If certain species of sharks stop moving, they drown.

How awful. Stupid design flaws.

Not really, it was theorised that was the case, but these days its accepted that most sharks have alternate means of moving water over their gills. And even the ones we think don't have been observed stationary and resting in reefs and the like.

Plus Man of Steel was awful!

Your opinion. Which to be fair isn't shared by many.
Mine on the other hand, I thought it was loads better than expected. Ben Affleck I think could be surprisingly good and any improvement on Bales over the top gruff "I'm batman" is welcome in my book.

I liked Man of Steel quite a bit, Faora and Lois Lane were fantastic in particular. But I did start to feel really sorry for New York.

But I agree the pushing back of the release date, changing staff and so forth aren't hopeful. Also they seem to be trying to cram too many characters in. I'm actually hoping the delay is leading up to a reappraisal of how to best proceed, instead of Superman vs Batman perhaps one new film for each of the trinity instead of a big ensemble film this early in the process. Seems like WB are trying to copy the success of Avengers without building up the franchise first.

Mr Mystery

Man of Steel makes no sense, or it suffered horribly in the editing suite.

There was no reason for Zod to be so intent on terraforming Earth. We have a moon which whilst small would be perfectly serviceable as a staging point to rebuild. Is that brought up? Nope. It's not even suggested.

Stupid stupid stupid!

Surely his reason is he's evil? Though agree, the film didn't really work. The best bits were the stuff with jor el and Jonathan Kent, but there was far too little of that and too much nonsensical smashing. And what was the point of the scientist guy (who's name I forget) and perry white. Their presence in the film served no purpose other than to die/nearly die. I'd have liked to see Nolan take more editorial control and reign in Synder's excesses, getting him to focus on what he was doing well. It also missed the whole point of superman. Superman saves people, he doesn't smash everything to piece like he's the hulk. Avengers did the smashy stuff whilst still focusing on the cap saving people. Not once does supes so much as bat an eyelid at the horrific death toll his fight must have wrought.

Mr Mystery
02-02-2014, 05:46 AM
Dude. He commits genocide against his own people....

And why did Zod have it in for Kal El? His dad, fair enough.

And how did Clark know where the crashed Kryptonian ship was?

Whole thing didn't work for me at all. Visually gorgeous yes, and certainly an improvement on Superman Returns, but that's not saying much is it?

Earth = more resources + more space? Plus he probably liked punishing Russel Crow-els' son.

You mean the best bits were the ones with Lois Lane and Faora.:p I wouldn't disagree with your criticism of the film though, it was odd that Superman had such little regard for collateral damage. I mean how many people died in the buildings that collapsed during his fisticuffs with Zod at the end? Hard to believe it would be none and probably hundreds.

As I said I'm hoping WB are reappraising how they are going to approach competing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They need to put more effort into establishing their strong characters (the Trinity) in film before getting ahead of themselves the way they seem to be. Man of Steel would be a solid start if they focus on building more of a base with Batman and Wonder Woman films but it isn't strong enough to lead into an ensemble film or a Batman/Superman bromance.

Clark had the codex thingy and wouldn't give it to Zod, Zod knew it was launched into space with him.

Clark heard military officers talking about an anomalous object being investigated up Norf and went to check it out, not so much a plot hole as mighty convenient.

Mr Mystery
02-02-2014, 06:57 AM
Ah fair enough on the ship thing.

There are enjoyable elements to the film, but as a whole it's really clunky, as if they filmed the best bits of various scripts which didn't share a common plot line.

Cap'nSmurfs
02-02-2014, 07:06 AM
I thought Lois Lane was written really badly. Most of her lines are horrible clunkers, and instead of being a top end investigative reporter, she comes across as an idiot. I felt they'd let the character down.

Man of Steel was generally a horrible mess. Great design, though.

Wildeybeast
02-02-2014, 09:50 AM
Yeah, I didn't like Lois either. Amy Adams is a great actress, but not sure she works for me as Lois. And as you say, she was badly written and had very little depth to her. I don't understand the choice of Zod as the baddy either. Lex is a better baddy and would have avoided the hour long building smashing sequence. EG is correct to say that chucking in the other big two without them having their own franchises (assuming batfleck has no connection to the Nolan batman) is madness. With 2 batman film franchises, 2 and bit supermen, the terrible green latern film and smallville and arrow, it basically seems like DC are willing to sell licenses to pretty much anyone without any sort of choesive overview. Marvel seem to have a much tighter (and better) control over their characters.

Mr Mystery
02-02-2014, 01:02 PM
On the Codex thing, still bugs me that Zod was hellbent on terraforming earth.

He found the ancient machine somewhere, which presumably would have been suitable for the process.

But no, it's let is destroy the Earth, your home, or I'll kill you.....

Makes no sense to me!

