The lovely Conservative co-alition Government wish to raise have just restored VAT from 15% to 17.5% which resulted in a GW price rise over here. Now however they want to raise it a further 2.5% to 20% to reduce the Dept owed by Britain.

Woe on us over here is that's the case as it just gives GW an excuse to bump up prices....again O_o

'Emergency services ring-fenced' yet we have to save an apparent 6 million over next 2 years. So far we have an overtime ban with, no doubt, other junk underway. Don't put anything past these guys Except making bankers pay, obviously.

Makes me glad I emigrated to Canada. The HST in British Columbia doesn't seem so bad after all.

Don't forget - you voted for the guys

Well, the rise of the VAT in the UK won't affect other countries, so America, Canada, Asia, etc., are safe from feeling the effects.

However, the flipside of the coin is that ForgeWorld prices will increase, because it has a single location of operation for a global market. When the VAT went down, ForgeWorld lowered its prices. Now that the VAT is going back up, ForgeWorld will adjust its prices accordingly.

Yeah, man. HST is a big 'meh'.

20%? That's crazy.

Wow. I'm glad I live in America. Even California taxes aren't nearly that high. Though I suppose there are probably plenty of differences elsewhere in the tax code.

I agree though for me i just pop dont to a store called Military Simulations where most GW products are 20% always all year round.

EG; in Aus a baneblade would cost me $168 i think, well at there price i only paid $128. Most boxes are ony $44 for trrops.

If if they dont have they will order it for yu. Love that store.

Unfortunate but necessary, massive guvmint debt=bad times. I just hope GW don't use it as an excuse to raise prices in foreign currencies as well.

I hope Forge World stops charging VAT on sales made overseas now that it's reached ridiculous levels. I always understood that it didn't apply on exports but they don't take it off.

?! They should not be charging VAT on exports, might want to ask them about that.

Agreed. You cant blame the current Goverment for the mess the previous goverment made of things.

Dont buy from GW direct where possible, the internet is your friend.

Goodbye Games Workshop, its been fun for the past ten years but now we must part ways.

You still havn't done any 5th edition codices for my many xenos armies and now I can't afford to update them if you ever do release the books.

You have just priced me out of the hobby.

You can get cheap GW from the internet and ebay.

And GW have not put VAT up yet, and when (if) they do it is not by the choice of them. Its the governments choice.

Plus you never know, GW might be kind to us and not put up the VAT on there products and just absorb the extra costs. Just as the Games industry might do and is currently thinking about doing.

This Price rise would not be GW fault at least.

Warhammer 40k, and table top wargaming in general, is still a very cheap hobby to get into.

Compared to what? Flying a personal jet? ;)

Anyway I don't understand why people are blaming GW for the UK gov's actions?

--

Oh yeah, and probably the #1 reason Americans pay so much less in taxes is lack of services like universal health care. Most Canadians simply could not imagine having to pay for medical treatment.

Oh yeah, and probably the #1 reason Americans pay so much less in taxes is lack of federalized services. Most Canadians simply could not imagine having timely medical treatment.

I've played airsoft and paintball, as well as cycling and climbing, and a host of other hobbies/activities, as well as drinking heavily, and miniatures is probably the cheapest of them all. I don't have an XBox, but for the cost of one, plus a few games a year, I'm imagining it's comparable as well. I won't start in on golf.

The only thing I do/have done that is cheaper overall is running...and even then, I eat a lot more when I am running significant daily distances than I do when I'm not, so you could probably factor that in too.

I used to shoot target regularly... my new IG army cost about the same as my modestly-equipped AR-15. Expensive is relative, I guess.

I probably spent, what, 600 $ at most, over the past 12 years on my Dark Eldar. Yeah, they are not painted.

I have spent more than that in a single year in Role playing books for EACH edition of DnD since 1998. Magic the gathering? I have two standard decks that cost me around 200 - 300 dollars each, and these decks need ot be updated every 3 months. Computer games? Comic book collecting? Boardgames? My collection of boardgames is not large, but when they go anywhere from 40 - 100 bucks per, man o man, these things can get pricey.

Yes, wargaming is one of the cheapest 'dork' hobbies you can get into because you pay for your army once, and you do not need to update it, like, ever. Maybe once a decade. And even then it is only a few units.

I won't even touch the subject of the hobby on the internet. I bought a 3000k Ogre Kingdoms army last week for 130$ on bartertown.com. If I try to buy magic cards, they aren't cheaper than if I bought them in my local store..

Anyway, I know you are being sarcastic... But I stand by the fact that yes, 40k is a cheap hobby.

I've got to admit I struggle with complaints of being 'priced out of the hobby'. No one's expecting anyone to buy an army per month and splash 100's of £/$/€. Realistically, I doubt anyone will be actually completing more than 1 unit per month on average - think of all the unpainted stuff we've all got, if we worked on what we bought I doubt anyone would buy more than a box or 2 a month so that averages at like £30 or so. Less than one computer game, less than one good night out, less than some concert tickets, you get the idea.

Folk shouldn't take out their frustrations over the UK's finances on GW - most companies dropped it when it went to 15% and they all jumped at the chance to get it back to 17.5% as soon as they could - that's not GW screwing anyone over, it's just how it is. If it hadn't gone down then it wouldn't go back up; we've gone back to paying what we were paying before, it ain't exactly a price hike!

I spent £43 last month and got a display model painted and a new 10 man squad that's added variety to my Angels Sanguine plus a few other bits. That's not bad for a month worth of hobby time, and I consider that an expensive month yet I'm not left broke. Like Buffo said above, there's much more demanding hobbies spend wise - I like cycling? £1,000 start up cost please! On the other hand if I don't want to spend money on models this week then I won't.War gaming has no minimum spend to get the ball rolling, buy a single figure for a few £ or dive right in with rules, battle forces and paint sets, it works either way.

The only reason to abandon this hobby (and an already sizeable investment in the army you own) is that you can't control your spending, in which case you'll have the same issues what ever your hobby!

oh is that all, i think ive spent well over $3000 dollors or more just on my SoB, i lost count and i dont want to scare myself by knowing...most likely more than $3000 to be honest.

Now i agree there are more seriously costs with hobbies, heck ive seen people have more in Remote controlled planes and cars than they do in household goods.

Yah 40K is by far one of the cheepest hobies ive done...

U want expensive, Fly RC helicopters...

Put it this way, when I sold my 3 birds I payed for 2 full armies, paints and had a tonne of cash left over.
Had I kept them, My big ones cost about 100-200 per crash.... So u do the math, this is peanuts...

Somtimes a month or go by between army purchesses, We all have things to paint... Learn to control your spending and not the need to own every single unit and use half of them....

The ladies on here have a wonderful sense of humor, so no harm, no foul...

Sorry. I don't want to clump all females on here together. There is one with no sense of humor. But we all know who that is anyway.
