What is the basic way of telling what is what? Is base size the key (Large Base=MB, Chariot=M)? Is it whether the mount is based on a real animal (stag, eagle, bear, etc.)? Is it personal taste?

Well if we are talking 8th edition it says so clearly in the bestiary of the rulebook, (haven't had opportunity to see it myself but a friend pointed it out to me after he saw a preview copy) and from what i understand it will say it clearly in all new armybooks
