Detached is a huge improvement over adjoining walls but you can still have 'that neighbor'. We have 1/2 acre in town and the guy next door manages to spend every free hour mowing, leafblowing, weedeating or generally just making noise. I swear that one of these days that leaf blower is going where the sun doesn't shine! Now we're looking at a 100 acre mountain property spread to get away from the noise hell of the city.

Depends heavily on location as even mountain property can be pricey. Lucky for us, we both grew up in West "by God" Virginia and the mountain property there is still relatively cheap. 100 acres will eat ~$250k USD plus whatever we want to spend on building the house. We both love crafts so we are looking at house designs that have our "play" room being the majority of the entire house.

house prices are pretty high over here by and large. not quite London high, but usually not that far off. because the island is so small as well, you don't really get cheaper areas to live. it can often be the opposite way round to England as well, where being outside of a town actually puts prices up, because you are still only no more than half an hour away from the city, whilst having the benefits of space etc.
40kGamer
11-24-2014, 05:31 PM
House prices get really weird here. Some mountain areas like Wyoming have super high prices even though you are literally in the middle of nowhere. Our home state of West Virginia is a pricing anomaly. You are so-so close to a lot of major metros on the East coast but near nothing... reminds me of the Jack of All trades saying. Still 100 acres with a 2500 square foot house will probably run ~$500k. It is actually quite expensive to build your own road into a property that large and mountains are notoriously costly to work with. At the end of the day the heightened privacy supports the price tag.

got a Bolt Action Hetzer yesterday, amazed how small they are, hadn't occurred to me that they wouldn't be 28mm scale. quite nice to have something in a different size though, and it allows a lot more movement on the table if the models are smaller. unfortunately though the bottom of the hull has been cut for some reason, perhaps trying to remove resin lumps, and the entire underside of the hull slopes from left to right looking at the front, so the left hand tracks don't have enough material to actually be glued to.

Genocide of natives and slavery ofblack people, and their lives are devalued more than anyone's. I mean you have white people in America right now literally saying 'but Mike Brown stole some cigars worth five dollars' as justification for his murder. Because a black mans life is worth less than five dollars worth of cigars apparently. Nevermind that he paid for them. Not only that but the cop who executed him has been rewarded with over one million dollars.
Wolfshade
11-27-2014, 03:11 AM
Anyone who happens to be in any outgroup is devalued. Just look at the number of people that are killed by being run over and how few of those are ever prosecutted, and yet the narriative that is reported is that the pedestrian dashed out or something like that there is always an excuse, "oh it was low sun" or some other excuse and the killer walks away without an endorsement the police don't investigate it correctly. But have someone steal something or damage property and boom they are all over it like a hot rash. We live in a society that values stuff over lives, that much appears to be universal.

And even if you could, why should you. Or are you saying that descrimination against people that can't change what they are discriminated against are worse than those that choose to be in certain outgroups?

Lawrence O’Donnell, an MSNBC dude, just revealed that the prosecutor’s secretary gave the jury an outdated statute that states that police officers can shoot and kill a fleeing suspect simply because they are fleeing. But that was ruled by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional in the 1970s. She gave them an updated copy. When the jurors asked her if Supreme Court rulings override state rulings (for which the obvious answer is yes), she told them “don’t worry about that” instead of saying yes. She told them that they could still use the outdated statute, but that something in it was wrong. She never told them what part of the statute was wrong. She just said “DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT”
SHE GAVE THEM AN OUTDATED STATUTE THAT SAYS A POLICE OFFICER CAN DO EXACTLY WHAT DARREN WILSON DID, AND INSTEAD OF TELLING THEM THAT THAT PART OF THE STATUTE WAS WHAT WAS INCORRECT, SHE TOLD THEM NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT.
HERE IS A LINK TO THE VIDEO!!
This is how the Grand Jury arrived at their verdict. Early on in the proceedings, Assistant District Attorney Alizadeh handed out copies of a law that was ruled unconstitutional in 1985. In essence it set the bar for use of excessive force lower than is permissible. Simply put, ADA Alizadeh told the jury that it was permissible to shoot a fleeing suspect.
--
Tennessee v. Garner made the statute Alizadeh distributed to the Grand Jury unconstitutional, but that didn’t stop her from distributing it to grand jurors at the outset in order to set their minds in a place where Darren Wilson was justified in what he did.
http://crooksandliars.com/files/images/14/11/screenshot_2014-11-26_20.41.23.png
Then, at the very end of the proceedings on November 21st, Alizadeh “corrected” the record. Sort of.
http://crooksandliars.com/files/images/14/11/screenshot_2014-11-26_21.43.15.png
For the entire proceeding, jurors weighed the evidence in light of a law that was deemed unconstitutional almost 30 years ago. Then they corrected the record at the very end

Out of interest Gott, do you know why the presecution didn't raise an objection at the start about this?
This also highlights a problem where court rulings change laws, but "law" law isn't updated to meet "case" law.
Part of me is uncomfortable with laws being written and revised by unelected officials...

