You may need to add another colour to mark the player character. It looks good, but it took me way too long to figure out that it wasn't part of the background.

I know, but a lot of those games suffered the same issue of the character blending into the background. I remember one of the earliest in the Oddworld series being unplayable because of it. I recall one of the earlier Mario games putting a solid white outline around the character to visually distinguish them, maybe something like that would work better?
