Who do you think is the best grey knight HQ?
'Best' is a highly ambiguous term. Do you mean the one with the coolest rules, the one which looks coolest, the one that is the most value for his/her points cost? Or maybe the one who's background you like, who has the coolest name, who is the highest rank, has the best stats?
For what it's worth, I'm running a Librarian and Brotherhood Champion.
Im wanting to know the best HQ for points, im thinking i really like crowe because he makes purifiers troops. but overall im thinking i will run him with a librarian, what will probably happen for me in a 1750 is 2 razorbacks with a shooty bit of purifiers and a full LR with crowe and a some termies/purifiers in a storm raven with the librarian
Grand Master is my pick :D
The GM and the Libby are stand outs, Coteaz has some real possibility. The rest are fluffy or just not worth it. IMHO
the single best has to be draigo.
he'll prolly smash any other HQ into the ground in 1v1 melee.
best fighting power per points is the inquisitor with deamon-weapon. he's insanely cheap and rolling half decent will net you a formidable fighter.
libby and grandmaster on the other hand offer very good utility to the whole army (something you'll need more than melee power in a list of force-weapon wielding monsters...).
My favorite is Mordrak. The whole thing with the Ghost Knights is like the plot of some fantasy sci-fi movie about revenge playing out on the table top. Awesome.
I wouldn't say best, but the ones I like are Coteaz, Karamazov, GM, Champion and Librarian. The Champion is great as an extra HQ, specially in games at lower points. Coteaz enables a whole new kind of army. Karamazov Has a great aura, and his rules are very interesting.
Fluff-wise, I still got love for Stern - ok, so his rule means your game is gonna be compromised by re-rolls, but I love that there is a Changer of Ways ever trying to bring about his demise so he can consume his soul. It must make Grey Knight banquets a bit frosty;
"Look, Stern, me and the lads have been talking...maybe you should stay home for the next purification."
"What? Why?"
"Well, we've noticed that...look, it seems every time you have a close shave with the Great Enemy, they seem to redouble their efforts and then someone always bites it. Brother Tobias..."
"...I knew you'd be like this! It's not my fault, okay? How would you like a Changer of Ways stalking you across the galaxy, huh? Do you think I wanted this?".....etc etc etc
*aside to other GK "It's gonna be a looong night..."
all of them seem to be quite good IHMO! GM for the expensiove:i can do anythin! option
bro-captin/ champ for the KILL KILL kill option
mordak for the 'im like a awsome tombspyder but i make termies!' option
libby for awsomeness
dragio for the badass grampa option
personaly i love mordak! he looks cool, but cortez is needed for that all important :
100pts charecter that makes GK have cannon fodder!
LMAO Bad *** Grampa Action!!!
i like the libby properly equiped with psypowers he is just devestating. plus he is the only GK with a psyhood.
netx in line would be Grand Master.
Has anyone found a woay of using crowe?
it seems hes just a fire magnet thats only purpous it to take purifiers as troops :P
i agree with fuzzbuket, the only use i have found for crowe is purifiers and taking out enemy characters although when he and a squad of paladins hits out of a LR or a SR they tear **** up, but i see true potential in the librarian, i played him once and i kelled 2 monoliths with him, using warp rift. i see real potential in the Gm and libby combo along with servo skulls, and the libby using quicksilver on a squad of daemonhammer termies is pretty devistating especially when assaulting out of a SR or LR
You can't attach Crowe to a unit of Paladins. Paladins cannot benefit from Crowe's reroll to hit, either. They can assault separately, but any GK HQ attached to a Paladin unit will wreck face on the charge.
were does it say that russel crow cant jion paladins and give them reroll to hit cause he does have titan herald
i also love the libby for my new fave combo
'the shunt punch x10000'
libby (vortex,summon, servoskull,stave) 200pts
5 paladin (4 faclhions,banner,apothecary)'
land raider crusader psybolts (or redeemer with psyflame) AND warp armour
(you may want to give the libby a bodyguard)
1) deploy land raider. with paladinsin your rear lines
2) make libby deepstrike
3) use summoning
4) ta-da a landraider with paladins that can jump out and massacre units quick!