The thing is, because of "case law" legislation doesn't NEED to be updated. the precedent is set and that is just a strong or stronger that legistlation

Oh I know that it doesn't need to be, but it would be much easier if it were. That way when you start any preceedings you would be comparing law and relevant case law and it would be altogether. Rather than getting the law as wrote and then searching in a large pit for any relevant case law which may or may not be over looked (deliberately or otherwise).

That was the prosecution. The chief prosecutor is president of a group that raised money for Darren Wilson. Basically every analysis of the prosecution by bar associations and legal experts has said it was almost as if given by a defence attorney.

(Civil rights attorney/MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Bloom)
Not only all that but the police said Mike Brown was 35ft away from Wilson when Wilson shot him, thus as he "charged" he feared for his life. He was actually 148 feet away. (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/11/20/1346374/-BREAKING-VIDEO-Police-Lied-Mike-Brown-was-killed-148-feet-away-from-Darren-Wilson-s-SUV)
More on the "prosecutor":
One might give McCulloch (the prosecutor) the benefit of the doubt, if not for his background. His father was a police officer killed in a shootout with a black suspect, and several of his family members are, or were, police officers.
His 23-year record on the job reveals scant interest in prosecuting such cases. During his tenure, there have been at least a dozen fatal shootings by police in his jurisdiction (the roughly 90 municipalities in the county other than St. Louis itself), and probably many more than that, but McCulloch’s office has not prosecuted a single police shooting in all those years. At least four times he presented evidence to a grand jury but — wouldn’t you know it? — didn’t get an indictment.
One of the four: A 2000 case in which a grand jury declined to indict two police officers who had shot two unarmed black men 21 times while they sat in their car behind a Jack in the Box fast-food restaurant. It was a botched drug arrest, and one of the two men killed hadn’t even been a suspect.
McCulloch at the time said he agreed with the grand jury’s decision, dismissing complaints of the handling of the case by saying the dead men “were bums.” He refused to release surveillance tapes of the shooting. When those tapes were later released as part of a federal probe, it was discovered that, contrary to what police alleged, the car had not moved before the police began shooting.
Also note that despite being called a trial it wasn't to find Wilson guilty or innocent, but to determine if there was enough conflicting evidence requiring deliberation, or direct evidence of a crime being committed. Most Grand Jury trials take a day or less, have half a dozen witnesses and do not have the defendant present. This one took 25 days, had 80 witnesses, and Wilson was interviewed for four hours alone.
Also also out of around 100,000 grand jury trials only 100 or so have not gone to court. Except in the 81 involving police, where only one has proceeded.

it will always be far more important to them that police officers can kill people freely, than victims get justice. they will have been worried that if Wilson were prosecuted, the floodgates would open and police would have to do things like use reasonable force, or think about their actions. that might make them hesitate to kill, and people would therefore worry about their safety. it is the same with Zimmerman, far more important that stand your ground laws remain than a victim gets justice.

No, because it's not a trial as one usually thinks of it to determine innocence or guilt, but more like a committal hearing to determine the strength of the evidence that there is a reasonable case to go ahead with. I believe the US is the only country to still use them.

What worries me in cases like this or the Mendez trial in the uk. Even where there aren't any procedural issues, there is always the feeling that the establishment will protect the establishment and so there will be those who do not accept the outcome of the trial even if it were without controversey.
I am not sure in such occassions what can be done. Well other than making sure every trial is transparent and everything is proper.

The 'rioters' also torched Mike Browns church. Why on earth would supporters of Mike Brown torch his church? It is however a long established KKK tactic, and the current head honcho of the KKK admitted to having links with Ferguson police on television before backtracking and trying to say he had friends who knew people.
The decision not to indict was never in doubt, people on social media have been talking about it and the prosecutors links to Ferguson police for over a month. The riots didn't erupt when the decision came down, they erupted when police attacked the peaceful vigils and protests.

