Yup - especially as you don't actually need to be in base to base to swing.
My next doodle will likely be about how to exchange the placement of units.
Expect it to be even worse than the ones above.

The chokepoint was a bridge over a deep water feature that didn't run the whole length of the board but the dwarves established a second chokepoint with two units of warriors at the only other path past the river, the bridge was especially hard to take because of twenty thunderers off to the side capable of firing at anything approaching the bridge as well as the iron drakes on the bridge

Here we go with more craptastic doodling.
As ever - totally not to scale.
So - the key. Orange are your shooty troops - could be anything at all. Up the front for clear LoS at enemy miscreants in need of an arrow to the eyeball.
Immediately behind (no more than 2")? Unit Black and Unit Blue. As you can see, these two units are deployed two deep (two is the minimum. Could be more, as long as the Ranged Unit can clear them in a single move), with the maximum 1" between each row - the second rank can be as close as you like really.
The idea is that at the movement phase of your choosing, Shooty Unit follows the directions of the crudely drawn arrows - falling back in orderly fashion to a position behind Unit Black and Unit Blue.
That done, it's time for Unit Black and Unit Blue to redress their line - the second rank steps forward, in line with the first rank, presenting a solid wall of fighters, ready to keep the shooty unit safe from harm.
Now of course, with just a 1" gap to play with, not every unit type can successfully pull this off. Ushabti and Leadbelchers can pretty much forget it - they're too wide to squeak through the gap left, and anyone on the old Chaos Warrior sized Square Bases might well struggle - provided of course that like myself, you still stick with base-to-base for measurement (old habits and that!)
Also - it can of course be done with just a single 'shielding' unit - it doesn't have to be two separate ones.
This may be of particular use to forces that have small based ranged units, and larger based (and therefore larger, LoS block sized) units. Wood Elves, with their plethora of Bows and 'actually quite large' Dryads are one that sticks in my mind - because you can get your clear shots off, then pull back when a vengeful foe comes to get you, leaving him to fight your tougher, combat oriented horrors as your bowmen show them a clean pair of heels and redeploy elsewhere.
