View Full Version : Scythes test mini

Just a lil something I rustled up the other day as a test mini, its still wip as I need to finish the base and do the shoulder and weapon icons. Fairly basic as intended for bulk army painting, haven't painted any power armour for myself in about six years so was kinda fun. So vent your SM based fury lol

Beautiful!

The only niggling thing that bugs me is how the feet aren't firmly planted on the ground, and because of that there's very little impression of weight. But it's really just a pet peeve of mine. :o

if you can make an army like this....... you can have 2500 internetz :P

harrybuttwhisker
05-09-2010, 03:25 AM
internes X point value? wtf?

as for the feet its the pointy out feet that makes it look worse as does the angle looking down at it on a table it looks ok. Thats the peril of making your own bases, getting sizes right.

The plan is to do a full army its just working out what to put in and what I want to paint

How have you gone about painting these,I tried painting an army of scythes a long time ago by undercoating/painting everything seperately before building them white undercoat for the yellow areas ,black for the black obviously the whole thing took absolutely ages so I shelved them, any advice might see them re-surface.

harrybuttwhisker
06-20-2010, 09:33 AM
spray whole model black

basecoat - iyanden darksun
first shade - graveyard earth
second shade - scorched brown
first highlight - 50:50 iyanden:vallejo game colour golden yellow
second highlight - vgc golden yellow
third highlight - 60:40 vallejo model colour ivory:vgc golden yellow
glaze - 50:50 red:yellow ink

then hit with dullcoat

shading is done with thin washes working back into the recesses treating the basecoat as a midtone. You can replace the vallejo colours with golden yellow and bleached bone i just prefer the slightly different tones the vallejo colours have. Inks are old school GW inks. Graveyard can be swapped for khemri brown as well as they are mostly interchangeable.

Any other questions and ill do what i can to help

Some work in progress scouts this time once agin no insignia to the end and they need bases. I still to need to figure out how im going to do my camo cloaks as first attempt was **** lol Also need to fix things like the wonky eyes and the spot on the power cable as they become really obvious in big pictures but missed before.

So gonna try and finish these two this week and start two more soon.

I don't know if I'm the biggest fan of the colour scheme as it reminds me a lot of bees. >.>

Nonetheless, there's no doubt it's a very tidy, crisp paint job where the colours really pop. Not only that, but it's definitely a unique scheme and so for those reasons, I quite like them. :)

Time for a little update, photos are crap due to taking on window sill rather than in a light tent. Managed to get two more scats ready for there camo cloaks as well as a rocket dude and my counts as telion conversion for fluff reasons he's in power armour.

Well did a lil more work on the other two scouts but photos are even worse lol so instead I shall treat you to a look inside the rhino my tactical squad will be trucking around in.

harrybuttwhisker
07-07-2010, 02:26 AM
More progress, got these two finished to the tidying up stage so that just leaves three camo cloaks to paint for this squad and the basing to do before I can concentrate on the rhino.

Now I can concentrate more on my Rhino.

harrybuttwhisker

Started cracking on with my stand in for a thunderfire, which is a bit of side project I use to fill time when not painting. Instead of putting together the *naughty word* of a kit which is the GW kit im making a mole mortar yay. The following being what the tiny old ones look like.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/gallery_squats_mole-mortars.jpg

So I have to make it bigger, newer and shinier and this is how far i've gotten.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0473.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0472.jpg

still needs a bipod, ammo feed/drum and a breech. It will also be getting a fancy base, this is the prototype so far so things may change (or go in bin lol) a lot.

harrybuttwhisker
07-25-2010, 03:08 PM
well not really happy with where i've gotten to freehanding turned out nigh impossible after adding the base as i coudnt keep it still, just about managed the tactical marking but the scythe logo was beyond me. Need to the blend the transfers into the paint more too, really obvious in the photos. But the base has gone through puberty and is now hairy so have reached a point were not really happy im probably gonna call it a day to move onto the next thing. Heres how it looks for now.

so next its onto the other five tactical marines, three with boltguns, one mulit-melta and a powerfist, combi-flamer wielding sergeant.

...Need to the blend the transfers into the paint more too, really obvious in the photos...