Yes indeed. Not a trial and only used to determine if there is a sufficient reason to have a trial. The prosecutor has almost complete control over what is presented to the Grand Jury so they can basically determine the outcome before it even starts. This was nothing more than a dog and pony show.

Believe it or not, when a grand jury spends nearly a full month interviewing over 60 witnesses and all the physical evidence the can find and release a detailed 4,800 page document containing all the testimonies and evidence, they generally don't reverse their decision due to a few politically motivated tweets.
That said, this was only one of several investigations. The FBI is independently investigation this as a civil rights case, and the local prosecutor has nothing to do with that one.

11:54 a.m. Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson leave Ferguson Market and Liquor. Surveillance video shows Mr. Brown stealing some cigarillos. They walk along West Florissant Avenue and then in the middle of the street on Canfield Drive.
False. The owner of the store has said that while he did argue with Mike Brown over some cigarillos they were not stolen, Brown paid for them, and he never called the police (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/08/18/1322560/-Ferguson-Store-Owner-Says-NO-ONE-From-His-Store-Called-Cops-To-Report-Cigar-Theft).
Which makes this:
He sees that Mr. Brown fits the description of a suspect in a convenience store theft.
A complete lie. In fact the Ferguson police chief retracted his statement Wilson knew of the theft (which didn't actually happen) and said the traffic stop was because "they were walking down the street blocking traffic".

You also seem to think the medical records don't show that Wilson had been struck, or know anything about the actual timeline of events based on the physical evidence. It's easy to be right when you believe only what you want to hear. I'm going to generally believe the NY Times over someone who pulls their opinions from heavily biased sources and who made up their mind on guilty long before seeing any evidence. You want to convince anyone? Don't quote some random person's snarky tweet. Make the effort to read the grand jury document and explain, in great detail, using verifiable sources that are as unbiased as possible.
Edit: though I think you are correct that they didnt call 911 at the store and wilson had no knowledge of the robbery. So that is one minor error. The grand scheme of events in that article is pretty strongly backed up by the physical evidence and several eye witness testimonies.

The officer drove by, saw brown had paid for his cigars, so he whipped out his pistol and shot brown. The witnesses statements were broadly consistent with one another and the forensic evidence, it should have gone to trial which is what the grand jury decided was unnecessary. Something they do in 0.004% of cases put before them. Also the prosecutor has KNOWN ties to Ferguson police, is KNOWN to be involved with a fundraiser for Darren Wilson, and has been condemned by the American Bar Association for not doing his job properly.
Darren Wilson referred to Brown as 'it' 'beast' and 'demon' in his statement, that doesn't sound racist at all though?
Mike Brown was unarmed. This is fact. Mike Brown did not attack Darren Wilson. This is fact. Mike Brown fled from Darren Wilson. This is Fact. Mike Brown committed no crime. This is fact. Mike Brown was shot multiple times in the chest and head while unarmed after fleeing and offering no aggressive action according to all the eye witnesses. This is fact.
It should have gone to trial, it is simple as that. It didn't because nine white people on the grand jury decided it was fine for a police officer to murder an unarmed, innocent black man who was fleeing from him.
The situation is not complex, the onyl people who think that are white people who care more about the reputation of a white police officer than the life of the teenager he gunned down in the street.

Ok let me explain some more:
The point of this case going to the grand jury was to decide whether there was a reason for it to go trial, or if there was clearly no case to answer. There is a clear need for more investigation, I think you can agree since 'contradiction' seems to be a thing you're going for at the moment. The grand jury decided Wilson had no case to answer, no need for a trial.
So let me ask you this:
Given that in a case where a police officer gunned down an UNARMED black man who had committed NO CRIME the police officers testimony is contradicted both by the eye witness accounts and the forensic evidence, do you think there should have been a trial to establish guilt or innocence?
Yes or no. Should there have been a trial.
I say yes, the American Bar Association say yes, many, many other experts say yes.
It's not about declaring him guilty, its about whether it should have gone to trial. THAT is what is in dispute here.

Ummm what?
I've never denied Wilson was struck, or that there was a confrontation, or even that Mike Brown was possibly even in the wrong in this part of the confrontation. What I have questioned is the fact that the Ferguson police have repeatedly been shown to change their version of events (robbery, not robbery. Shoplifting, not shoplifting. Brown was armed, not armed), failed to interview eyewitnesses, lied about facts (they have insisted for the entirety of it that Mike Brown was 35 feet away when killed, when the fact is he was over 130 feet away), and attempted to suppress any coverage of events - this is the police force who attempted to get all reporters confined to a "second amendment area" and teargassed ones who left it; covered their badge numbers; grabbed people off the street and held them without charge, saying to protest leaders they would be released without charge if the protesters dispersed.
No reason to go to a full trial?

