Default Tital Legion Painting Blog - Warhound #1

So I figured if I started doing a blog I'd be more consistent with the work I do on my painting. So here goes nothing....With that in mind, I'm going to begin here with a model that a very good friend hooked me up with that has been staring at me from my desk for some time: my beloved Warhound Titan Tim (named by my lovely wife).

Tim has a pretty fun history in his unpainted days. He survived a fall from a 6 foot shelf--which, upon finding him on the floor--resulted in me "screaming like a 10 year old girl"-- to finally getting primed and ready to go where he sits now.

I'm going to start with the legs, which I was able to put some paint on last night. I'll add more pictures as we go, but I've got the single one to start off with:

I primed everything in black, then did a quick airbrush of Boltgun Metal (GW-OOP) over the entire chassis.

Second step was throwing in a Devlan Mud (GW-OOP) wash with the airbrush to give it an introductory dirtying up.

He's going to be either a Legio Astorum (the Warp Runners...I know, so original) or Legio Tempestus (If I can find any of their iconography) Warhound, so I based his armor bits on the legs in Macragge Blue (GW).

I put down the second layer of of base color on the blue sections, using the airbrush to give a highlight of Altdorf Blue (GW). It's a subtle color highlight, but that's what I was looking for.

I also put down another layer of wash on the metal portions, airbrushing some Gryphonne Sepia (OOP GW) which gives it some good wear.

Then I got to work on doing the banner. I had originally intended on sipmly using the print out banners that can be found at BoLS. I wanted to put the College Titanicus logo on the back, and like a moron, I did the second outline in thin sharpie. Guess what? It bled through the banner. So I decided to basically trace the existing images on the print out with paint. I think this ended up being serendipitious because I think it looks just as good as the print out and gives a bit more consistency to the paint job:

Looking at the picture, I'm not sold on the grey highlight on the eclipse, but I swear it looks better from a tabletop distance, which is what I typically shoot for with my painting.I did also weather the banner in some chai tea (at my wife's suggestion) and it ended up looking pretty solid.

Finally, I got one of the lower leg plates painted, with the basic Warhound Titan demarcation with the weird white shape and the College Titanicus logo. My reds look....okay. I had some trouble getting the blending to look great, so that's one piece I need to work on.

Next up will be the base and perhaps the titan head. I still have a fair amount of sanding to do on the body, so that'll happen eventually as well!

Cheers!

Just a small update today. Got some work done on the base. It's mostly done. Here's how it started:

1-29-2013 9-39-13 AM by wittdooley, on Flickr

You'll notice he has an unprimed dead Vostroyan and a bit too much blood where he died on the base.

And the back, initially:

Untitled by wittdooley, on Flickr

The stylized "T' is the College Titanicus logo (I guess) which, in retrospect I probably shoudn't have put on the back of the banner, as when you view from the rear it sorta looks like my titan has a hangdown. Not quite Carasco-esque, but it's there. My wife's comment: "At least it's long."

I was also encouraged by some friends that the snow on the base was a bit too sparse, so I added some more:

You'll notice I also toned down the gore on my Vostroyan. Just need to paint him up and find 3 more of them to put on the removable bases you see on the base itself.

Looking good, Witt

The white shape is the Warhound infantry identification badge, so if the ground pounders can only see a Titan's ankle they know what class it is (or if the leg shield is all that survives the explosion!).
If you game with this guy I suggest adding kill markings to the banner over time.

Thanks! It's been fun so far. I was scared to paint it for a while.

I've seen weapon banners as well, so I was considering doing that. Do you happen to know of any reference for how they mark kills (ie, different symbols for eldar, ork, etc?)

Also, thanks for the 411 on the marking and what it's for. I had no idea! I'll be honest with you though: I'd love for GW or FW to do a Legio Titanicus history or Indext Astartes type book. There are a ton of different Titan legions on the wikis, but so few have any photos, logos, color markings, etc. Originally I wanted to do Legio Tempestus from the Abnett book, but I couldn't find a single example of the logo.

C'est la vie.

Next update may come tonight or tomorrow, depending on how much sanding I can get done tonight (and how much CoD I play )

I do indeed, though my scanners out of action at the moment I've got some pics I'm uploading now.

Actual information on the Legions is almost non-existant, sadly. There's a bit from Adeptus Titanicus and Codex Titanicus (looooong OOP) and a few scraps from Epic, but most of it is just the odd mention here and there like in Titanicus, sadly. On the plus side it means you're free to get creative!

Gotthammer do you have complete large scans of those War Griffons pages? I've managed to find just a few examples on the net and found one of my own originals of the Warhound page but not the Warlord. Would love to see these in full, please!
