I played in a tourney here at my local GW in frisco,TX today,(If you are in the DFW area, go check it out, the guys that run it, Justin and Dallas, are awesome) and I played in probably the funnest game iv'e played since Apoc came out. I was playing a guy named Joe(if your reading this Joe, thanks for the game) and he was a pretty cool guy. He had a well painted marine army with Lysander and i was running a balanced Salamander list with Vulkan(no thunder hammer termis) and we played Spearhead/ Capture and control. We both had so much random spats of luck and misfortune (I.e. my scout snpers kill 4 tac marines and pin them with no rends, and the next turn i miss with 4 twin liknked meltas) that we laughed the whole duration of the game. When his dreadnought (which lost its ccw) scaled the basilica and started headbutting the Tac squad the and couldn't kill any of them for 3 turns but killed one when he exploded,I knew that no matter how it turned out, it would be epic (we ended up in a draw, and a tie for third place). After this, I realised that there isn't really any other recreation that can provide these moments like 40k does. I thought about this for a while, and now i want to put the question to you guys: Is there any other game that can produce such epic (and comical) moments like 40k can? Iv'e played warmachine and other games, but i never got anything compared to they game i played today.

I once charged a squad of Terminators with gun drones from a Devilfish. They didn't really do anything but I had this funny picture in my head of the gun drones bashing themselves against the Terminators.

In another game, I had a congo line of a Defiler and 2 CSM squads in Rhinos. First turn goes to the guard who promptly blow up the Defiler. I redirect the Rhinos to go around. Next turn Marbo pops up to the side of one of them. The Russ blows the first one open leaving the occupants nicely bunched up. Marbo's charge kills the whole squad in one go.

In my last game, 2,000 points vs Tau and Space Marines, I had two 20-strong mobs of slugga boyz parked on my C7C objective with a big mek who had a kustom force field, and they survived five turns of fire from two whirlwinds. The one break test they had to make in the fifth turn they passed, because of the warboss who was also there. I also killed Marneus Calgar with my meganobz, because he had no escort. It's nice to not be a noob.:p

I once had a single Guardsman hold his own against three Tau Crisis Suits for 3 turns before they stepped on him.

In a recent 3-game campaign, my opponent's Chapter Master Pedro Kantor was killed all three games by the same Vet. Sgt. I painted over the "Sgt." on his base and painted in "Lt."

It's times like these that make the game worth playing. Any game can produce such great moments. What really makes the difference is the people who appreciate and remember them.

Two of my friends were playing a Planet strike game. The attacker was loosing, badly. Next to last turn of teh game. Fired at one of the bastions and got lucky. But the bastion exploded. Plus the Arms Cache was in it which then also exploded. Which set of a chain reaction of two gun emplacements also exploding along with one rhino full of troops (only one didn't make his save). And also took out a Defiler, that also exploded. Nearly changed who won the game.

Oh and throughout all this the squad of Obliterators that were in the tower were completely unscathed.

I played my Necron Lord against a group of terminators [like, 5] with a warscythe and killed all of them. In the re-match, the same thing happend but the other guy and I kept rolling ones and we laughed--they just shook their fists at each other.

I really can't think of another game that has so many awesome moments (Maybe Munchkin, but that depends more heavilly on the players than just silly luck) that happen so often, or that are so distinctive.

I remember one of the last games I played back in 3rd Ed with 1500 points of Marines vs Marines. My opponant got the first turn and by the start of my second turn I only had a single space marine left. This lone marine then managed to assault each and every unit of the opposing army and managed to make all but one of them run off the table before he died. Unfortunately I never remembered to mark out which model it was, so now he lives in obscurity in one of my figure cases.

Some of my best game stories are Warmachine, Battletech, and anything involving Imperial Guard bionics in 3rd and 4th ed.

In a 35 point warmachine game I survived eCaine's feat turn with eButcher and in the next turn went on to kill every model in both armies (mine included) except for the Butcher himself and one Doom Reaver.

In the old cardboard cut-out tabletop Battletech game a friend of mine brought down my two undamaged Turkina bravos and one half injured one with one undamaged Stealth.

I have had a commissar make his bionics role and get up, shoot down a landspeeder, then assault a five man terminator squad, survive their attacks and run them off the board.

In another game my commissar, with one wound remaining, charged a full unit of broadsides and ran them off, survived a shas'o and his bodyguard's return fire, and then ran them off the board in the ensuing assault phase.