It wasn't that the film wasn't good, it looked really good, the acting was good, the comic humour made me laugh in several places. My issue was that the main character I didn't care about, it wasn't that I wanted to be caught or get away with it, I just couldn't give two hoots about it.

one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. not safe for work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STHpMUYeznQ

for those unable to view it, it is an ad against skipping school. In it a bunch of young people go to a beach for a happy day in the sun, and then they all blow up. literally explode. blood and bits everywhere. because they decided to play on a beach that was in fact a test area for explosives. because that is what happens when you miss a day of school, you get blown up by a landmine. I hope it is fake, because it will not convince anyone at all to stay in school, and is so ridiculous it annoyed me.

Mr Mystery
02-03-2014, 06:46 AM
Salt at the ready, but Ben Affleck is apparently no longer Batman (http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/rumour-ben-affleck-sacked-batman-175100268.html).

Says a single source, who is normally thought reliable.

Odd names for the replacement though. Josh Brolin - K that's possible. But Keaton to reprise Batman? Not so sure.

It might seem isolated, but we know that the film has been delayed, and one imagines the sacking of a lead actor could well cause a delay of that scale?

Obese people in Stoke-on-Trent will be sent text messages to encourage them to lose weight, the city council has said.

About 70,000 adults in the city are classed as obese according to the council, with the local NHS spending £50m a year on weight-related illness.

"Motivational" texts include: "Use the stairs more", "Eat fruit and veg" and "Keep a check on snacks and drinks".

The 10-week project will cost £10,000 and will be available to 500 people who sign up with the council.

Cabinet member for health Adrian Knapper said: "On average it costs the same amount [£10,000] to perform just one intervention operation to help people manage their weight.

"Our programme means people who already want to lose weight and have signed up with us to get support will receive a cheap and effective nudge to help keep them motivated."

I took a massive chunk out of end of thumb yesterday. Bloody thumbprints on kit is apparently unprofessional.
I never thought to cure it with cake :(

I was disappointed in film tonks, she didn't live upto my expectations from book tonks, but considering how much they cut at least she got in.

Bit strong dude!

It's how Brody describes affleck in mallrats. I assume affleck is fine with that description since he is in the film. He's actually turned into a pretty good actor/director now.

I thought I would bung this down here as my BoLs chums frequent this corner of our forum more than the Star Wars section.

Anyway as most of you know I've become a big fan of the X Wing miniatures game and my daughters been playing it too. I've been nurturing her new found love of all things Starwars and the last couple of days she's been off school with a tummy bug. Being self employed I was able to take some time off to look after her and we've watched all 3 of the original movies and we played lots of X Wing too. I had to spend a few hours doing paperwork this morning and whilst I was doing that Imogen started making her own "scratch built" minis.

Here's her Tie Fighter
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab3/joenortonjones/b94dd629f8b8d902b3cdad66e1dfbfa3.jpg
She's also made a y-wing and a falcon.
Not brilliant I grant you, but at the age of 6 I was suitable impressed. What's warmed my heart more is my daughters eagerness to get involved in all of my geeky interests.

Bill Roache found not guilty of historical sex offences against youngsters.

I would be sceptical, except for one of the charges....'You see m'lud, he touched me up in his car'. 'And when was this?' 'I dunno. I don't actually remember it happening. But it did'.....

How did that one even make it to court? And what sort of impact did that have on the Jury's thinking?

Psychosplodge
02-06-2014, 06:50 AM
Two issues.
1)Even if there's some genuine cases, there's every possibility that people jumping on the band wagon wanting compo would cast doubt on a genuine victim.

2)Its that long ago, how do you present anymore evidence than one persons word against anothers?

Mr Mystery
02-06-2014, 06:55 AM
Well indeed.

Sadly, the woman who stated she had 'no memory of it actually happening' has quite possibly caused the rest of the trial to collapse.

Under letter of law, the just outcome was arrived at, regardless of where the doubt stemmed from.

I also expect DLT to be fully acquitted when his trial is over. You've got a handful of accusors, an a great many defence witnesses stating they'd heard nothing of such things at the time.

Worth nothing that false rape claims make up 0.8% of the total and almost never get to court, how this one made it so far really does not reflect well on our justice system especially when the system is so heavily stacked against genuine cases.

The CPS seems to have it's priorities screwed. Not jsut with this regard, but more generally.

It seems make a decision of whether or not it is likely to get a conviction and then goes from there. It also can change what people are being prosecuted for without comeback either from teh victims or the police. In a similiar way to the American "plea bargaining".

Because he was such a public figure the had to go through the system otherwise people would be saying things like "Oh, privelidged because he is an actor".

Though I do agree that it is hard to get independent evidence from all that time ago, especially considering how difficult it is to prove much more recent things occured.

I think they might attract more (like 0.9% lol) accusations yes but they also attract more scrutiny from police and media both. Chances of success are basically non-existent.

