I like to eat as ethically as possible, without going into the hippy dippy silliness of veggie or vegan.

However, I'm now craving Whitebait...dredge in seasoned flour, deep fried and served hot with freshly squeezed lemon juice.

And speaking of "ethical eating," I'm sure our friends in the UK are aware scientists have taste-tested a new form of hamburger. The meat of the burger was grown in a vat from cow stem cells, meaning that nothing was killed in the making of the burger.

Woah! I just had an epiphany! With this synthetic meat, mankind could almost become a self-sustaining, environmentally neutral creature. I mean think about it – all of our biological waste matter could be collected and reconstituted into growth medium for the vat-grown meat. Even the dead could be broken down into amino acids and what not as a resource for the vats, providing the efficiency of cannibalism without the unsavory moral quandary. Naturally there would need to be some input of external organic matter to keep the system going, and also naturally it would only be the power elite who would-be-allowed/could-afford to eat the real food, but hey … that’s progress.

Eating corpse-fed beef instead of corn-fed beef would diminish man’s footprint on the Earth significantly, since there wouldn’t need to be as much real estate wasted on cattle and farms. Mankind’s impact could be further reduced if human habitats were forced to conform to Paulo Soleri’s hive arcology vision. Combine this with a dramatic expansion in nuclear power, and with draconian restrictions of conventional combustion, and mankind’s impact on the planet could almost be rendered negligible. This of course means the planet would then have the capacity to host many hundreds of times more humans than are already here, perhaps even thousands of times more.

With so many people and so few opportunities for employment (assuming the pace at which automation replaces human labor keeps up), mankind will be free to pursue the one thing he has truly excelled at throughout all ages of time … warfare! Unlike in the past, however, there won’t be any fear of starvation or disease, because the honored dead will literally be the source of the victory banquette, and nothing would be left to fester and rot on the battlefield. After several ages of struggle and strife, when mankind finally steps out into the stars, he will be well prepared to spread like the virus he truly is – crushing all opposition, be it from green skins, space fey or post-organic automata.

HOT DAMN!! I’m starting to get excited about this technology now!! :D

"The UK Independence Party has asked one of its senior politicians not to use the phrase "Bongo Bongo Land" again, warning that people abroad might find it "disparaging"."

you don't say...

"Questioned on the BBC News Channel, Mr Bloom, MEP for Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire, said it would be "absurd" and "ridiculous" to label his comments racist.
He said Bongo Bongo Land was "a figment of people's imagination. It's like Ruritania or the Third World".
He added: "It's sad how anybody can be offended by a reference to a country that doesn't exist.""

Bongo Bongo Lands cheif export are tropical fruits (47%), percussion instruments (32%), arms manufacturing (16%).

A benelvant dictator ship has ruled since gaining it's independence from european powers in the late 70s. Most of Bongo Bongo land is given over to agriculture, though a number of tourist resorts are springing up, however without an international airport this market is stymied.

It is unfortunate that he is making a point that a lot of people are not happy with but his terminology leaves a lot to be desired.

For instance aid to india I find distatesful given that they are embarking upon their own multi-billion £ space programme, that they have more millionaires/1,000 population that the uk. They have a serious problem rich-poor divide which apparently they are unwilling to do anything about.

But by referring to these countries as bongo bongo land he then makes the whole thing a farce and loses any credibility (if any) he had prior.

Perhaps he was used BBL so that he did not get drawn up in specific countries or as a general catch all. Eitherway he obviously is not taking his mentats

Farage's impression of being a "just like you!" regular pint and crisps Bloke is a calculated PR position. He's a politician. Politics is all about image management and presentation. Don't ever imagine that the versions of themselves they present to the public are necessarily anything like they really are as people.

Case in point is Boris Johnson. If you judge him by his deeds, Boris really isn't a very nice man at all, and he certainly isn't anything like as dunderheaded as he makes out.

