Non-spoiler review:
My copy of Andy Chambers The Masque of Vyle arrived yesterday. I decided to read half of it before bed. I read all of it. It is a really excellent book with a lot more substance than in its slim hardback form would indicate. Mr chambers tells a tightly packed, gripping story in this book, centred around a Harlequin troupe and their Solitaire, Motley. The same Motley who appears in Mr Chambers Dark Eldar Path series, for those who've read them. That's him in the cover, looking fly.
The story is basically a (mass) murder mystery as the troupe of Harlequins & Motley try to discover who amongst three likely possibilities was responsible for the destruction of a (very) minor hitherto unknown Craftworld. The pace moves along snappily without seeming rushed and it gives great (if not profound) insights into both the Harlequins and Dark Eldar. It isn't exactly action-packed but what action there is is extremely well written and entirely befitting of the Harlequins.

Four and a half Harlequins Kisses out of Five.

Spoilers (not many really):
At the start of the book there is an skirmish between a few of the Troupe and some corrupted wraith constructs, the harlequins are so fantastic they manage to improvisation-ally choreograph their battles in character.
The Shadowseer uses her hallucinogenic grenade launcher (creidann) to enhance their performances as well as in battle. Not a major spoiler but nifty.
This book answers the question every Dark Eldar player desperately asks; 'From whence does Commoragh get its protein'.:p
Solitaires eat souls.

I picked my copy up this morning along with Path of Incubi

I kinda want to keep it as a book for my holiday in 3 weeks, but might read this one before hand.

I have Path of the Incubi also, have a novel to read before it though. Incidentally it says the third book in the series is Path of the Archon, did we know that already? I forget.

I toyed with getting this purely because of the cover art. I just love the fact that the Harlequin is only wearing a half face mask :)

Do I need to read the other 'Path of' books to relate to this, or is it just stand alone?

It's stand alone.:) Motley is the only character in common with the books and there is no reference to the other novels. Of course you should read the other novels anyway, 'cos they are great.:p

I think we knew about Path of the Archon ages ago and forgot...

Chambers' Dark Eldar books are some of my favourite things Black Library has done. The real joy of working with the various Eldar branches seems to be that you get to write wildly different sorts of story to the regular 40k focus on the Imperium and its sundry Massive Battles: Path of the Renegade was an honest-to-goodness dark urban fantasy/mystery romp through a nightmare fairytale kingdom.

Motley is a lovely character. I'll have to pick this one up, if only to encourage them that this sort of thing is totally what I'd like to see more of.

Have to admit the cover slightly scares me.

The book borrows a lot from Edgar Allen Poe's Masque of the Red Death, it's a nice tribute to it in a lot of ways.

I've ordered them both but sadly they haven't arrived yet. You say Motley is a Solitaire. I don't think either Gav or Andy have actually read up on Solitaires. They rarely speak and if they do it's considered a sign of your horrific doom, and also they aren't part of a troupe, they wander alone. Motley seems more like a Troupe Master or even just a common Harlequin.

I imagine the books are great either way though.

Motley is probably one of the better characters from any recent black library book.

Spoiler I think they may have dispelled too much of the mystery with the soul eating scene at the end of the book Spoiler

It's been a couple weeks so maybe you've already read it yourself, but Motley's relationship to the troupe is much more in line with the codex description than the one in Path of the Outcast. He wanders separate from the troupe, they're suspicious of the influence of Slaanesh on him, and the High Avatar is outright hostile to him. The only uncharacteristic thing is his verbosity.
