Hey guys! I've been painting for about a year now, and I'm trying to branch out onto some other websites so I can use the collected knowledge to improve my abilities. This thread will be about my first army - a Catachan Imperial Guard regiment that's deployed on a Martian-style iron-oxide wasteland planet.
Before I start, I'd like to say that nearly everything I've painted this year has been for The Irongob Chef - a year-long painting competition that some of us over at Something Awful have been doing. Each month we get get a category (ie Elites or Special) to paint, and a theme ingredient, like last month was "The Power of Science (or Nature)". The theme ingredient has to be portrayed on the entry in some form, either subtly or obviously. It's a real motivator to get my armies painted, and the ingredients are actually pretty fun. The best part is that the competition has around 60-100 entries every month, and a few of these people are extremely good at what they do. Being able to get tips or just be around them for inspiration is one of the best parts about this contest.
Here's some of my favorite entries over the last few months:

That's a lot of photos but it doesn't even scratch the surface of what's been done for this contest. There is some prize support, but it's not really the focus of the contest. There are monthly prizes, like models, books and resin bases. There's also a few large end-of-contest prizes. I won the latest Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus a few months ago for my Ogre->Ogryn conversions:

If any of you guys would like to join in, that would be awesome. For some of you guys that are a little... sporadic with your painting, it's a great reason to actually get some work done. The only issue I can see is that you need a Something Awful membership and that's ten bucks (one time only). It sounds weird to have to pay for a message board, but it kind of acts as a deterrent to keep dumb kids out and high-quality threads in. I've had an unbelievable amount of use out of my ten bucks I spent 4 years ago. You can find the contest here:

This month I'm going to be painting a Hellhound and the parts to convert it and my old one into a Crusher Spearhead for the new 40k expansion. There's also a bonus contest for some objective markers. This post is already long enough (and I've already burned through the 4-images-per-post limit), so I'll post some more of my buff guys a little later.
As a side note, I'm not quite sure this is in the right place. I see in my user profile there's a section called "Blogs: 0", which sounds more appropriate for a user log. I'm not seeing a section for blogs anywhere on the main forum, though - can anyone point me to them?
