FW Ultramarines Ven. Dreadnought

Hi! I have been playing Ultramarines for awhile and got this model recently. I have a youngbloods painting competion coming up. If you have an advice you would like to give, please do so. Thanks!

I definitely approve, mate. For a youngblood, it's very well painted. The blood pooling on the base is pretty awesome, as is the plasma cannon you've got there.

As for constructive tips, I personally would have painted the Tyranid with something that contrasts more with the blue of the Ultramarines (for instance, Red/Bone) to make it stand out more. Also, more thin layers of white will yield a less chunky look to the paint.

For the UM symbols, decals are your friend. If you don't like those, or your symbol is too small, this tutorial is pretty nice: http://ventris-4thcompany.blogspot.com/2009/03/painting-ultramarines-symbol.html.

i'd say toss some light blue in on the plasma cannon coil to give some lighting effects, other then that, Great Job

You have the basics. Its neat enough.

You do need to thin your paint. You cant really use it straight from the pot. You will find it easier (but not quicker alas) if you use thin layers and build up the color gradually.

I like the base alot. I dont like the name on the base. Painting words is very hard to do well (I cant do it) and if you cant, then its better left alone. Free hand markings are the same, you need lots of practice for it to look half decent.

Its a good looking model as a whole and I would say its above avarage for a young painter.

wow i remember painting up a FW dread for youngbloods last year at conflict.

it neat and the blood and dead tryinid are very, very good

two bits of CC

1) the same advice i got : neaten up the text
2) id change the white bacause it looks a bit thick


apart from that well done, what competition is it for ? im sure most of us on the lounge (especialy other youngblood eligables like ultramarine fan and i ) would like to know how you did :D

I finished my fw ultras ven dread just at the end of last month funnily enough, in our painting comp though I came second(though it was to a monolith with built in lights). Anyhow I notice your white 'script' is a bit on the thick side to pass off as writing, this is something I used to do too and what I do now is I paint the 'script' and if I find it's too thick then I just go back on the edges with the base colour to make the lines a bit thinner, therefore making them more like script.

sorry if this seems like a rant but if you want to upload either BOLS gallery or CMON

if you havent visited CMON beafor id reccomend it very very nice painting and good articals :D (the scoring is VERY harsh BTW)

sadly i refuse to vote on dakka due to the amount of C&P from other sites and artists (a monster from hordes C&P'd from PP got a very high rating as a converted fex :( :mad: )
