It's time to paint up the pile of Space Wolves of miniatures that lurk under my work table. First up: a venerable dreadnought:

The model is a pewter Space Wolves dreadnought I bought around 2003. I added a banner, some green stuff fur, and a couple random plastic bitz before painting.

It's not quite finished yet, but it's reached the "set it aside for a couple weeks and make sure I'm happy" stage. I'm still very new to miniature painting, and I'll prbably want to make some changes as my skills improve. Once I'm sure it's done, I'll give it one more coat of matte varnish and finish the base with snow flocking and a bit of brown static grass.

If you'd like to see more views (including some "in progress" photos), I wrote up the process and put it online here: http:http://rightcrafttool.blogspot.com/2010/06/wip-venerable-dreadnought-part-05.html (http://rightcrafttool.blogspot.com/2010/06/wip-venerable-dreadnought-part-05.html)

A squad of (poorly-named) Grey Hunters:

Edit: added this group photo, using a lighter exposure setting on my camera.

If you'd like to read more about this unit (say, for example, you're wondering what the heck I was thinking when I painted them; or what I learned when I was done.) I posted some notes on my blog at http://rightcrafttool.blogspot.com/2010/06/greyerrrred-hunters.html.

If you'd prefer the short version, here it is:

Orange highlights and black lines instead of harsh pink highlights.
Instead of drybrushing metallics, paint them completely and bring out the recesses and highlights with washes.
Snow flocking is a special-order item.

I feel like I'm learning the basics of miniature painting, but I would really love some feedback. The dreadnought slipped by without a single comment, but I doubt that was because it's perfect. If you've got a suggestion for my next unit, please let me know.

An interesting idea and to be honest, after looking at the dread, I didnt think it would work.

But having seen some infantry now, I think you might be onto something.

It looks like you have used a black wash there, and I like the fact that they are not bright red, but it does look at little on the heavy side.

More please...

That's pretty awesome. I like seeing red marines that aren't blood angels! Red is a color that I have not come close to mastering but you're results are awesome.
