I've read Legion, Deliverance Lost and the first Cain omnibus so far in 40k. Cain's books are the only I'd recommend (though Legion's nice if you don't mind feeling like there were 100 pages missing). Sandy Mitchell makes 40k seem like someplace people live with small asides like referencing popular entertainment or how Cain has had to birth some babies. Also, there's porn in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium and until that shows up in a Space Marine novel I just don't see the point.