Advice needed. What's a reasonable amount to spend on wedding presents? My mum seems to think it should vary according to which bits of the wedding you are invited to and suggested £50 if you are invited to the whole shindig. That seems rather a lot to me, so I want to canvass opinion. I have that awful dilemma of not wanting to look like a cheapskate whilst not wanting to spend more money than I have to.

Wolfshade
08-07-2013, 08:24 AM
It depends on various factors:

+ Do you know the bride or the groom or both?
+ How well do you know them?
+ What part(s) of the wedding are you invited to?
+ What is your disposable income?

If you buy them birthday or christmas presents, then consider that figure and maybe double it.

I have two weddings coming up, we don't do birthday presents, I know both couples in both cases, though mainly socialise with the grooms and I'm invited to the evening do in one case and the whole shebang in the other.

It is a drop in the ocean, especially when you consider Dutch analysts have also studied the cost benefits of mass cycling in reducing traffic jams, pollution and road maintenance costs and boosting health. They found that the economy made a 35p profit for every mile travelled by bike instead of by car.

Now we have a long way to go before we can get to that level but British reports suggest that the NHS in particular could see £4 return for every £1 invested through reduced obesity treatements.

Not as much as you might think..... By the last census, around 4% of the UK identified as Muslim, so the EDL can hush about it being '40%' etc.

And amongst the Islamic community, Mohammed, and various spellings thereof (all of which are lumped as Mohammed on these polls, distorting things a bit) is a ridiculously popular boy's name.

Cap'nSmurfs

Having misgivings about immigration doesn't automatically make you a racist. There's a lot of attitudes towards immigration which *are* racist, however, or at least xenophobic. Some of them are obvious (like the EDL) and some are more subtle. Take the concept of "mass immigration". How many people does it take for immigration to be "mass"? What are the numbers, where's the cutoff - and why is the chosen number bad? What effect does it have? What are the numbers of people *emigrating* from the country, in comparison (if I recall, they're quite substantial). Basically: what's the evidence that "mass migration" exists, and what effect does it have? The term is used carelessly by politicians and the mainstream press as a way of demonising and rendering into black and white an issue which is really quite complicated - and also serves to "other" people who are living, feeling human beings.

This isn't to accuse you, or anyone, of anything; just to show that the terms we use and the ways we think about these things are often loaded with meanings we may not intend or understand, which sometimes help people we'd never want to be associated with. I'd argue that the current framing of the immigration debate is full of terms and assumptions which are ammunition for the hard right; the further problem is that the whole discussion is full of misinformation and ideologically dodgy framings all 'round.

Also, Mystery's point above is apposite. One of the absurdities of the current immigration regime is that, from the point of view of the people who've instituted it, it's had perverse outcomes. They like the United States, but it's way harder for someone from the US to enter the country at the moment (even if, as with my wife, we were getting married) than it is for someone from an EU country that the Tory backbenches like much less. The crackdown was a farce, all for appearances: they can't touch EU migration because it's hardwired into membership agreements. So they just ended up hurting a bunch of people from countries which the Tories consider major partners, like the United States and India.

Personally I'd have much more open borders pretty much everywhere, but that's me. ;)

Wolfshade
08-12-2013, 08:16 AM
It is all joined together with the idea that people are on the scrounge.
The rhetoric that people come to the UK to enjoy our benefit system without contributing to it. It is full of hyperbole and woefully inadequate stats.

It is, as you say, very easy for the right wing to bang the drum and point to eastern europeans coming in and "taking our jobs" when in reality the situation might be that the natives refused to work for them. Or point to how "they" come across illegally use our srvices and don't pay tax.

I think that like most stereotypes there is (or was) an element of truth associated with these but as to how accurate that stereotype matches up to the actual situation I wouldn't like to guess but I hope it would be either non-existant or limited to a tiny amount of individuals.

But as we say we don't rightly know.

I do think the loss of control of our European borders is not a good thing.

Mr Mystery
08-12-2013, 08:17 AM
Anecdote is anecdote...but I seem to remember reading somewhere that there are more people emigrating from Britain, than immigrating to Britain.

