That's right folks. He wants to scrap race discrimination laws......because on no account must the job go to the person best qualified. It must go to the most qualified Brit.....
FFS. There is nothing stopping anyone from employing whosoever they wish. The way Farage is going on about it, you'd think being Polish is an advantage in the job market.
As the article says - these laws are about preventing 'No Blacks, Irish' etc' signs and job adverts.
Isn't it just in the same vain as when Gordon Brown said British jobs for British workers?
And even with race discrimination laws in place I've seen three of my employers cull every "foreign sounding" name from their pile of applicants before deciding even considering who to interview. if people want to discriminate they'll do it anyway.
But not openly, and there's punishment if you're caught.
Whereas Old Nige is determined to drag us back into the dark ages of british politics.
The thing is, this relies on the presumption that people always hire foreigners over natives, when the opposite is most often true.
In my limited anecdotal experience, though, people who emigrate here are pretty hard working - you have to be in order to journey over just to get work, there's a determination there. That person is going to do a better job, and with the decent level of education on much of the continent, a lot of them speak better English than the natives.
We hire internationally out of necessity, as our field is so niche you couldn't just choose British applicants. The current system still demands we provide hard proof that the foreign candidate is superior to British candidates that applied, in order to receive a Visa. In addition, we need people with robust English language skills, because it involves a lot of technical chatter and precise following of orders for tasks. We've had some people that crashed and burned in interviews because of the language barrier, even people who looked great on paper, but that's just life, and sadly it would be too much to work with compared to other candidates.
However, my team currently has Americans, Portuguese, Malaysian, South African and other nationalities, in addition to British nationals. All of them speak great English and are highly trained, those are the kinds of candidates we need, and we need to stretch to an international scope to get those applicants. Farage's rather stupid plan would have us dredging up the local "talent," bog us down with training and educating people, and how would that in any way benefit business in Britain?
The best candidates should always win, regardless of who they actually are as a person.
Yup.
If your chosen career path involves jobs which can be done by someone who doesn't speak the language, then trust me, it's not immigration that's the problem.
As for Poles?
Many came here and set up as builders, plumbers, electricians. Why? Because they're qualified, and do it cheaper than native ones, and apparently to a much better standard. That's not immigration - that's the free market economy working as it's meant to - victory to the best mixture of cost and service.
It's also labouring under the misapprehension that we don't have 'tidal' immigration. Polish folk came over, made an absolute mint through hard graft, saved up, bought a nice place back home, and left again having become pretty much set for life. They've improve their lives, and bully to them for that.
