Discuss Transformers! DO IT NOW!
I'll start:
I've been a Transformers fan since I was three or something and grew up watching and re-watching the G1 cartoons and the film. I skipped Beast Wars because I didn't like it but got hooked on the recent Transformers Prime after someone on BoLS recommended it (I forgot who, sorry!). Started getting more interested in the comics after they announced a bunch of new female transformers were being added.
I have a respectable collection of G1 Transformers and between my brothers we have most of the English releases I think. I've only bought a few of the more modern toys, most notably:
http://www.onemillioncomix.com/onemillioncomix/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Generations-metroplex-toy-titan.jpg
I'm hoping they make a Titan class Trypticon.

Me Grimlock, me king.
I feel a Avatar change is needed in respect of the thread ;)
Yep I was a massive fan of Transformers growing up. I think I was about 8 or 9 when they 1st came out and I was hooked immediately. 1st one I got for Christmas was Soundwave. I remember being a little disappointed thinking "what the hell" the the others turn into cars, trucks, guns and planes and this fellas a cassette deck ?
Than bam the realisation that the cassettes transformed as well. Oh yes he became a firm favorite.
Obviously Optimus prime will always be a favorite as well as the proper Jazz which turned into a 911. My Dad was a big Jazz fan too, he had 911 at the time so obviously that helped. Then the Dinobots came along as well as the Constructicons and they were super awesome.
But my absolute favorite transformer is a little truck called Brawn. Compared to the rest he was very very small, but the strongest of them all. So very cool.
Good memories this thread brings back and I can't help feel sorry for the kids today where toy fads come into and out of favour so fast before they can get a real following. 31 years later and Autobots and Decepticons are still battling it out on our screens, in our homes and in our comics. Surely only Starwars rivals that kind of longevity in a brand ?

Star Wars probably, GI Joe and, well, Barbie.

The Protectobots formed Defensor and the Aerialbots formed Superion.:) Oh and the Technobots formed Computron. The Decepticons seemed to have more for some reason. Devastator, Predaking, Bruticus and Abominus.

Threaaad.I was a Beast Wars kid, although I've now picked up a fair few of the teeny-tiny Prime toys - they're well displayed on my flatmate's Dalek cupcake stand, although it's been tempting to get them a Metroplex to hang out on :P Still, that might make the whole affair too tough to transport.

Pfft. Beast Wars didddd kinda start the tradition of having a tight cast of more developed characters, rather than a larger, less explored cast.
And it had a velociraptor who couldn't stop quoting Hamlet! I don't know what else people could possibly want from a show!

God ive got transformers from so many generations I had some G2 stuff, beast wars, beast machines, transformers robot in disguise, transformers armada. I stopped buying after that although still watched the tv shows. Australian Jetfire in cybertron was hilarious. But prime is by far the best show they have made recently and could have been such a long run. The high moon games are great though.

God god, why hasn't there been a miniatures game ?:P I've actually got a (very) rough draft lying around. It was mostly a test of the rules set I'm building, but the idea has potential to be pretty fun. Edit: In terms of variety of possible forces (Minicons to bigguns), all the weird fluff to pull weapon options out of, and the interesting flexibility in each unit having two forms. It seems most suited to either skirmish-level gameplay, or larger battles with squads of drone-y types filling out the army.

So I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone that I am a Transformers fan.
If it is a surprise...then you are no fan at all :)
I was 5 when transformers hit over here...and it was awesome!
It was hands down my favourite toy as a kid...and now. This love has stayed with me for 30 years.
I am a collector of the vintage G1 stuff. G2 and action masters at a push. I don't go in for the new stuff at all I'm afraid. some of the toys are awesome and the masterpiece stuff is epic but I have limited myself to old school only.
My boxed collection is pretty respectable and my carded collection is getting better. I don't really buy loose stuff any more as I have nearly everything I want loose. I am trying to get hold of more of the pre hasbro diaclone stuff.
I don't know if anyone goes to the London comic cons and winter comic-cons but I have had a stall there for the last 8 years or so selling Transformers, Star Wars, Mask, Thundercats etc. I have just bought a wodge of Teenage Mutant Hero/Ninja turtles to put up for sale at this years event :)
I'm really looking forward to the new Michael Bay film. I've really enjoyed the first 3. I know they aren't epic, but I really like them.
I love Transformers :D

There is a (terrible, really really terrible) comic where the Dinobots form a combiner called "The Beast Within". It is best left unread, though the TFwiki has a good summary of it (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/The_Beast_Within):
Errors:
This comic was produced.
I've read it. It's true >.<
My love is for TFs who turn into realistic looking things. Love the cassettebots (got most of them save the combiners including the recentish Japanese exclusives) and Alternators / MP line. Though not really actively collecting any more due to space restrictions.
Still have my first transformer, Huffer, on a shelf - not getting rid of him any time soon.

