Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
The Japanese don't care to, the Chinese wouldn't dare to,
Hindus and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to one,
But Englishmen detest a siesta,
In the Philippines there are lovely screens,
to protect you from the glare,
In the Malay states there are hats like plates,
which the Britishers won't wear,
At twelve noon the natives swoon, and
no further work is done -

Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
The Japanese don't care to, the Chinese wouldn't dare to,
Hindus and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to one,
But Englishmen detest a siesta,
In the Philippines there are lovely screens,
to protect you from the glare,
In the Malay states there are hats like plates,
which the Britishers won't wear,
At twelve noon the natives swoon, and
no further work is done -
But Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.

Read this in the news and all I can say is " it's about bloody time" they have been doing this in America with some success and now rolling it out here too. Sure how its implemented is key, but this kind of thing may even help keep some of the more unruly kids to respect their teachers a bit more and in turn get a better education instead of dicking around in class and ending up with a less than rosy future. ... training four days a week on-the-job in classrooms around England and one day at university.

After two years' training they will count as 'newly qualified teachers' and will have gained an honours degrees in education, specialising either as secondary school subject teachers or as primary teachers.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-22798200

This is a really bad idea. This means that, as opposed to mere mortal Education degree teachers, who need three years full-time to become qualified, they're going to be a qualified teacher after 16 weeks (or maybe less, not sure) of actual education in the theory of teaching :(

And no, I don't believe in on-the-job training for teaching.

No GTPs? or the new equivalents?
On the job training I think is important for those who are less academic. Let us be perfectly honest two physics could teach science with having very little/no knowledge of chemisty or biology or even the sylabus is for ks3/4/gcse what have you.

You have clearly missed the part where it says 'exceptional' individuals. I don't think the gubmint or the troops themselves think they will instantly be able to command respect just by dint of being ex military and shouting a lot, its a shame the teaching unions, instead of contributing to the debate about how to get rid off sub-standard teachers, are closed minded enough to think these people will automatically fail.

 I'm not sure how you think we learn how to teach without on the job training. That's exactly what learning to teach is. Whether you do it through university or GTP, you are in the classroom, teaching the kids, planning lessons, marking work and so forth.

As for the issue of the soldiers getting fast tracked, it is utter nonsense. I fail to see why a soldier has any greater skill at disciplining a child or creating a relationship based on respect than any other sensible adult. Soldiers are used to working with other adults and expecting instant respect and obedience, that simply doesn't happen with children. The way you deal with them is completely different to the way you deal with adults, and that takes time to learn, regardless of what previous experience you may have.

I'd also have serious concerns about the motivation of soldiers wanting to switch to teaching. If they really wanted to be teachers, they would have become teachers in the first place and not bothered with the army. Anyone viewing this as simple job switch is going to be in for a very rude awakening and will not last long.

If the government wants to offer the military extra incentives to train as teachers, then fine, but a fast tracked training process, especially for people who will mostly be lacking the specialist subject knowledge required to teach at secondary level, is laughable. As is the government's idea that this will have any significant impact on raising educational standards or addressing the problems of the 'breakdown of society'. Anyway, I suspect this will be largely moot debate, I doubt there will be any significant take up and the next government will abandon it as a waste of money.

Chris*ta
06-09-2013, 08:45 AM
I'm not trying to say that on the job training isn't important to learning teaching. What I'm saying is that I don't see why ex-soldiers should be excepted from learning the theory that is required of other potential teachers. And I don't believe that being a soldier (even one who trains other soldiers) or an exceptional soldier can replace this theoretical knowledge.

I agree with Wildey that it's largely academic (so to speak ;)) as I doubt there will be many takers. I do worry about the (few) kids who get largely untrained teachers as a result, though.

I agree with most of what you say, but this bit is wrong. it is perfectly reasonable for somebody to plan to have two careers in their lives, especially when the first is the army. plenty of people serve their time and then go and do a different job. a lot of people don't stay in the army for life. I want to be a teacher, but not for another ten years or more, it will be the job I 'retire' to all being well.

How was everyone's weekend?

