After a 20 year break I've decided to give minature painting a spin again.

The storm of sigmar set was such a good price (with the essentials painting and modeling set) i have dived in (i only ever played 40k 2nd ed, but 40k doesn't seem to have any cheap starters like this).
Really enjoyed a bit of down time chilling out painting!

Any tips and comments are v welcome.
With a full time job and family l'm prob not going to be too much of a perfectionist, but would appricate a few pointers

1 thing i have realised, lightning metallics with white doesn't work well, it makes them look a bit weird and matt.
Guessing i need to buy the proper metallic highlight range.

More to come as i finish them

Looks really good, as you noted, metallics lose a lot of their shine when you mix them with non-metallic paints but I think you've got a great start.

I can recommend the Warhammer TV videos, they have loads of great tips for beginners and the hosts make it really easy to follow, I know a lot of people who have found them really helpful.

Thanks for the tip.
Those vids are very helpfully.
Hopefully i won't need to buy all those colours, paints were a lot cheaper on the 90's!!

Next up a blood reaver in a alternate scheme

Have ordered a few layer paints and shades.

Also a new set of brushes as the starter one is already looking a bit shabby and losing its fine tip/control (is the citadel starter brush just cheap or is it me being heavy handed?)

Comments welcome.

Cheers!

The paints do make a lot of difference.
Particularly the washes, they just make everything look better!!
The old (90s) ones just use to make models look dirty, they def didn't add the depth and shade that the new ones do.

Here's my latest one.
Still need to do the base, but think i should try something other than than the earth one that comes in the starter paint kit

try uploading to imgur it then provides you with a BB code under the share links that you can copy and paste straight in so you'll get a big embedded image like above. There's also limited editing so you can rotate it.

Shiny!

I think he came out ok, a bit on the bright side possibly

Trying out vallejo paints for the next model.
The little pots in the starter set dont go far and some of the colours (white and black) seem to dry out v quickly and are clumpy

From shiny to dark.

Tried out my new Vallejo paints.
In general they are very good, the dropper bottle is great and they don't seem to dry on the pallet (aka take away lid) as quickly

But I'm a lot less sure about the black wash.
Its very thick and dark and seems to heavily stain raised/ flat areas rather than just the recesses.
Am i missing something, should i thin it more heavily with water (i wasn't sure if that was a good idea)? Or are the GW ones just better?

Comparison of dark (Vallejo wash) vs light (gw wash) on the 3rd picture

The dark is actually growing on me now.
Its got a kind of comic book, extreme highlight vibe and the metallics look interesting (sort of sotty)

Which one do you think looks best?

I think I prefer the vallejo wash in this example :)

Next up Mr orange.

Not sure about the skin colour (Vallejo dark flesh) its lighter than expected and takes a lot of coats to stop looking streaky.
But i think the orange is nice, I'll be using that on the next model (on to the primes/champions in the starter set now)

Probably a few too many colours on this guy!