Second edition Space Wolves vs. Eldar. I was playing the wolves against my brother and kicking the tar out of him all over the table top. We had secret missions and his was "witch hunter." Being a wolf player, I couldn't very well retreat and take the victory. (especially playing against my brother, we always enjoyed complete humiliation when possible)

I brought Njal Stormcaller out into position to attack his last remaining squad, giving him one turn to shoot me. Njal was wounded 5 times needing a 3+ to save each wound. At the time, he had 4 wounds. I grab all 5 dice and proceed to roll 5 1's. My brother yells yahtzee! and flips over his mission card for the win.

Still one of the funniest moments in my life as a gamer.

I once won a game of Talisman as a toad!
I was on the Crown of command, got hit with a random, turned into a toad. Next turn the remaining player died to the Vampires. We laughed and laughed. Talisman is a great game! The image of a Toad with the Crown slipping down over one eye while he ribbits in triumph is one I shall cherish.

In 40k the best I can muster is a win against me where Korra'so Khan managed to pass a difficult terrain test to turbo off the table in the face of overwhelming odds vs my Necrons. We were playing "tomb raid" out of the back of the Nec 'dex. Great fun....Lucky *******.

I play Battletech (CBT) with a group of mates, and we played one scenario in a built up city with high rise buildings, and very narrow streets. One of the guys just runs his 12/18/0 locust right up the middle of the main street, and gets ambushed by heavy infantry with SRMs. His mech falls face first into the concrete, and the GM then reveals 3 Atlas (special mod) mechs, a Charger and then shoots the crapolla out of the mech.

We all laughed because he got impatient about our slow rate of advance scanning for ambushes and because the GM was using spotters to rain LRM missiles from vehicles down on our heads It did provide us early warning about the 4 assault mechs though, so 1 of our mechs actually survived the scenario.

I regularly get the measles with dice, you know, nothing but spots no matter how many you threw. However, man of the match recently went to the lone surviving storm guardian, who having had his whole unit complete with warlock burst into flames as a result of a vidicator hit, passed last man standing, made the 6" over difficult ground and hit the vindicator from max range with a fusion gun, repaying it the compliment from his squad.

Even my opponent said that his subsequent retreat, having failed the last man standing test a couple of turns later, was actually a well earned trip to the pub after a good days work.

Shadow Run:

There's a meeting of mob bosses in this one corporate office. The objective is to crash the party and kill everyone. There's guards in the receptionist's office, but we can take them out easy. The problem is, as soon as the shooting starts the bosses will beat feet to their secret escape. We need someone inside.

One of our street sams says he has a plan, and takes off. Unbeknown to us, his "plan" is to go up to the roof with a rope, tie it off, run off the roof holding one end of the rope, and swing in through the office's external window, which is several floors down from the roof. Yes, it was a stupid plan.

The GM sets ridiculously high target numbers for the action. The street sam roles his acrobatics. He roles a critical success, meaning not only did he succeed, but he looked real good doing it. He busts through the window and lands perfectly on the desk. So impressive was his entrance that the bosses are stunned for a moment. As he's sliding to a halt on the desk (like Tom Cruise in Risky Business ... only with his pants on) he draws two savalette guardians, takes aim at the bosses, and fires.

The street sam roles two (not one, two) critical failures. Both clips fall out of the guns. At this the bosses each reach into their jackets and produce hand-cannons of their own.

Out in the hall, we hear the commotion. We bust into the reception area, liquidate the guards and move to bust into the main office to save our sammy's arse. Our troll slams into the door. Nothing. He hits it again, and nothing still. Finally, in his third attempt he splinters it. On a door that was (for the troll) the consistency of wet tissue paper, he rolled two critical failures.

When we get inside, the bosses are gone. The one witness that might have told us where they went isn't saying much. Our friend is mostly a puddle at the end of the long table. No payday that day.

I just had a thirty-strong hormagaunt swarm lock four Paladins (one got Warp Lanced) and an attached Brother-Captain, who scattered in a most fortuitous (for me) manner, in an assault for six player turns.

True, they eventually broke after my Zoanthropes died and I had to move my Warriors out of Synapse range and yes it's true that they did end the game falling back but still... 174pts of hormagaunts completely nullified 425pts of the elite of the elite of the elite.

Suck it Emperor.

Blood Bowl.
Every turn has the potential for the craziest turn you've ever had.
You've got ogres picking up goblins to throw them, trolls eating goblins, vampires biting thralls, skaven moving from end to the other in one turn, dwarves barely moving, chainsaw wielding maniacs and all this can happen while a blizzard is going on.
Brilliant

I still remember in a game of Apocalypse when it was still new, of Dante with only one wound left surrounded by Shrike, an attached chaplain and a virtually intact, tool-up to the max Shrike Wing.

All Dante did was simple: pick up vox, and said: "Orbital strike on my position". The look on my opponent's face must be the same as what Shrike must have looked as he realized he forgot his iron halo back in 4th edition.