Mine started a 01:30 when the falt two roads over started to party. The police were uninterested with this, even asking me if there was any other antisocial activity. I was adivsed to inform the council, I told them environmental services worked Monday-Friday 08:00 - 20:00, as it was outside of that time I couldn't use them, I also explained that as I didn't know the address of the complaint that they can't open/investigate a complaint. I suggested that as it was anti-social behaviour and disturbing the peace that it could be something they should investigate.

So 08:00 rolls round and having had no sleep I get up go to shower and I have no hot water, boiler is out of action, so I'm tired and wanting a wash. Boil a kettle for hot water and call teh police to update my log that the complaint is still on-going. New calle handler, I had to convince her that the local was within their jurisdiction and not the next force over. Call boiler people and they have a bloke within an hour. Brother-in-law calls says he is going to be 30 mins early for our 40k game.

Use hot water to make tea, put bacon and sausage on. Then wash, eat bacon, feel good.

Played some 40k BA vs Nids big bugs list.

Stand out moments:
Flyrant vs Death Company Dread, (I was expecting a dead dread before striking back) but they were left with 1 wound/hp left.
5 Man Termies made a massive tarpit taking out 2 squads of termagants, Tervigon, 2 wounds from a Trygon Prime and the last wound from the above Flyrant.
Forgetting to fire with an outflanking baal at a squad of gargoyles that then charged the tanks and glanced to death.

Ended up being tabled, but it was fun.

Meanwhile, boiler repair man turns up within an hour of the call out and fails to fix my boiler, tells me he'll be back monday to fix it.

Spent the rest of the day watching warehouse 13/ eating

Night passes and morning comes, that was the end of day 1

Go to my sisters to baby sit while she goes to watch Bon Jovi, arrive at 15:00

Nephew (7 months) we play with his toy cars, bouncing and sing and walk around, you know "normal" stuff. Takes his bottle as per the norm, then at 17:00 he starts crying, do the checks, Nappy - Clean, Hungry - No, Temperature - Fine, so he wants attention so we bounce and sing some more. He settles down for 30 minutes so I prepare his dinner, in the interm he starts screaming an non-stop wailing doom , he just wants his mother, finally put him to sleep at 19:00.

Watch Voyager till 01:00, sister arrives home, drive home.

Night passes and morning comes, that was the end of day 2

Get into work and get a call from boiler repair man, I'm 20 minutes away, oh I say, I wasn't told you were coming, oh he says, the contact centre fouled up again.
Repair man arrives, replaces part. Boiler is working.
He then does it's annual service and "I've dropped X, have you seen it?" Now part X could be anything flux capacitor, prime mover absoultely anything I have no idea what it sounds looks like. "Hmm, I can't see it in the boiler or the floor, I'll go and get a replacement" so off he drives.

He arrives back and huzzah replaces teh bit he lost, the boiler passes it's inspecition and hot water is available again!

Yay!!
So he replaces

Or just encourage the police to use their ability to seize equipment..
I fear that that might be the quickest and easiest solution, but I don't want to spend that kind of money.

How was everyone's weekend?

Well we got trapped between two lines of police on a side road between west street and and division street while the EDL marched down division street. No problem there the EDL were past in about a minute. What was a problem was the thirty or forty animals under the UAF banner caught in the cordon on the same short side road. Spitting, abusive, throwing things, faces covered. Think it's first time I've been worried to be in the city centre. The poor GF had a slight panic attack. Had to hide in the doorway of an apartment block.
Next time I'll ignore the police statement encouraging people to shop in town as normal ¬_¬

So the UAF protest people's rights to protest that they dislike, doesn't sound very anti-facisim to me.

you have to love the fact that so many more republicans believe these theories than democrats. The aliens one I would like to know what their actual question was. it is listed as a conspiracy theory but obviously there is a big difference between the existence of aliens somewhere in the universe, and aliens coming to earth and probing red necks.

All of these are probably directed at me.
Linking Twitter to Facebook is useful, because I don't have to update 2 sites at any one time. And because I update my Twitter, I add hashtags.
If you have a problem with that, hide my posts, or unfriend me. I really couldn't give a toss either way.