It is really bizare though this celebrity culture. On the one hand they are subject to such public scruitiny, oh look at what they wearing? have they put on 0.5lbs?! and on the other hand get away with some terribel things, like Tevez driving illegally *all the time*. That case even got mentioned in PMQs. Or driving at 100mph+ and getting away with it as they have money for a top notch lawyer.

Famous people are at higher risk of bogus claims and outright weirdos making stuff up. It shows in the insurance industry that anyone who works on the TV, Radio or that will need a specialist underwriter because they're a much higher risk (take Jimmy Carr, I'd gladly smash up his car, despite my being otherwise law abiding).

Sexual assault claims do seem quite common!

What other way is there to decide who gets prosecuted? Pushing ahead only with cases where they think there is a good case (i.e. those with reasonable evidence) is the only sensible way to do it. Bear in mind that a case only ever gets to the CPS once the police have gathered enough evidence. As for the victim having a say in the offence they are charged, that is just daft. They are charged with the offence that the CPS knows they can convict on. Take the Philpots. Usually if you kill someone through arson, it is a straight up murder charge as it is reasonable to assume that if you set fire to a building with people in, you can foresee their deaths as a direct result of that arson. However, there was strong evidence to indicate that the Philpots had no intention to deliberately harm their children and indeed intended to get them out of the fire before any serious harm befell them. But they didn't because they are ****tards. Anyway, police charged them with murder, but the CPS realised any decent defence lawyer could clearly prove they had no intention to kill their kids and so they would have got off scot free on a murder charge. So they downgraded the initial police charge to manslaughter and duly got them convicted.

For better justice.....

Link fines to earnings, with a minimum.

For instance, I got fined £50 for dropping a ciggie butt. Bit unpleasant on the pocket at the time, but now not so much. To someone earning ridiculous money, like a pro footballer, it's less than loose change, so barely a punishment at all.

Not suitable for all fines, but better than status quo!

It becomes a two edged sword, knowing the cps wo'n't prosecute, the police don't collect the evidence. You end up with bizare situations such that private cameras are not classed as "independent witnesses". Or people eing charged for crimes, even though they clearly fit the guidelines of greater offense.

They do that in switerzland. So if you speed you get fined a % of your annual sallary. It makes sense, to the very rich 3 points an a £90 fine are nothing, to a normal person it is more so.

It does make sense.

A custodial sentence hits people the same way as a punishment.

Fines just don't!

I do not think an independ scotland is finacially viable, it will have no currency, be outside of teh eu, have no army/navy. The border between scotland and england will need to be manned.

Plus I'd rather have Niggle Farrrrage than Alex Salmond in charge, which in and of itself is worrying.

I just don't see the point, if they want to join the EU they'll have less freedom "independent" than as part of the UK.

Plus Salmond is creepy

They could petition to join but it would take years, all the while they would be trading at a disadvantage to their nearest neighbours. There is a reason that the EU trades within the EU more than anywhere else in the world.

If they have the sterling (irony) then they will have their interest rates and fiscial policies dictated by the bank of england, similiarly with the euro, but they would need to establish their own currency first and try and get to the entry requirements, which is not easy given most the euro countries don't actually meet it.

Agreed and I certainly hope so, it would be disastrous for Scotland. I mean the only it could feasibly happen from an economic perspective is with the aid of massive loans which on top of a fair share of the current debt would put a crippling burden on a small economy right from the start.

It really isn't. It is the same, thing.
Scotland, as a member of the Union, it's people decide if it wants to remain part of the union.
UK, as a member of the European Union, it's people decide if it wants to remain part of the union.

Conservatives are huge fans of small government and decentralisation.

I think that any breakup of the UK will leave both parties worse off for it.

Schools in England and Wales are set to be hit by a teachers' strike on 26 March in a dispute over pay, pensions and conditions, the NUT has said.

In a show of solidatiry and we're-all-in-this-togetherness teachers are holding the country to ransom damaging national productivity and the educational experiance of those that they claim to care about. Apparently, the wages are too low and the pension which is state funded is not generous enough.

I am as you can probably tell not in favour of this, but the last time that they striked, over the same issues, it hardly won them any favours, especially amongst those un-unionised.

I had a rather humbling experience in the gym last night. Whilst signing in there was a young lad at the desk on crutches. He wanted to join the gym but unfortunately all the instructors were busy, he could join but wouldn't be able to use any equipment that evening until they were free. He looked really down so I offered to show him around instead and his Dad said that would be fine. I asked the obvious question, why the crutches thinking it would be a sprained ankle or something like that. Nope the kids got Cerebral Palsy.

I spent an hour with him just doing basic stuff and get this, he ended his session on a treadmill without his crutches. Granted he wasn't running, just sort of walking fast but man the effort he put into those 5 minutes was incredible.

He walked out beaming and the look of pride on his fathers face was priceless. The kids got the heart of a lion and I told him as much. Anyway looks like I have picked up the occasional training partner now :D
