his funeral, being compared to Michael Brown's funeral. a supposedly violent thief who assaulted an officer, where three White House officials attended. so right wing idiots spinning it as the government supporting violent offenders and ignoring veterans...

Just had a flashback to Sunday night....
In the Fir Cruthen camp, having drunk a lot and helped to portray Bushman (standing in a bush, shaking the branches and hurling taunts at passers by). And Lady Fear walks in. Having seen what she can do (kills with a touch), I take a gamble when she singles me out, and drop to one knee, and answer everything with 'yes my lady'. Suffice to say, lived to tell the tale. Which is ace! There's not many can make the same claim!

I will be totes pissed off if after the WFB End Times releases we don't end up with a bunch of new women models and more representation. This is the ideal time to do it while not making it a bit issue and pissing off all the fanboys (not that I would care if they did, but GW might worry). So much potential there, radical reshaping of the Warhammer world, lots of older, male characters dropping like flies, huge pressures on everyones militaries, ideal time to bring in more women in characters and regiments but my worry is we will end up much the same situation was before.:(

Nope. lots of male characters have snuffed it, only one female SC who used to have a model has snuffed it so far and a bunch more have been given bigger profiles. I'd like to think they are going to replace older, less popular SCs with new and hopefully mostly female SCs to shake everything up but I'm worried I'll be disappointed. There is so much potential with this shake up of WFB and it would be a shame to see it wasted.

Can't be doing with the nimby lot. Where exactly do people expect their energy to come from or people to live?
Wolfshade
09-02-2014, 05:58 AM
Well no.
I like the comment one person made "why do they have to put this industrial thing in the country side?"
but the sommerset levels are really good for solar farms, the land is very flat, above average sunny days (what with bodmin moor taking most of the cloud and rain from the south westerlies).
Psychosplodge

Still nuclear is the real way forward, backed up with gas turbine and hydro.
Wolfshade
09-02-2014, 06:11 AM
Yes, one only has to look at Germany for their brilliant solar projects (see previous) to look at how bad and ineffective solar is.
Offshore wind I think has potential, as long as it does not damage marine habbitats, infact they could be used to create artificial reefs to protect marine life, hmm that's a thought.
Psychosplodge
09-02-2014, 06:14 AM
I think the easiest way to do offshore is use the oil/gas platforms as they become redundant as they're already there...
They're potentially hazardous to birds though.

09-02-2014, 06:15 AM
Solar is good for supplementing power supplies and there are some nifty developments like clear solar panels that could replace window glass but you are still going to need nuclear to generate the vast amounts of cheap energy modern economies need.

Wolfshade
09-02-2014, 06:30 AM
Whilst I think Iter is good, and indeed is the most traditional form, there is another experiment (can't think of its name at the moment) that uses laser beams to collapse pellets of material together (through light pressure) and that I think will be more viable initially.
If we can build in solar into everyday things then it would be great, you know like roofs, windows etc. And build houses with proper insulation (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25403897 there is another one which just uses passive heat rather than needing heating per se). Water capture for flushing / watering the garden
Yes the cost is higher than normal to begin with, but it will pay for itself in time, it isn't like a washing machine that is replaced every 5-10 years. These things can last for centuries.

Currently planning a booze cruise over to That France, with a side step into Belgium to pick up dead cheap tobacco. In the UK, 50g of Golden Virginia (lasts me two to three weeks) sets me back around £19 a pouch. In Belgium? Around £5. Reckon if I spent £100, that's me pretty much set for a year! Well, outside Rizla and Filters of course.
Gonna take some friends and get us some bargains, all in time for Chrimbo. Which is nice. And provided I don't kill us all driving in Foreignland.

Fair point.
Also need to let my Insurer know I'm going on a day trip. Won't cost me anything, but to not do so could mean they refuse a claim. Also quite aware from my time dealing with Foreign Claims for the same Insurer that in France, the burden of proof is on the non-fault party, because those crazy Frenchies just have it that way because reasons. So whereas in the UK if someone rams into my rear (oooh, missus!) they have to prove I reversed into them, in France, I'd have to prove I didn't reverse into them.
Silly Frenchies and their lack of logics!

Essentially, it seems as long as the car isn't stacked to the gunnels with just me in it (going with at least two friends) we'll be fine and dandy. I know Mr Martypants isn't a smoker, but then I do believe his Mum may be, so it's possible we'll be using his 'allowance' for her.

Confession Time: I’ve never had Nutella. It’s one of those things where I’m just dubious as hell, despite enthusiastic endorsements. I’m just not food adventurous, what can I say.
Mum and i were in Costco last week though and she was “OO NUTELLA”. But of course this is in Costso proportions, so it’s like two separate thousand gallon buckets for five bucks or something, I don’t know. Anyway, she wanted it, but not TWO, so I agreed to split it with her.
I’ve been thinking about it on and off since. This afternoon, I feel brave.
