Distraction. Cute, fluffy distraction, allowing something poisonous to job you. They then share the feast.

So effective, no witnesses or survivors.

But what if its a dropbear?

Australia actually has quite a few small, cute, fluffy and mostly harmless critters. Here I am defining 'mostly harmless' as 'threat level similar to a lone pet rabbit or house cat', given that as an aussie my definitions may be skewed.

Bilby: About the size of a rabbit, very shy nature, eats insects and roots. Since rabbits are hated by farmers here it's not unusual to see chocolate Easter Bilbies instead of Easter Bunnies.

Numbat: Cute stripy little termite eaters. That only have tiny little stub teeth and aren't strong enough to hurt you. No, they are not poisonous OR venomous.

Ringtail Possum: Only dangerous if you are a rosebush or a fruit tree. Or possibly the only tall object around when your dog is chasing the terrified possum, but you'd get similar scratches if your dog was chasing a cat. (These are NOT the ones that end up in your roof making a racket, those are brushtails.)

Ask not the EldarGal a question, for she will give you three answers, all of which are puns and terrifying to know. Back off man, I'm a feminist. Ia! Ia! Gloppal Snode!

Yep, sugar gliders are aussie too. Which is why it is so baffling that they're apparently popular pets overseas, because those have GOT to be the inbred offspring of the few that survived being smuggled out by wildlife poachers (since they've only become popular in recent years and have been illegal to export for longer).
