Its distance, yeah, most phones don't have a built in pedometer.

Yup. All GPS linked.

Also, if you're going too fast, Pokémon don't even appear. Any faster than a high jogging pace, and nowt.

It also doesn't count as distance travelled for egg hatching, the stop starting of my above ground train ride to work usually works out as about 500m. I do see the occasional monster at the stations though!

If you're going at the steady sort of pace you'd do in areas with pedestrians, you're fine. If you're doing the sort of speed where you're keeping up with proper road traffic, it may not.