Is that the original Metroplex toy. It looks like it have more sticker detail than the one I had, I had the original.
Looking at the toy it reminded of this video about how to transform jetfire/ skyfire. What was funny about the video he was upset about the third transformation, gerawalk mode, and the fact the toy didn't look like the cartoon.
Yet at the same time he realized the difference in names was do to legal rights, but he couldn't figure out that if the lawsuit happened afterwards that the toy and cartoon character would be the same.
Also transformers are micromasters and other toys thrown in together.
I am a big jetfire/ skyfire fan probaly due to me being a big Robotech fan as well.
I think my favorite character was Shockwaves from the comic. He is the only transformer to beat the dinobots to a stand still, defeated all the deceptions and autobots at once, and defeated Megatron on several occasions. Only time I seen Shockwave soundly defeated, was luck related, was when Metroplex took him out and Shockwave fell to earthen orbit, which he survived.
Best fight ever is dinobots vs Shockwave in I think DreamWorks where Shockwave gave in to anger and defeated the dinobots, before he got buried himself.

The new transformers, I cannot work out though - they are massively hard to transform.Just a heads-up, but the designers have released a statement that current ones are too complicated, and newer stuff's focusing more on "simple, but fun". The stuff for the movie coming up this year's supposed to be focused on that. Then again, sticking to the nostalgia-trip toys makes it fun for father and son!

Ah transformers how I remember you fondly, I used to get the comics during the late 80's very early 90's, here in the UK we got even more stories then the US version did, though many of the extra comics were in B&W....
I remember when I first started watching it as well, it was the only reason I EVER tolorated Timmy Mallet....
Beast Wars is'nt as bad as most poeple think it is, the stories were much tighter then the stories in the original series, mind you G2 had been previously released and that was a steam pile by all accounts, I'm glad I never have seen any of that series... the first issue of the G2 comic was bad enough.....

There is a video of the first of the new simplified transformation bots:

They might just be for the movie tie in ranges and some of the other ranges, not all of them. Speaking of ranges if you haven't been following the Transformers toys avidly you might not be aware of the Masterpiece range. The principle behind it is 'What if G1 toys were made to the highest standard today' so for Starscream you have his G1 toy:

Turned into this:

I've been a fan for years, and just like every other fan there are parts I enjoyed and parts I didn't, but you always get some neat toys so I never saw much point in complaining about it. Animated was the most fun I had with the franchise in ages and I think I bought at least one toy of each character and any variant that was onscreen that got a US release. I almost got multiple Breakdowns for the various arms, but even I have my limits. I had a hard time getting behind Prime since the Autobots were just killing dudes left and right while the Decepticons killed one Autobot in the pilot and later Clancy Brown.
So, if anyone's reading the IDW comic are lady transformers still one of Jhiaxus's projects or did they get another explanation? As much fun as Arcee was at first having every ladybot be a 'girls be crazy' trope seemed grimace inducing.

As much fun as Arcee was at first having every ladybot be a 'girls be crazy' trope seemed grimace inducing.Their backstory hasn't been revealed yet, but according to the writer and the story thus far; a) their gender will be addressed and b) it's being written with a more progressive viewpoint in mind (so, not mad-science).

Windblade at the top, Nautica and Chromia at the bottom. Windblade is getting a figure sometime this year, possibly going to be revealed at some toy fair in a week or so. Chromia is getting a figure along with Arcee in March (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=HAS23637&mode=retail), no pictures available. I like IDW's Transformers comics, what few I have managed to read, but my main critisism for the early ones they put out was that they kept making them as mini series which had to be read in a certain order for you to understand what was going on, which I didn't realise when I borrowed a couple of the Graphic Novels from the Libarary.
I wish I could afford the collected editions that IDW put out a couple of years ago before the fixed series started which had all of the previous releases all in chronological order....
as a side note I recommend their G.I.Joe comics as well.... and that ending of their first volumes....

Oh good, I'm glad the ladybots are the big mystery plot if only because it takes something that was just kind of odd (the sudden appearance of the pronoun 'she' in the transformer vocabulary) and turns it into something rad. I've just been reading the summaries on the transformers wiki and they've just been having a hell of a good time with the Lost Light. Really, the whole shift from stuff on Earth to grand space opera has me thinking of coming back.