Maybe Im just being dense, haha, but what is the deal with Crowe? He isnt that great in combat compared to the normal champion and makes the enemy better if they charge him. The cleansing flame is cool, but beyond that his lack of super sword I think is a downfall. And the purifier troop thing is prob the main reason I couldl justify taking him. Any thoughts?
the purifiers. his rules suck though. he can be effective as an anti-HQ unit with his 4+ rending, I10 attacks, and heroic sacrifice(50% chance to take out a character when he dies). in all reality though, i would opt for a libby or GM over him anyday.
now really if your bringing purifiers they're gonna be part of your main assault force. they will be taking alot of your opponants attention. having them score is kinda a waste. i mean do you want to attack with them or hold objective points. i use them for the former.
GKSS are the best objective holders if you can give them cover.
on sat. i had a game that around turn 4, im holding 3 of 5 objectives my opponent trys to rush one point with 3 obliterators to contest to force a draw. my 5 GKSS are on the point hiding in cover he gets within 6" i assault with HH and wipe out all the oblits saving my win. GKSS are obj. holders, thats what ive found to be most effective.(so far)
so back to the point, Crow just sucks, he is useable but he just sucks.
if you really want scoring purifiers take a GM. way better ,way more effective.
I think im going with mordrak and a GM because mordrak is pretty much a mix between jesus and chuck norris and just rips **** up, but he offers a very viable distraction because he has the best deep strike rules in the game, coming in first turn and not scattering is pretty impresive, and tag along a GM with paladins in a LR redeemer to help him just is full of win, and 2 Grand Stradegy rolls is pretty much the best thing ever, i mean think about scouting a land raider 12 inches forward how scary is that??
I don't play grey knights and will not play them, but have been reading there book.
I think it's the guy who lets you take Hench men as troops. (Can't remember how his name is spelled.)
The Henchmen become Scoring Troop units that don't take up FoC Chart slots. Sucks because you still need some grey knights to fill out your two troop min, but awesome because you can then take multiple small units of henchmen still the cows come home.
Wrote a halioures list using units of 3 jakreo and chimeras to make a lascannon gun line-o-death.
But besides that even in a more pure greyknight army. He gives you a cheap scoring unit with long range firepower to sit on and hold your own objectives. A unit that Grey knights otherwise don't have acess to.
Librarians if you are looking for cheapest. Being able to use two powers per (player)turn and have an 5++ in Terminator armour. Using the Librarian to cast Hammerhand and Quicksilver, while the Grey Knights activate their force weapon equals a lot of dead S.O.Bs.
A Mastercrafted Sword, and Quicksilver will see you through a lot of combats since striking first with power weapons is huge. If he is with your CC unit then take Quicksilver for sure. If you know you tend to face a lot of horde armies, sanctuary does not hurt either.
Librarian- MC Nemesis Force Sword and Quicksilver 160pts.
GrandMasters are another great support hero that is no slouch at CC either. If you find you are dealing with a bunch of people who strike before you then I would maybe recommend a Halberd, but the 3++ is just ace. Combined with Hammerhand and Rad Grenades, you will be wounding on 2+ for Marines and Guard, and IDing any GEQs.
Giving him Rad grenades will allow you to chop any unit. 5pt Incinerators are awesome, combined with his 3++ from using his Nemesis Force Sword in CC will make sure he sticks around for a bit.
GrandMaster- MC Nemesis Force Sword, Rad Grenades, and Incinerator 200pts.
Both of these characters are the best support characters you can have.
If we are talking about a 1500-1000pts game then a plain Brotherhood Champion fits the bill quite will since he can fit in most transports, can kill any MC or IC thanks to his power.
1)Cast Hammerhand and Quicksilver with Librarian.
2)Activate Nemesis weapons in the Grey Knight unit.
3)????
4)Profit!!!
