Just got another interview offered for another job

Only problem is they'd expect me to go down to Plymouth, by myself for it, and possibly pay for it myself. Factor in a early start, and the earliest train getting in after it, it'd have to be the day before.

So do I pay £100+ to go to interview that I don't think I'll get and am not sure I want, or do I turn it down and hope that I actually get the one i did yesterday. But in turning down an interview run the risk of turning down a potential job and not getting what i'm holding out for?

I've got a friend down there and have asked if I could stay. But its still a £50 train ticket minimum.

Earliest train of the day gets in an two hours after they want to start. There is apparantly a sleeper train option, but that looks more expensive than a normal train and a hotel.

Its not an easy decision. The job from yesterday i'd much rather have

I still think the trouble with our rail network started with nationalisation in 1947 and the modernisation plan in 1955 (I think?). Not sure re-nationalisation will fix it. Then again not sure it could be much worse.

Mr Mystery
07-11-2013, 03:58 AM
Looking at the arguments presented, I do get the case for keeping as is, but introducing competition.

Sadly, that isn't a realistic answer from my perspective. I'm on the Hastings-London line. Which is a single path (one going each way). Not entirely sure how you introduce competition on that line. My fear is that such restrictive, but busy lines would simply become a cash cow....

Nationalisation is the only answer. Public Transport...clue is in the name as far as I'm concerned.

Wolfshade
07-11-2013, 04:08 AM
I believe coach travel is only 3rd...

The purpose of the railways is what you need to consider, and based on this view depends how they should be run.

If you think that railways should be self-funding then these can be run by either private or public. Unfortunately, the best routes are going to be the inter-urban routes (with a heavy sway from X to London) and then the return journey. The small branch lines are not self funding so are either run at a loss or are closed a la Beeching.

If you think that railways should be a national network then this must be run publically. The inter-urban trains will make profit but the branch lines will not. So if this was run by a private firm they would require a subsidy to continue to run a non-profitable route. For those living at the end of branch lines these are often very important community life lines (or they were) and such places are often not served (well) by busses and it is a consequence that quite often these rural communities are less affluent and so less likely to be able to have private cars to do such journeys.

From a wholelistic view point I would love to have a proper full intergrated national transport strategy, one that includes all modes of public transport. Where there are useful connectors that arrive at useful times and not just on the same provider. To provide a service to the community, rather than the optimal staging to make the most profit.

There is also a problem with the railways that they are currently far too expensive so frieght is transported on the road network, which causes issues themselves with increased degerdation to the road surfaces and bottle necks where two slow lorries try and overtake each other.

some of the sales are all month, and some are eight hour flash sales. Bioshock Infinite is good, worth playing, but not amazing. I don't understand the obsession with the Bioshock games personally. People are in complete denial about SoB in particular for some reason. The parallels between SoB and DE are striking. They both arrived later than people expected, both times Jes Goodwin talked about working on the plastics years before they were released but in spite of this for both races were predicted to be squatted. I'm amused by the insistence that the bitz companies will bury GW... Even though its not in their own interests.

Besides, whilst some do offer a quality product, CH isn't one of them. Before many people disappeared up CH's arse, they were noted for ropey sculpts, and poor castings.....

And exactly what bitz have been produced 3rd party for Sisters?

eldargal

The third part industry relies on GW, even companies like Mantic and Raging Heroes which aren't making bits are smart enough to make sure their models work alongside GWs models.

And let's not forget that according to some, GW is all but dead, floating on a mountain of debt amidst plummeting sales.....

Whereas their Annual Report showed a 10% increase in takings in the US, despite them apparently having 'lost' that market completely.....

Oh but that's all down to the price rises isn't it! Even though they're never across the board. Or the inconvenient truth (well, inconvenient for some) that many units wind up with a lower price tag when switched to plastic. Like Wraithguard. Which if memory serves, were previously £12 a model...

It is. I've also started watching the 'merikan series Elementary with contemporary Holmes in New York with female Watson, enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I really wish someone would make a new Victorian version though, the old 80s series is excellent and not too terribly dated but I think it could be done even more superbly today.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23234033 :D

There is an argument that house prices/ rentings are already over inflated. In reality the plan is to restrict the funds which should put the squeeze on the right aspects of their lifestyle choice and more into work. Unfortunately, I am not convinced that this will work. We have already seen what happens when tennats are paid gifted their housing costs and are left to pay it themselves, with huge increase in arrears as that money is spent on other things instead of going to landlords.

What the media will show is one of two extreme ends, the "deserving poor" who are working and are hit by this or the "undeserving poor" who are complaining that their 15 bedroom 13 kids are going to be unfairly disadvantaged.

I think the reality is somewhere in the middle. But people still continue to believe that the state should pay for their children, even if they themselves cannot afford it. It is like the woman at work who complains about the "bedroom tax" and has just come from a 14 day break at a 5 star hotel...

What we need are teh good old days where we locked people up for being poor, that taught them a lesson...:o

Psychosplodge
07-15-2013, 04:01 AM

What bedroom tax? you mean the lessoning of their subsidy? They should surely question why their local council hasn't reassessed the size of their houses like some councils apparently did.

Wolfshade
07-15-2013, 04:05 AM
Yeah the spare room subsidy to bring private sector and public sector housing to equality. I used the "" as that is what she calls it, I ask her where they deduct that from her wage, I've not had an answer yet...

She doesn't want to down-size and the council can't make her, but that doesn't stop her, nor does the fact that she must be on a similiar wage to me and if I can be in my own home than she certainly should.

But there is a problem that there is a lack of 1/2 bedroom properties for people to downsize to.

Psychosplodge
07-15-2013, 04:10 AM
Why's it affecting her at all then? Do you get any help towards your housing costs?

That's why, I think it was, Leeds that reassessed their housing stock and declared many to be smaller with box rooms that don't count as a bedroom. Whereas the local council would rather people suffer any hardship and score points of the government.

Because she is in a council house. I don't know why either, she seems to be in full time employment for the last 20 years so who knows.

Ah I see re-assess the house rather than her, gotcha!

(Well it is a Lab local government ;) )

My only grievenace is that you can't not have a city build something. I've only played the first 4 tutorials so far...

Later on you can get them to build gold or research but you have to get to that level first. If in doubt build a wonder :) Pyramid is one of my faves,

Not a bad gift. The legendary edition?
I put a good few hours on on that this weekend. Only upto level 39. I wouldn't suggest playing it on anything less than expert.

 can you not? That sounds odd. It's been a while since I actually played it. But playing the tutorials? O_o

It has tutorials ?

Nah, one of my mates brought it from game electroically and the code didn't come through within 10 minutes so brought it from steam. Ironically, the game version is also delivered through steam.

I think all PC versions run through steam don't they?

It does have tutorials.

I haven't played a civ game since 3 came out. So i just wanted to go to speed on things. I worked most of it out myself just filling in the blanks. Got the diplomacy one to do then i'll be going into a real game

I've played one to five.
Four was by far the worse.
Three was ok but I preferred alpha centuari so went back to that.
Two is by far the one I've played most.
Five I haven't dedicated time to like three and two as Total war series exists now.

Never played any Civ games.

Used to have Megalomania on (I think) my SNES. That was fun!

And seriously, any suggestions about the sudden bouts of Whine Flu in the 40k section? Has another forum gone down the swanny or something?