That explains a lot. Was wondering why it looked different 20+ years later.
Aletta One been around before Arcee. I think chroma was out with Aletta One. I remember the show had about 5 female auto bots in G1 and Arcee came out in the movie, or possibly the lost episode before the movie, the one with Metroplex first appearance.
I don't recall if the Marvel transformers had any female transformers in it. Although I thought Circuit Breaker could had made it to the regular Marvel Universe.

Elita-1, Chromia, Firestar and Moonracer appeared in one episode together (Elita-1 having a small appearance a bit later when the Aerialbots go back in time), but Arcee didn't appear until after the movie when the cartoon timeline jumped to the far future of 2007 (the Rodimus era). Marvel had Arcee, though given she was written by Furman it was yeah...
Curcuit breaker always reminded me of David Bowie's appearance at the end of Ghostbusters.

It's called Transformers: Regeneration One, it picks up after the original Marvel comic ended, they did the same for GI Joe as well....
Of course us British readers got more transformers stories then the Yanks did, as the comic was weekly in the UK, while monthly in the States, though they were in B&W they are well worth a read.. some very good comic and novel authors cut their teeth on it, including a certain Gaunts Ghost writer :)

I liked the first film, Revenge of the Fallen was ****ing awful (Bay putting in ladybots due to fan demand then killing them off just to upset the fans, IDW sensible retconned that in the comics) and I forget if I've seen the third one or not. I may or may not see Age of Extinction.

I like them because they were big, overblown, and completely silly. Just how I remember my childhood!
Don't recall Arcee getting jobbed though? Should probably pay more attention.
For my money, Dark of the Moon is an improvement on the second film.

Well you only see two of the ladybots get offed but after Bay confirmed all three died, then the comics retconned it so only one died 'cos people were really cranky about it.

If had just been robots beating the tar out of each other, it would've been much better, imo. I can overlook some of the dubious design choices (Shia LeBouf for one, Starscream's extremely awkward robot-mode for another), but Revenge of the Fallen completely failed for me when they took the Linkin Park-penned theme song that they'd been playing on the radio for a month to hype up the movie and then the only time they actually played it in the film was . . . driving up to Angry Government Guy's apartment. (Extra bonus "f*** you" to Marcus Theaters, whose cheap audio equipment made it so that all I could hear was pain in that bit)

Revenge of the Fallen confirmed movie Optimus has a thing for faces, which was pretty disturbing. Also, the special remix of the Touch they did for the movie wasn't used during the resurrection scene, which was the movie's greatest sin. I thought Dark of the Moon was a pretty good apology, what with having a plot that went from point A to point B with some crazy building shenanigans. I'm a big G1 fan and have started getting back into the graphic novels.
Started a G1 collection last year and have been growing it slowly. Have to admit, I couldn't give 2 hoots about boxed or unboxed. If I get them, they will be unboxed, they're designed to be handled and played with, same as miniatures.

The increased emphasis on female Transformers and Beast Wars/Machines characters does have me hoping Botanica will show up before long :3

03-15-2014, 09:38 PM
They've been really good at bringing crazy concepts back into the series and it not feeling forced, so while part of me is all 'Botanica wouldn't fit' a lot of me is all 'I want to see how they'd do it.'
If you liked the small team of good guys who are not warriors dealing with competent Megatron and a ton of G1 elements part of Beast Wars I recommend Transformers Animated. Also, Megatron says "Decepticons, transform and rise up." He's the best Megatron. It's also impossible to summarize the series finale without sounding like you're describing a weird dream. I loved it.
Prime has a fantastic voice cast, no fooling, listening to them interact was my favorite part of the show. But, the Decepticons are kind of incompetent and the Autobots are straight bloodthirsty.
Rev. Tiberius Jackhammer
03-15-2014, 10:19 PM
But, the Decepticons are kind of incompetent and the Autobots are straight bloodthirsty.Yeah, that was the one thing I found odd in Prime. Originally the developers were planning on the Vehicons being mindless/sparkless clones, which would've made their disposability a bit less jarring, but then they decided they were just regular dudes? Eh. I feel like if the Autobots also had mooks it would've been a better show (maybe make use of all the Bumblebee redecos in the background). Not that I demand more death, just that I feel a threatening villain should have a killcount on par with/superior to the heroes :P

I don't mind that really, anything that tells boys it's ok to play with girl characters and generally not treat women like an alien species to be viewed with hostility is a good thing. Though I did think the pairing up of bots and humans in Prime was a bit odd, a bit more mixing and bonding between them all would have been nice.