Anecdote is also not up to date.....

There's also the myth that most immigrant are workshy and here to work benefits. Statistically, this is shown to be utter claptrap, as they are far, far less likely to be on benefits than a native..... Especially one assumes from looking at them, if said native is a member of the EDL.

Wolfshade
08-12-2013, 08:19 AM
I think Mystery you are in danger of stereotyping and pigeon holing yourself.

The EDL has no membership so one could not be a member of the organisation...so said a spokesman for the organisation...

08-12-2013, 08:25 AM
One of the things which made me mad was when one of the cabinet creatures of the night proposed charging migrants to use the NHS. Because, you see, "they don't contribute". Well, speaking from mine and my wife's experience, the only reason she wasn't working for the first six months of her stay here was because *she was not legally able to work because the Border Agency took its sweet time issuing our documents". As soon as she's been able to work, she has been. And, guess what? Paying taxes.

It's all just about turning people against each other, rather than being able to focus our anger on the people who are actually doing us harm.

[old rant] My wife went to Uni straight after school, graduated with a degree in her chosen field and where she wanted to work, but owing to a change of personal stance she decided to re-train and become a maths teacher (there were government incentives to do this) where she did a conversion course and completed her first year of training then because of the pressures of the paper work and through ill health had to drop out, she then tried to work part time but because of her poor mental health was unable to do so. She then investigated the possibility of getting some sort of financial support from the governemnt as she was too ill to work (signed off by GP, backed by Neurologist and Pyschatrist) but was told that because she hadn't paid enough NI contributions she was eligable for nothing. Meanwhile, my neighbour's daughter at the age of 16 had a child was given full income support and a nice two bed flat, despite the fact that she had also made no contributions and was under age to be engaging in sex anyway [/old rant]

Anecdote is anecdote...but I seem to remember reading somewhere that there are more people emigrating from Britain, than immigrating to Britain.

yeah, the Daily Fascist and the EDL neglect to mention for example that well over half of all polish immigrants for example returned home.

Cite your sources, given that official statistics are unreliable.

OK a weeks quick summary...

What about the Times, Telegraph, Observer & Independent. They seem to be missing from your list. Oh and the Metro. Though that is probably so inane as to be utterly devoid of anything which could be classed as 'opinion'. Or 'reporting' for that matter. TBH, saying it contains news is a stretch.

You can't include sunday rags or we'll be here forever

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is £4.49 on Steam....

You considered Cthulu saves the world?

Psh, never cared for Dr Who.

Brilliant Top Gear episode, felt quite patriot!

To be honest the only way I would watch Dr Who is if they made Bill Bailey the time lord.

Lunch is over.

And thanks to a minority of colleagues insisting on streaming video on their lunch, everyone else faces intermittent interwebs time. The selfish sods.

I hate that I can't watch the podcast at work anymore due to selfish colleagues doing this :D

Dredd, after Dredd has shot him with Kryptonite bullets!

Saw him bothering Anthrax on Sunday...

Should have been PrincessUnicorn, splogy would love that

Princesses are Alicorns

Bongo Bongo Lands cheif export are tropical fruits (47%), percussion instruments (32%), arms manufacturing (16%).

A benelvant dictator ship has ruled since gaining it's independence from european powers in the late 70s. Most of Bongo Bongo land is given over to agriculture, though a number of tourist resorts are springing up, however without an international airport this market is stymied.

You forgot the principle export of Um-Bongo

I was very very pleasantly surprised by captain america and thor. both of them had a great many opportunities to fall on their face. a norse god, and a guy in stars and stripes filled with patriotism. but both were actually handled incredibly well and managed to fit tricky characters superbly snugly into the slightly more realistic world of iron man and co.

Yep both surprisingly better than expected.

BLOODSTOCK RUNDOWN

http://i41.tinypic.com/2yxk5ec.jpg

Weather was good.
Had fun but knackered.

