That's part of why I don't actually like recommending people watch "anime" as it is a very large umbrella term, like saying you like "live action TV" can mean a whole lot from Walking Dead to Brooklyn 99. I prefer to just rec certain series based on them being good, not just because they're anime, as there is loads and loads of crap out there.
Yup, part of that misconception of anime as a genre rather than a medium. Which I had for ages too.
always annoys me when people say 'I don't like anime' it is like saying 'I don't like music'.

"Now I will show you the true power of the Nishizumi school!"
lol
Sigh your missing out on classics then, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Hellsing, Steamboy, Slayers, anything by Studio Ghibli, Legend was the Hentai (anime porn) which went mainstream, not very good either to be quite honest....

Yeah I agree, it's too big and broad a term, thats also why I recommend series and not the genre as a whole....
You know all this talk about tanks got me thinking about Little Napoleon..... from Tank Police!
And to think Shirow wrote Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed and then went and wrote this as well :D
yeah there was a review of it in the Daily Telegraph of all places, so I thought it must be pretty mainstream. the review went on about how extreme it was but I thought, in the national newspaper, can't be that bad. watched it. pretty tedious really. poor animation, bad voicing, bad plot.
Anything by Studio Ghibli is fine by us. The Cat returns ? I think it's called is our favorite. I too wrote off all Animi until I realised it wasn't an actual genre.
Cat Returns is my daughter's favourite, and one of mine. Was watching it with some friends, one of whom is a vet (so she loved it) and then when The Baron appeared she was "it's Westley!" and then when Haru said "I think I've got a bit of a crush on you, Barpn" she said "me too" lol :p
And though it's Studio Ghibli be careful with Grave of the Fireflies. It is an amazing, wonderful film but probably the saddest film I've ever seen.
And if the trailer's music is any indication When Marnie Was There will leave me a sobbing mess:

yes, Grave of the Fireflies is the saddest thing you will ever see. I warned friends of mine they would cry when they watched it, they thought I was exaggerating. oh no...
It's worse when you think of how it's almost entirely a true story.
It's worse when you miss the first few minutes, so you surprised by the ending.
It's so sad that it's one of two movies that I've vowed to never watch again (and that aren't plain bad)
I actually highly recommend it. It's tough, tough watching, and you need to be in the right headspace but like (also semi-[auto]biographical) films such as The Pianist or Boys Don't Cry I feel it is totally worth it. I wouldn't call it a tearjerker, it's more a film about selfishness than anything.
I guess clannad does have a happy ending.
hmm, Battleship was much more fun than I expected it to be. plus it had women, disabled people, and elderly people kicking ***, which is awesome.
I wish I'd seen it in theaters just for this scene:
File it under the same heading as 'A Knights Tale' - films that have absolutely no right being as good as they actually turn out to be.....
Seriously. I love A Knights Tale. It's a brilliant film. But look at it on paper, and it should be a massive pile of elephant wank!
I liked it.
Especially when they broadside the aliens.
yup, a Knight's Tale is genius. I really enjoyed Battleship, and like you say, it shouldn't have been any good at all.
I just find it hard going.
When it works, it absolutely works - Akira for instance remains a favourite.
But so many just seem to have very lazy, emotionless and wooden dubbing - it ruins it. And not a fan of the 'you can tell they're angry, because they're head has enlarged' thing.
watch FLCL. only six episodes, so will only take two hours.

So taking the better half to see Final fantasy distant worlds saturday, which means I have free time in London,
Now I have a short list of places I should go but what do people think of them?
Natural history museum,
Science museum,
British museum,
Imperial war museum,
and possibly the national portrait gallery (apparently its across road from the British museum?).
Any suggestions?
Independent House, Marsh Wall, around 1 pm, so you can wave at me as I leave work to go home. And see my well snazzy car with all it's stickers!