Assuming the case is that of Laylah Petersen which I found after a quick googling, the police have pledged to find the killers and send them to jail. As opposed to Ferguson where they KNOW who the killer was and have literally declared martial law, trodden over citizens constitutional rights, attacked peaceful protests with military grade equipment, fired tear gas and rubber bullets at press at protesters and behaved illegally to protect him from even going to TRIAL let alone prison.

He didn't rob a store (according to the store owner, who should know better than anyone) and he didn't assault a police officer (according to most witness accounts) and gang members tend to be what we call 'criminals' while police officers, stop me if this is too advanced for you, aren't supposed to murder people. Like, you know, criminals.
So take your racist lies and shove them up your ****ing arse.
So............things you find on the internet make you an expert on this stuff? Also i fail to see how this stuff is anything new to people considering it has been happening for over 100 years in the USA and suddenly everyone is getting more upset over this then Russia constantly attacking another country...........Interesting.
Edit: Also a mod should probably close this thread before its gets even more out of hand no one will agree on this one way or another. (Plus i fail to see how calling people racist gets anything solved.........Its just kinda sad really that you think you can scream racism at other opinions to win)

This is the oubliette... we don't typically moderate down here because of the nature of the forum. That said, I've had the same post reported by several people in the last 24 hours so I feel I have to issue a reminder:
I know conversations can get heated, but refrain from screaming insults at one another. Walk away from your keyboard, get some air, scream into a pillow; whatever you need to do to calm down before you decide to post. And, as always, you don't have to respond.
Just calm down. Take a breath.
If you can't do that, please take it to PMs or email or your blog... just not here.

Me and a group of mates are preparing for a game of "Star Wars: the roleplaying game" where we just mess around around the time of one of the major conflicts, we are getting given a old rust bucket merchant ship and crew, then we're just gonna do some smuggling or legitimate trading, though there's been talk of trying to find and repair a abandoned separatist battle droid factory and making a nice little empire in the outer rim.
Anyway my character is called m4k7 and looks like this

Also at a unisystem session over the weekend the other three party members had a really funny death that I avoided by virtue of heading in a different direction alone.
Ok so they where playing as a trio of lumberjacks that absolutely hated trees and anything made from trees, they barely tolerated their wooden axe handles (I was a ninja gnome and had forgot to buy any survival gear unlike the others) and as they traveled down from the mountains they cut down every tree they found (didn't collect the wood just felled the trees) and then as soon as the sun set the three brothers dumb (they had just over human average intelligence when added together) set up their tent, took off their armour and cloths, climbed inside the tent and went to sleep, didn't take turns watching for danger just all slept at once, well they where in the territory of a bastiladon (I think that's what it was) which was very angry at finding its forest half cut down, it ripped apart their tent waking them up, they grabbed their axes and tried to fight it (still naked) first it knocked the most injured unconscious (we'd only just escaped a dungeon we started in) then it killed another in one hit and gored the last to death with its spikes, so they all ended up dead, half eaten and naked somewhere in the mountains, meanwhile I was eating a dinner of eagle eggs and eagle boiled in their own nest, sharpened my knives (a obsession with which I took as a drawback) and had a good nights sleep hidden in a crevice

Do wish people would stop stressing about price. It is what it is. You are either willing and able to pay, or you're not.
Me? I'm looking at having to save hard for around 5 years to get a deposit for a flat together, and then 25ish years of paying off a mortgage. Only because renting is ultimately money down the drain.
Beer is up to £3.60 a pint in my local. Pricey, and there are cheaper alternatives, but I like that pub so I pay their asking price. If I didn't, I wouldn't. Not much room for argument there.

Gotta account for outliers and supply & demand there mate. Fanatics might pay a ridiculous price but make up a small % of potential customer base. A large print run may lead to people thinking 'I'll just pick it up later' while dancing out the door with some other impulse purchased limited hotness. Luxury goods are walking a tightrope for sure.

The only way that the scalpers will make money is if they are limited edition, in which case we are only talking about a tiny fraction of their customer base anyway so they can gouge the fanatics.

