What's the coolest scene that's ever played out on the game board for you? I'm talkin' 'bout something that happens on the tabletop that's totally sci-fi, horror, action-movie-esque but in miniature form.

For example, for me, back in 4th ed. with my Tyranids, I was playing in a Medusa V campaign at a local tournament, against Chaos Space Marines. The objective was to destroy a building objective, all elite units counted as having melta bombs for the sake of the mission if I remember right, something like that. Anywho, I had my lictor pop up in the most awesome piece of terrain ever- an old water well. So in game terms, my Lictor, in true horror movie fashion, crawled out of a well like a chameleonic badass, assaulted the building objective less than 3" away, and blew it to kingdom-come to win the game ^_~

My brother always goes on about how Wazdakka jumped off a wrecked chimera to rip the cockpit off of a Valkyrie.

My friend still hasn't glued the cockpit on to this day, instead preferring to leave it in craters when it explodes.

My farseer and Howling Banshee carrying Wave Serpent being chased through the ruined streets of a city by three buzz saw wielding deff koptas was pretty nifty. It was quite tense, there were other Orks everywhere so I had to be careful where I moved it, but eventually I managed to bring up a few war walkers to take out the deff koptas and the WS proceeded to decant its cargo. They then proceeded to annihilate the Ork Warlord and his retinue. All very dramatic.

Let see if I can remember this correctly.

I was playing my home brewed Black Templars “The Lions of the Emperor” and I was playing my buddy in a mini campaign. He had guard so we had the traitor guard that had taken over the manufacturing planet and we were there to reclaim it.

I had two foot slogging crusader squads of 15 or so, 10 initiates and 5 neophytes one lead by the emperors champion and supported on that flank by a vindicator.

They moved up through the rubble strewn streets towards one of the manufactorums where a guard command squad was camped out on the roof supported by a chimera full of regular guard and a Leman Russ.

First turn I move everything up and run, vindicator moves up.

Then it all goes to hell

The auto cannon team across the board takes some side armor shots and destroys Demolisher cannon and immobilizes the vindicator before it gets one shot off.

A couple of sentinels out flank on that board edge

Long story short, TWO battle brothers assault the sentinels to keep them busy, the champs whole squad is dead.

The lone champ survives fire from the command squad, no wounds, survives fire from the Leman Russ (two heavy bolters and a hull mounted las cannon!) no wounds; he survives the heavy bolter from the chimera and the multi laser! NO WOUNDS!

He leaps at one of the command squad at the base of the building and assaults the squad, kills them all between combat and sweeping advance!

Next turn the chimera dumps a full 10 man squad in front of the champ! Champ again survives fire from the Leman Russ, multi laser on the chimera with no wounds, and then the whole squad rapid fires the champ! He takes one wound and then on the next round slaughters the whole squad with the sweeping advance!

Next turn he charges across the open field at the Leman Russ!! The Russ fires everything it has to stop the rampaging champ, the heavy bolter fire is deflected by his armor and the las cannon MISSES!

The champ leaps onto the Leman Russ and explodes it!

He goes on to survive the rest of the game!

We were both just AMAZED at the champs luck, the emperor was surely with him that day

I remember two cinematic moments:

first was a planetstrike game wih E4 nids against chaos space marines.

I had my stealer-lord (back when he was good, s6 power weapon and all that) and his retinue of pimped up stealers sitting in a bunker with the escape tunnel stratagem.

Khorne berserkers with khornate lord get near the bunker, the stealers jump out and surround the zerkers funnily this is a 1:1 fight and we arrange the figures in two circles.

the heroes both exchange blows but nothing happens (khornate lord is unable to hit/wound and in return passes all his 5++ saves). meanwhile the stealer retinue slaughters the berzerkers to the last man. chaoslord then dies to no-retreat wounds. deamon infused he fight good and even the most furious creature could not wound him in direct duell but then he goes down to the tide of aliens :D

second was a scenario game with my renegades (with IG codex) and anggrath (the big bloodthirster) against space marines. I had my chaos sorcerer (primaris psyker) attached to a platoon command squad sitting on a khornate blood altair (one of the objectives).