When the smoke cleared, Dante stood up and viewed the devastation.. and didn't notice the chaplain sneaking up on him. Hirarity occurs.

My Nurglings tie up the Apocalypse Phoenix Lord formation for 4 Turns, backed up by Fateweaver. Cue severe depression in my opponent. Hilarious...

Epic Win: 1500 points of unpainted, untested Black Templar hold of 5000 points of daemons and defends the main objective and the Commander who's worth two objective points. A single Crusader squad with a Chaplain fought and won against 3 Greater Daemons/Daemon princes.

Epic Fail: Wipe everything but a single leman russ demolisher of the board by round three. Despite meltabombs, melta guns, plasma guns and lascannons it stands unharmed and kills everything but one squad that breaks and run in the final round.

Much fun as wargaming is, in terms of fun and epic awesomeness normal tabletop rpgs will always be better.

I have two epic moments:
The best player moment was when I had my then-girlfriend play Warhammer for the first time. I play Necrons and she really liked the way I painted my models. She played her first game against a Chaos Space Marines player. We explained the rules as simply as we could and she caught on in short order. It was getting towards the end of the game and I had to tell her we'd have to go soon or we'd be late for dinner with my folks.

Now imagine this: This gorgeous, tiny little Indian woman who looks like Selma Hyak, the sweetest little thing ever, yelling and going all She-ra on me saying "F**k no! We're gonna finish this! We're finishing it now!"
Honestly, just seeing the complete 180 was the most awesome thing ever.

She ended up tying the game by rolling a 1. She was a bit miffed--it was obvious that she was going to win too it had gone to turn 6. The poor CSM player didn't have a prayer.

--------
For me as a player:
Destroying an entire group of terminators and their beefcake HQ unit with my lone Lord and a warscythe after two rounds of combat. The sweet, sweet tears made the perfect sauce to the epic win!

i had an excellent game on a tournament. I played Tau vs Chaos Space Marines. I wipe him out except ONE SINGLE TERMIE who's licking dirt in a forest. I shot him with aprox 6 railsguns, 6 plasma, 40 FW, 18 SMS and some more. He made every last save! EPIC

Hmm few different games of Epic Win/Epic Lose moments:

Playing MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) one of the characters had a belt of unseen, with 3 uses per day. It was very much like an invisibility item, however it only made 1 thing invisible. Being a warrior, with 2 swords, he stripped naked, and leapt into this gladitorial pit, with his two swords. He swung at one of the warriors, the attack breaking the invisiblity....and missed, leaving him standing naked with a half dozen suddenly aware opponents.

Playing Space Marines vs my friends newly purchased Dark Eldar, and another friend playing Blood Angels, I faced off both armies , one to my left, one to my right. The Dark Eldar player decided to go into reserves with his whole army, hoping to mop up one of us after we fought each other for a round.

Round 1, I had a Drop Pod with Lysander and Some Sternguard land right next to the BA parking lot of tanks. They blew it up while Landspeeders and Land Raider blew up a Whirlwind on the other side. With my drop pod so close, and his two tanks blown up, his parking lot was at a stand still. He kept his marines inside however to shoot at me with melta guns, rolling either 1-2 to hit me, or 1s to wound LOL. His Baal Predator flamed me good....but killed no one. By turn 2 I had 5 of his tanks destroyed.

The Dark Eldar player arrived in turns 2 and 3, and marched his force directly at my Land Rader, combat squad of marines, and a Predator. I managed to knock out his 2 Raiders, making them foot sloggers. With a Talos Scorpion thing and a squad of WYches led by Lillith closing down on me, I started to get worried, however his Talos Scorp managed to attack my predator with SEVEN attacks....and hit once LOL. He ripped off the turret, and the next round I hosed down his wyches and lillith without them swinging a weapon, and charged his talos scorpion with my Command Squad in the LR, killing it as well.

Finally, we were playing a Matrix style D20 game and our team was in dire straits. It turns out, one of them was working for the machines, and another was something not quite human, and we were in a severe gunfight. My character was the "Charisma Based Hero", the face man of the party, and pretty useless in a fight.

Trapped in a building, a huge firefight breaks out, and Agents close in, and two of us are trapped in an elevator as the undercover agent and mutant bust through the door fighting. Gunshots go off, hitting another party member, as the last remaining member makes a dash for a phone and a way out.

As the two grapple, I manage to slip out in the confusion, and get to another hard line calling our operator. Taking one for the team I decide to tell the operator that our party is comprimised, and to pull the plug on us, killing us all. The GM tells me that it is going to take a ridiculously high "charm" roll for me to convince the Operator to kill the people he has known forever as his team and friends. Using every ability I had to give me a bonus, I needed an 18 on d20 roll.....I rolled a 20.

