Only if the squad obscures 50% (or more) of the tank.

Bingo. Vehicles only ever get cover saves from being 50% obscured, or having a special rule that grants cover saves (like a kustom force field).

Just curious, but is it not in line with the rules that if a tank (or MC) is obscured but you cannot be certain if it is over 50% obscured or only 45% obscured to allow it a cover save reduced by one (i.e. 5+)??? I have always played it that way.

Yes, that's in line with the rules. You don't have to play it that way (you could instead dice off, or argue until one of you backed down), but the rules certainly give the 5+ compromise their blessing.