Friday bands
Death Angel Good, but sound issues. I described them to someone as slayeresque, and was told, no slayer are death angelesque...

Dark funeral Loud, watchable but sound issues....again...

Firewind you can see the pattern right?

Accept good, no real issues, but the front man looks like the south park style evil twin of Brian Johnson.

King Diamond can't hit the high notes but ridiculously entertaining. Fans were apparently disappointed, but as someone who didn't know what to expect I enjoyed it.

Saturday Bands

Beholder interesting, pretty standard heavy metal. not bad for first main stage appearance

3 inches of Blood second part of their 2013 european tour, enjoyed immensely, crowd was singing, love deadly sinners

Hell really entertaining, even if the songs weren't necessarily up to much

Kataklysm heavy but unremarkable

Gojira fell asleep. Literally. Late afternoon sat/sun at a festival is my nap time...

Sabaton If I had to pick would be my band of the festival, despite five or ten mins of issues, really made up for it with the rest of the set...

Avantasia what I saw was good, but missed half the set.

Lamb of God Technical issues, is that how you stretch an hour slot to a headline length? Disappointing. Not what I expected, though last couple of times I've seen them they've suffered Gojira's fate... Felt lacklustre but lots of crowd interaction and the lead singer seemed chuffed with crowd response *shrugs*

Sunday

Whitechapel heavy. Thrash. just start getting into a song and it'd finish. Very meh.

Sacred Mother tongue Very old school Metal, with lyrics and clean sounding guitars, not distorted stuff. would watch again.

Fozzy Very OTT in mincing around the stage, and stole Elton John's jacket, but very entertaining

Amorphis unmemorable. can't really remember them.

Exodus very heavy.

Devildriver Feels like he knows he's made it, and isn't giving the same effort as last time I saw them. Still good enough, but just felt less somehow.

Anthrax good set. crowd loved it. entertaining.

Slayer last 30 mins were the best. everything was tight, but the fastest stuff that got the crowd going was then.
The lead singer is an amazingly softly spoken bloke considering his profession.

There are a few potential female candidates being touted for 2016 apparently. Doesn't mean they will get the nomination of course.

Wolfshade
08-13-2013, 03:18 AM
I should note that while I think a Ms or Miss or some other combination of it could be equal to the challenge, I think with conserative americanism the chances of a female president happening would only occur if she were married (and probably to a man)

But then again it wasn't that long ago that it was joked "It's not called the white house becuase of it's paint" (IIRC that was in an House episode)

I just wanted to see the White Power placard, then someone to realsie there mistake

Is Hilary one of them? I know she ran BO close, but I'd heard talk that maybe she was about old for it now(not sure whether that is from a voting perspective or hers).

Here's a story for you.....

Went out with my friend Nat that other week.

She ended up utterly wrecked, and having to be carried back to mine, and put to bed. Never seen her that messed up before, and that girl can drink.

Next morning, she doesn't remember a thing. Not even the creepy blokes that kept buying her drinks...

Net result? I think she got Roofied.

And this weekend?

I think someone tried it again, but got the wrong drink. Was feeling wonky all weekend and into yesterday morning!

Wolfshade

Yet you still see people (men) claim drink spiking is a myth.:( It happened to me once, fortunately my escort stopped anything happening. Last thing I remember is the bartender delivering my drink, then waking up the next morning. I pay more attention to my drink now.

I know we all like a good laugh at Warseer, but credit where it is due we just had a very sensible discussion about homosexuality in the 40k setting. There were a few people who didn't seem to understand that as a non-Abrahamic faith the Ecclesiarchy was certainly not guaranteed to consider homosexuality as anything at all deviant, but after a few people (myself included) brought up examples of homosexuality being nothing untoward in 40k they seem to have dropped it.

Wolfshade
08-13-2013, 09:18 AM
Confusing indeed.

One of the things that we have is that we only see 40k through our eyes, it is a bit like First Contact that woman not being able to understand where captain Baldy-Man was coming from.