Judging by the writer, I don't think she's got the crazies. A shocked expression with Starscream reflected in her eyes probably means Starscream's done something dickish/selfish, and she's unpleasantly surprised.
Edit: "Windblade has a very clear character in my mind: hopeful, determined, empathetic, a little naive and in way over her head. If she was human she'd be the girl that puts on fancy eye shadow for a date and then keep forgetting she has it on and touching her eyes." - Mairghread Scott

The answer was a long the lines of they were just robots before that.
They weren't though, they have used male pronouns, male voice actors and have had what can only be described as facial hair and bodies that are much more masculine than they are androgynous since the beginning. The first female Transformers were introduced in 198506 after all. The only difference is now we have hopes they will stop being treated like some kind of oddity that has to be justified while male Transformers are accepted as the default.
Because not everyone has the same opinion?

Tailgate has been genderswapped. This is actually really important as it is I think only the third time a Transformer has been gender swapped (the other being Drag Strip and Slipstream). It is also the first time to my knowledge a female Transformer has been given a masculine type body thugh Strike might qualify too. Either way it is important especially since it is being speculated she changes her gender identity after meeting Nautica.

I'd read that as them using the innocent/naive aspects of the stock character, rather than implying that Tailgate now identifies as female (which seemed positive from the angle of "If Transformers really are genderless, then they'd be just as easily described with feminine terms as masculine").

It hasn't to my knowledge, which is why I use the word apparently.:) But ingenue is word with very, very strong feminine connotations it would be an extremely odd choice of word to use for a male character. It would have made more sense to just use 'innocent'. I think the notion that Transformers are genderless has to be discarded now in light of Windblade, even if gender does seem to be established as a purely cultural thing (as it is in humans really we just have biological sexes associated with it to complicate things).

Coo', was wondering if I missed a tweet or something. The more balanced the cast the better, and I'd like to see some positive gender identity stuff to balance out Arcee's origin. While I wonder if Tailgate/ingenue would be the best choice for either of those things, the IDW teams currently in action seem to be quite competent with these topics.
And wow, the go-bots are weirdly hardcore.

So, Free Comic Book Day is here and a new Transformers Vs. GI Joe is an offering. I have conflicting feelings about it. It's got the old art style from the first few books, but does some clever stuff with the style and it might have a neat story. I don't think it's going to be dropping weaponized fungal spores from Cobra La into Unicron's brain but it's pretty early.

Windblade 2 is out today. It's pretty damn rad and I'd like to take a moment to point out Chromia is just amazing. Physically intimidating but clearly feminine is a hella hard thing to pull off and they're making it look hella easy. I used to love transformers as a kid. But I'll be damned if I can remember much about the series/storyline etc. I had a lot of toys:
Optimus Prime, Jetfire, Dinobots (except the Pterodactyl), Jazz, and then a few from the brilliant (if slightly dated) Movie: Galvatron, the train, hotrod, the green helicopter thing, a transormers "base" thing, and various others.
And just to upset everyone in the thread... I absolutely hate, hate, hate the new Transformer films (y'know with le beef and that god-awful director). I saw the first one at the cinema and wept...!

It is more common to complain about the Bay films and then pay to go see the new one. And, regardless of our feelings towards them, the toys sell like crazy. I just wish kids didn't think Optimus Prime was a face stealing murder machine that left a city to die under Decepticon rule just to teach the squishies a lesson.

So, anyone and everyone, suggest a name/rank/faction/personality/colorscheme, and I'll mush the replies together into the The Oubliette's first fan-built-bot!

In a disappointing contrast to the excellent (and more widely distributed) Windblade, Botcon's comic/art was less than awesome with the female 'bots. The ur-example is probably the "cast photo" of the 'cons, featuring the sadistic merc Flamewar trying to weaponize the "boobs&butt" pose.

At first, I was pretty lukewarm about the literal "men are from mars, women are from venus" approach IDW was taking to introducing female 'bots to IDW-transformers (not talking about Arcee right now), but I really like how it was used in Windblade. The frequent barbs about being "alien" made a lot of the tensions work well when considering the gendered approach (i.e., these are two women in a male-dominated society), but work just as well from a "they're just robots" approach (i.e. purely in-story perspective, in denial about artwork as a social construct).
Plus, Waspinator was adorable, and there was a cutaway illustration of the first two transformers I owned as a kid :3

I'm pretty okay with the ladies being from another planet, if only because it implies something has gone wrong on Cybertron. There used to be ladies, thus everyone knowing gendered pronouns, but something has happened and it doesn't produce them anymore. I think it's a symptom of a big event sized problem we likely won't learn about until after the whole Alpha Trion thing gets resolved.