The game ended in limbo, with everyone dying except the other guy that made it to a hardline. He got out of the matrix....and found himself staring at the operator who was shooting him in the chest. hehe. Good times.

I actually fielded Colonel Schaeffer and his Last Chancers.

*Pause* (I'll just let that sink in for all you guard players out there)

I was playing a friendly game, 2k, against a Tau player and I had some odd amount of points left over so I decided to take a squad of penal legionnaires. (To shorten this up I’m just going to follow the penal legion squad) It’s an objective game, dawn of war. I deploy the penal legion squad and scout them forward. They are booking it to the dead, left hand corner of the map, where they have to climb (run up the stairs) of a four story building. We decided that it would take 6” of movement to go up a flight of stairs because the Tau player placed one of his three objectives on the top, of the building…

So two turns later 6 of the penal legionnaires makes it to the building and then two turns later (with two turns of run rolls included) they make it to the top with the squad leader and a single penal legionnaire. The Tau player forgot to mention that since the building has windows he found no reason why someone couldn’t shoot into it, the guys inside would get a 4+ cover save but I digress. So on the roof is a tau transport, which is sitting on the roof access hatch (and the tau player states matter-o-factly that because of this I can’t gain access to the roof) two squads of fire warriors and his HQ battle suit with two mook battle suit body guards.

Top of Turn 5.
I ask if I the penal legion squad is within 3” of the objective (clearly they are) and the Tau player gets a little nervous. We slug it out for a little bit as he tries to push me off of some other objectives but those two penal legionnaires go undetected….until the tau transport decides to detach his gun drones and have them shoot at the penal legion squad. The make their 4+ cover save and so the Tau player decided he’s going to assault them. I ask if that’s even possible (because if so I’m going to assault his silly little transport) and he states that the gun drones will fly through the window and then assault them, taking a dangerous terrain check of course. I beat them (I know right?) and it’s the bottom of Turn 5. Blah blah blah the penal legion’s turn. “They are going to climb out the window and onto the roof.” I state. I roll my dangerous terrain and nobody’s hurt. I shoot the las pistol at the first fire warrior squad and wound! But they make their armour save >:C So I assault them. (Did I mention they are the rending kind of penal legion squad?) I rend twice and wound once and he makes his armour save and doesn’t hurt me. Moral test! He makes it. Turn 6? Oh yeah, turn 6. The assault phase happens and inflict one wound…. Which he doesn’t save…. And I sweep them! My Turn, I assault the other fire warrior squad, and Sweep them! Turn 7? Ah oh, yeah… turn 7. The tau transport fires and misses but the HQ battle suit squad? They unload and inflict 5 unsave-able wounds… unless you’re the type of guy who goes to ground. Three 6+ cover saves for the regular penal legionnaire and two for the custodian. The regular dies, but the custodian? Double 6’s! The tau player assault the custodian, who’s lying on the ground.

This is where the bad-assary steps it up a notch. All of you with weak constitutions might want to not read on.
The custodian stands up to face the Tau Commander and his two battle suit body guards.
“You cannot overcome the might that is Tau! We fight for the greater goo-“
*Cough*
“I’m Colonel Schaeffer, commander of the 13th Penal Legion. I’ve had my spine rebuilt after being crushed by a tank, my arm replaced after it was shot off by a plasma bolt and I’ve even had the Adeptus Mechanicus replace my eyes with these two icy-blue eyes. I’ve fought against the Vile Xenos Tyranids as they made planet fall, been at the front line of Armageddon and the heart of deserted Catachan Death Worlds. You’re foul heretical technology doesn’t scare me. May the Emperor show you mercy, because I most certainly will-“
At this point the Tau leader and his entourage attack and a brutal battle ensues. Schaeffer makes 3 armour saves then fights back. He hits three times, and rends twice! And wounds once. The Tau player fails his armour save and then…. It’s leadership time.

I would like to say that I took that victory with honor. That on that day, if only for a brief, fleeting moment there was peace… but instead I exploded with joy running around hollering and whooping like a manic telling everyone in the gaming store what had just happened. And as for Colonel Schaeffer? Well he got a nice little paint job and has been fielded ever since.

My friends had a good one a few weeks ago:
Dark eldar vs Termagant/Tervigon spam Tyranids.

Tyranids wiped the floor with the Dark Eldar in the first few turns, and it looked like it would be a quick game. Then lilith got in combat with termagants. She managed to kill all but a couple in her turn, so she was locked in the Tyranid turn and safe, she then finished off the squad and moved to the next one. 4 more times. She killed over 120 termagants and won the game for the Dark Eldar.
