Ok then, the 23rd Joint Assault Group have been my army for a while now, but they've always been just that, an army, nothing special, and Joint Assault Group was the best way to explain them, with models from the Steel Legion, Cadian and soon Death Korps regiments, they've been a bit of a mix. And the paint jobs . . . well, the Steel Legion were my first ever painting, and are rubbish, utterly rubbish, barely even tabletop standard.
The Cadians were mostly a friend of mines who was selling them on at a fair old price, giving me the perfect excuse to gain some more infantry, and tanks, but the I bought it for the infantry, honest :D They are painted better than my Steel Legion, but in a completely different scheme, the standard Cadian theme (boring, no offence to those of you with them painted like that out there, but it really is a bit dull)
The Death Korps are still in the pending tray (Cardboard box they were delivered in) waiting to be built.
So, what triggered me to FINALLY get around to repainting my army? Well, our Summer of War Campaign actually, and if it fits the bill for the painting competition then all the better (yet to find out the rules for it!) Essentially we're playing a campaign that is designed to give people a chance to play with an army they want to use. You start with access to unlimited resources (points) but a limited pool to recruit from (1 HQ, 2 Troops), by playing games with your army you gain a point, by winning you gain another, by playing a game with a fully based army you get a bonus point, for the same but based you get another bonus point. Every 8 points grants you access to a force organisation slot of your choice. After playing the first couple after coming in late I figured I needed a bit of a helping hand, so I've decided to go ahead and re-paint the whole army in my new scheme and make it mine rather than a collection of a few models . . . well, a few by guard standards!
The fluff behind the army is that Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex fields his own Assault Groups using the best of the best, there are no regiments within these groups, several regiments fight together as one for the imperium under a Company Commander assigned by Rex himself, often one of his own men who have excelled in strategy. These groups are each designed for specific operations, some are jungle operatives, some are airborne assaulters, some fight on death worlds, the list goes on, but the honour of the 23rd is that of city fighting. They fight from street to street, backed up by armour specially designed for fighting in these tight confines and with pilots that some call insane and others call brilliant, able to fly within the confines of a city, landing their troops at critical ambush points or in a flanking position, then backing them up with their own firepower. Although the group often fights in locations other than cities, if there is a special task required in urban environments, the 23rd are called for, just as any other group would be called upon for their expertise in a particular field if they were needed.
So, onto some rubbish pictures, unfortunately I'm using my phone camera which is understandably useless without macro, but it'll give you an idea of what the scheme is and a couple of the units in the group. I should have a brand spanking new D-SLR within a few weeks so expect MUCH better pictures then!

Company Commander & Basic Squad:
Ok, a little kitbashing I did because I could and felt like it! And in anticipation of the comments about the banners, because I could :) However, since then I have reasons for them all, the single banner will be the Group banner, the pennant carried by the bannerman shows the Commander's colours, a rallying point essentially, and last but not least, the second banner the bannerman is carrying will be the Inquisitor's colours. The Company Commander can also double as a Commissar Lord if I feel like it, he has enough presence to pass as one, admittedly the red cap helps. You can't see the details of the painting scheme in this, but it's one of GWs Urban camos, the one with the tutorial!