A like some of the elements of the design, she would've been wasted as one of the nameless prototype 'bots under Galvatron's control. Hope they work her in to future transformers stuff. I don't think it was the intention, but it'd be kinda cool if her turret/tail could alternate between the two modes seen - shoulder-mounted turret for aiming/recoil control, prehensile tail for slashing. Technobots were in the same generation as the Protectobots, weren't they?
But Devastator and the Constructicons were the original combiners. Unlike the ones who came later, they had specific spots for all 6 and you couldn't mix and match them. I only managed to get my hands on Bonecrusher, the bulldozer during my years of collection.

It'd be pretty cool if they had the four limb-bots be interchangeable, and released Hook and Longhaul as a pair of deluxes that can combine into a voyager-sized combiner torso. They'd still be unusual/unique, but would fit into the combiner system.

It might go up a lot if Hasbro stop producing it, it seems like it has been very popular. I'd buy it sooner rather than later if you want one, having to pay scalper prices for it would be a pain. I'm tempted to buy a second one on the off chance one of the 3rd party companies produced a more Sarah Stone artwork style head, and perhaps paint her up full miniatures style to make her extra pretty.

Got my Windblade last week, so happy with her. Some minor issues but she looks beautiful and her paint applications are great and she oozes character, Hasbro really did her justice.
Edit: Forgot I already posted this lol.

Basically the misogynist fanboys in the fandom have declared that being a jet etc. is a 'mary sue' trait that is a huge issue and somehow damages Windblades integrity as a character, while ignoring the fact that jets have always been one of the most common altmodes. It's just another stupid thing they use to try and attack Windblade without just yelling 'I'm sexist'.

Ah fair enough.
And 'Mary Sue'? I know I've asked this before, but it hasn't stuck!

Calling a female character a 'mary sue' basically implies that it is too good to be true. Good at everything and with a narrative importance out of proportion to the actual quality of the character. It is really just a way of de-legitimising female characters by attaching all these negative connotations to them.
So, there’s this girl. She’s tragically orphaned and richer than anyone on the planet. Every guy she meets falls in love with her, but in between torrid romances she rejects them all because she dedicated to what is Pure and Good. She has genius level intellect, Olympic-athelete level athletic ability and incredible good looks. She is consumed by terrible angst, but this only makes guys want her more. She has no superhuman abilities, yet she is more competent than her superhuman friends and defeats superhumans with ease. She has unshakably loyal friends and allies, despite the fact she treats them pretty badly. They fear and respect her, and defer to her orders. Everyone is obsessed with her, even her enemies are attracted to her. She can plan ahead for anything and she’s generally right with any conclusion she makes. People who defy her are inevitably wrong.
God, what a Mary Sue.
I just described Batman.
Wish fulfillment characters have been around since the beginning of time. The good guys tend to win, get the girl and have everything fall into place for them. It’s only when women started doing it that it became a problem.
TV Tropes on the origin of Mary Sue:
The prototypical Mary Sue is an original female character in a fanfic who obviously serves as an idealized version of the author mainly for the purpose of Wish Fulfillment.
Notice the strange emphasis on female here. TV Tropes goes on to say that is took a long time for the male counterpart “Marty Stu” to be used. “Most fanfic writers are girls” is given as the reason. So when women dominate a genre, that means people are on close watch, ready to scorn any wish fulfillment they may engage in. This term could only originate if the default was female.
Rest of the essay (http://ladyloveandjustice.tumblr.com/post/13913540194/mary-sue-what-are-you-or-why-the-concept-of-sue-is).
Windblade was labelled as a mary sue by fans before we knew anything of her character at all, like literally all we knew was what she looked like and people were labeling her a mary sue.

OIC.
How childish of them. And I mean I know we're talking about a cartoon and toys, so it's all inherently quite childish - but being childish about something already childish - that's like tosspot cubed in terms of being a goon.

Hrgm. To be honest this is the first time I have seen Mary Sue be used as strictly female. I've always seen it used as a gender neutral term. But I guess different parts of the world (and internet) that I'm familiar with to have their own view and/or customs.
As Mystery says; "How childish", yeah, sums up my own thought pretty spot on.
And, like Eldar says, a character being a mary sue doesn't make or mean that that character is necessarily uninteresting or bad and doesn't mean that the story/ies told abouth hir can't be interesting.
(For instance Morpheus from Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics is sometimes pointed out as an example of a Mary Sue-character, and that is a great tale.)

So how did they want Windblade presented? Demure and in a bikini and that? All feak and weeble so they could complain she's not a good warrior etc and should get back to baking stuff?

Strongarm is cool. Prime, not so much.
Call me an old Duffer, but there's really only one Prime, and that's the original, innit.