I had first turn and the psyker lost a wound to perrils and fried a dreadnought with his lightning (well ok technically it wasnt dead. only immobilized and lost it's ranged arm but fair enough for just s6!). After that my oponent fired all his ranged weapons on that tiny 6 man squad and managed to kill one modell per turn. I jokingly said that they werent dying to enemy fire but the psyker just sacrificed one of his pals each turn to keep the altairs shields online :D.

and to add to the situation anggrath didnt turn up until the squad was dead (I managed to fail every single reserve roll for him) to the last man.

There's differend kinds of cool...

I always love it every time an infantry-centric Guard army goes off against an infantry-centric Ork army. THAT is cool, the armies of humanity battling off the neverending barbarian hordes is just awesome whether in a futuristic setting or a fantasy one.

The best one on one mental image I've done is when a celestian squad charged Abbadon, and he slew all but the sister superior (with power weapon and bolt pistol) on the first turn. Then she survived three turns of combat, and killed him. And then when the dust settled, she stood ontop of his corpse, and the victorious Sisters army routed three different Chaos Space Marine squads on the last turn. Oh yes, that player was had replaced his dice the next time he played against me :) Only good roll he had was when he killed my Canoness on turn one.

I had a throw away unit of five IST's against a SW terminator force. Using the IA2 rules for Inquisitorial Valks, I used grav chute insertion on turn 4 to deep strike the IST's within 8 inches of a unit of 10 termies. Fortunately, no scatter was rolled, and they landed on target. I then unloaded with two plasma guns and a combi-plasma, scoring 5/6 hits, and 5/5 wounds! The Termies, in turn, failed all but one of the saves, forced to take a panic test, and proceeded to roll box cars. The IST's spent the next turn escorting them back to their camp.

Back in 4th ed, played against 4th ed Tyranid's sing the 3rd ed BA codex.

I had infiltrated a scout unit with a PW sgt 12" away from a relatively lone Hive Tyrant. The Scouts rolled for Rage, got the 6", and went straight for the Tyrant, peeled off a wound from bolt pistols and charged into it. The scouts sold their lives to kill that tyrant. It was like a small kill team mission during an actual game

Best Scene ever?

My Orks fighting Guard in a 5,000 point Apoc Game.

The Skullhammer lost its main gun, still had all its structure points.

Baneblade 18 inches away, one Structure point left.

Ramming speed Boyz!!! WAAAGH!

Penetrating Hit. Structure point removed. Kabooom!!! And a BIG boom too :P

Mine was when I was playing mech IG with my Chaos. My CSM squad was just being hammered all game by tanks, vets, and eventually Marbo. In the end, I only had my Champion with a power weapon and meltabombs left.

My opponent had flat out moved his Vendetta 24" towards my objective at the end of turn 4. I roll a 6 for my DT movement, then another 6 for my assault, actually getting into assault with the flying laser beam of annoyance. Roll to hit: 6. Roll to pen: 4 - penetrated, roll for damage: 5.

I took out a flying vehicle with a single meltabomb.

My theory is that he suddenly got a stroke of awesome and casually tossed the bomb into the air, and turned his back so the burning wreckage would rain down behind him in an utter display of badassitude. Unfortunately, the Champion did not survive the game to become a Daemon Prince of Awesome.

you dont need to physically survive the battle to be granted deamonhood (in this case post mortem) and be send back to the material plane.

albeit regardless of how awesome this action was a single 2-soul flier doesnt warrant deamonhood in the eyes of the gods of chaos ;). this however doesnt stop you from doing this in YOUR 40k :)

Best moment: Two Veteran squads of mine, while facing nids, were forced out of their Valkyries (one exploded, one immobilized with several weps gone. They proceeded to take five wounds off of a Tyrannofex with shotguns and lasguns, then the squad with shotguns charged and killed it. Out of five wounds inflicted with AP- weapons, I believe one 2+ save was passed.