Lisa Bloom, (Gloria Allred’s daughter) is an attorney, author, CNN legal analyst, and founder of general-practice law firm The Bloom Firm. Let me just tell you it’s nice to see an actual lawyer reading McCulloch and his team for filth. These words aren’t more valuable because she’s a white woman, but it’s certainly heartening to see white allies publicly denouncing that miscarriage of justice.

Edit: I mean call me old fashioned, but I don't think any government department has any business having the ability to kill unarmed citizens with impunity. But funnily enough the notion of government accountability seems out of fashion with most libertarians these days who seem content to ignore government oppression of others so long as they are left to their white, middle class devices.

But black people who are genuinely oppressed get met with militarised police with automatic weapons and armoured vehicles if they so much as peacefully protest the killing of an unarmed black man by a police officer. Oh and white people get to riot and cause millions of dollars damage because their football team loses or because it is Halloween without a heavy police presence too, funny that.
I doubt the truth is anywhere near the middle, the vast inconsistencies between the police officers account, most eyewitness accounts and most importantly the actual physical evidence indicate his account should be treated with great suspicion. Which is precisely why it should have gone to trial.

I thought the reason for bear arms was to hold government to accountability?
Mixed bag this one. Right or wrong, most people bear arms to give them a sense of security in their home. Especially when you live rural and the nearest police help is 20 minutes or more out even when you call. And most who live rural would rather deal with things themselves rather than involve the police as they tend to be more anti authority.
For others it is for sport. Either just a gun enthusiast or a throwback hunter.
Speaking of throwbacks, a small amount of people still belong to citizen militia's. :)
and then there are those who ascribe to Jeffersonian thinking and attach to his quote that
"When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
though my impression of solicitiors is at an all time low
Lawyers of all forms are a blight on society. The law is a necessary evil but too many follow the law with no concern for ethics or morality.

Those with the money, intelligence and influence to potentially use firepower against the government are also intelligent enough to realize that there are safer and more profitable ways to manipulate events. Plus it's not like the government actually runs the country anyhow.

Of course, but the whole ideological rationale for the right to bear arms is defense against guvmint tyranny. Leaving aside that is a ridiculous premise when the guvmint has the armed forced with highly sophisticated weaponry and armour at its disposal, the only people who really get to benefit from readily available guns are white men and criminals.

But it's a nice sentiment and an easy battle cry to rally the ignorant masses. Everyone who manipulates events realizes the power of a simple line of reasoning. Even if that line of reasoning is ultimately flawed it can still yield results.

Gosh who to believe, the boy on the internet or the practising high profile lawyer with her own legal firm...
Yeah I'm going with the expert..
Er... you really should go read the grand jury report. Like, Bloom claimed they never asked wilson if Brown had raised his hands. The witness testimonies record his response to that exact question as "no, absolutely no", however. Several other witnesses were asked if Brown raised his hands, and several of them claimed they never saw Brown raise his hands, either. One went as far to say "people keep asking if Brown raised his hands, and no he didn't." The only witness that I found who actually did claim brown raised his hands said this:
Q: You previously testified that you were not present and only heard about the event from others. Did you see Brown raise his hands?
A: yeah, Brown was on his knees begging with his hands in the air and Wilson just walked up and shot him in the head."
She claims that Wilson was not injured, or that his injuries were not possibly serious enough to reflect that he was punched in the face. Photos of Wilson show noticable swelling and redness, and medical records reflect that. Some people, myself included, do not bruise. When I broke my leg, the only noticeable injury was a slightly swollen ankle. And, if you've never been punched in the face before, it hurts but half an hour later it's just going to be a little tender. It's only a lasting injury if you get a concussion or a broken facial bone. So I'm not even sure what angle she was trying to take with those comments, but unless Wilson tripped and fell down some stairs on the way over, he got punched in the face. Which, incidentally, is exactly why his lawyer told him to go to the hospital to ensure there were medical records reflecting this.
Several of her comments are just vague statements like "no one asked him any tough questions". Since they spent 4 hours asking him in detail why he shot Brown, I'm not sure what sort of "tough questions" they left out.
She critisizes Wilson and the police for not testing the gun for fingerprints and for Wilson washing his hands, but ignores that they have DNA evidence of Brown's blood on Wilson's sleeve and all over the inside of his patrol car and that Brown had a gun**** wound to the hand consistant with holding the slide of the gun when it went off.
Some of her criticisms may be valid, but several of them are factually incorrect, some present only a misleading snapshot of the complete picture, and some of them are purely statements of personal opinion rather than a professional analysis of the facts. Between her tweets and the grand jury evidence, Illgo with the grand jury evidence.