Other amazing moment: My Vendetta, in another game against a Nidzilla list, singlehandedly killed both my opponent's Trygons. Singlehandedly. It now has part of a Trygon carapace affixed to the upper fuselage :D

I seem to have one of these everytime I do a battle report to put up here...

In the first one, Yarrick got charged by a Fex and reduced to one wound. He then proceeded to remove every last wound from said 'Fex and took its head off.

In the second one, my Broodlord died after the Company Champion he was fighting passed his Combat Shield save and struck back and killed it. He may or may not have had WS1 at that point.

In the most recent game I just put up (plugareedoo) my Talos got charged by a Warboss and 5 Nobz and lost all but 1 wound. It then put up with 3 turns of combat with 1 Wound left even as 'Scape7 added a Killa Kan and 'Ard Boyz into the mix, killing the worst stuff as it went.

To find out if the Talos survivved the game, read the batrep.

A buddy and I did a huge kitch game centered around Col. Schaffer's Last Chancers. We used Sly Marbo's rules to represent Kage and a Lord Commissar's to represent Col. Schaffer. If the Tau player killed Col. Schaffer, the entire army takes a Ld test every turn to see if they desert because the jailer is gone. If Kage kills the Tau commander (Sha's El-Jackson, the only black tau) the game ends.

Col. Schaffer and 3 squads of penal legionnaires break through the wall of kroot and into combat with Sha's El-Jackson and friends, supported by 3 broadsides and a swarm of vespids. Kage appears and joins in the fray. 4 blood soaked turns of combat end with Schaffer going down and Kage left against Sha's El-Jackson 2 wounds and a shield drone. Kage scores 3 wounds which are promptly failed with 3 straight 1's rolled. Kage carries Col. Schaffer back to friendly lines where he is healed to plan the next last chance.

Last year at BoLSCon, I ran one of the Narrative tables. In the last game it was Orks vs. Imperials and the Imperials took the Capitol Imperialis. Towards the end of the game the Ork player had finally managed to whittle down all of the VOID shields but didn't have any guns left to shoot at it.

So he used the Lifta-Droppa arm on a Stompa to pick up a Drop Pod and hurl it at the side of the Imperialis, luckily scoring a hit and then proceeded kill it with the gut busta cannon-- rolling six 6's in a row for a spectacular chain reaction death to the Imperialis. It was pretty epic.

My favorite personal moment was an Apoc game of Ork against Imperials and I was trying to capture an objective surrounded by a minefield, guarded by Stracken, IG Priest and some Grey Knights. There was almost no chance of making it, so I drove my Trukk flat out into the minefield, the Trukk exploded but I got just the perfect Ramshackle roll to deposit Ghazghkull and his Nobz on the far side of the minefield in assault range of the squad.

Just not quite far enough though, as I could only engage the Priest and some minions and I failed to kill anyone. The next turn Stracken and the Grey Knights slaughtered Ghaz and the Nobz. After such a lucky series of events to get into assault, it appeared all my luck was burnt out.

One of my first outings with the BA PDF rules a few years ago culminated in a Death Company unit being ripped apart by shooting followed by the one lone DC that remained (no chaplain mind you so he HAD to do this) shooting, charging and assaulting a full squad of termagaunts that had just shot them up. He died, but not until the third round of combat and took out quite a number of termys with him. Feel no Pain kept him alive quite well.

The best moment I had so far was in a tournament against this guy I was playing who had an all mek Space Marine army. I was playing IG and had pretty much just started so I didn't even have a single melta gun. He was pretty cocky player and rolled up his landraider right to my front gun line, disembarking his assault terms right in front of my heavy bolter squad. After shooting the squad up pretty good to where there were about three guards men left, he assaulted them. My guardsmen took down three of his terms because he rolled ones on armor save.

The scene was epic in my mind because of the way that the terms rolled up and disembarked then got killed by Guardsmen. I imagined the guardsmen holding until the Terms were right on them and then shooting the bolters point blank range before finally getting hit by a hammer or claws. Best way for the guardsmen to go out!