It's a bit of a pain, but I got rid of decal marks with this process: (paint), apply gloss varnish, then decal, then decal solvent, then gloss varnish (at this point I do the whole thing for weathering stage one), (more painting, weathering, varnish etc), matt or semigloss enamel varnish. Between the decal solvent and the last coat of enamel it seems to melt the clear into the gloss varnish.

@shadow queen i've been asked about the combi-weapon on other forums so when I do my next one i'll be taking and posting photos but it's real simple.

@gwensdad dont be ashamed of hating ultramarines, be ashamed of supporting the colts lol

harrybuttwhisker
08-21-2010, 10:55 AM
Ok here goes, first of all you will need tools

1)Clippers
2)Knife
3)Superglue
4)Pinvice
5)1mm drill bits

The bits you will need are

1)space marine commander plastic boltgun-melta combi weapon
2)blood angel death company handflamer

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0510.jpg

Step 1 - chopping mercilessly

At this stage you can use clippers to roughly remove areas we dont need such as the melta gun barrel and the main body of the handflamer til you have something looking roughly like this.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0512.jpg

this is the ideal time to drill out the bareels using a pinvice as if you do it later in there new positions they will probably snap off.

Step 2 - SHAVE IT!

being very careful, knives can be sharp, we gently slice the boltgun barrel away trying not to distort it shape before cleaning up the front of the bolter body so it is nice and smooth mmmm. Then we also carefully pare away the boby of the handflamer leaving only the barrel and hose assembly so we end up with something like this.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0513.jpg

Stage 3 - Getting Sticky

simply stick the barrels in the new positions so it looks a bit like this and hey presto we are done.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0514.jpg

Hope that helps.

11-26-2010, 10:51 PM

harrybuttwhisker
11-27-2010, 05:05 AM
@tynskel it's arttached at two pints via the landing skid thing, its been internally reinforced with steel rod through it all up into the body so the metal carries the weight rather than the plastic. It also comes apart for transport so means it doesn't have to be uber reinforced. the base is also full of steel shot so no chance of it overbalancing.

@red widow I might be tempted once I get the crew finished.

Everything looks great! :D

The Land Speeder Storm is giving me some inspiration. Definitly might go buy one soon!
How do you like the LS Storm kit?
I've heard good things but have never seen one or the components in person.

@shadow queen don't worry I test fitted him and with a lil jiggle he pops in just fine

@thorson it's a really good kit, goes together spot on, loads of extras and tonnes of detail.

awesome. If you have pictures, it'd be cool if you posted how you made the reenforcement of the land speeder with the Rods. How to shots can be just as cool as the finished product!

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos but essential it involves cutting away the corners on the runner thing and drilling a hole through the entire length of each straight bit, threading steel wire through it then building the corners back up with modelling putty.

Tedious but worth it.

Well managed to get this puppy sorted to my usual stopping point of it just needing to have its insignia done and any touching taken up taken care off. So without further ado, brought to you in glorious technicolour, some pretty pictures.

Do you have IA Vol 2 as there is a Scythes Vidicator in there.

And try masking tape so you dont get splash over.

I own it but don't think I've ever read it lol anything bordering black I just play messy as easy to cut back in, I only mask for colour on colour

More yellow you say?

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/caf3035c.png

So the yellow is nearly done, after that it's fairly quick to paint in the black areas and a couple of the non-metallic details ready for a quick hit of dullcote to kill the shine then onto the metal.

Also just put in an order for some MK V armour and accompanying weapons to mix in with some bits from sever in loths retinue to make the sternguard to ride in this. Once the turn up and I start covering myself in glue I will get some pics up.

Not a great update but trying to make sure I get on with this project.

Great looking bunch of models. Really love the way you've done the combi-flamer! Had to take screenshots and mail it to some of my buddies at work! Can't wait to see more of your stuff when you get more completed.

harrybuttwhisker

@rustbucket feel free to thieve whichever ideas take your fancy

Well i've got some progress to report that isn't just yellow, though I have tidied up its borders with the black as seen here.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0664.jpg

I've also worked through getting the edge highlights on the black sorted.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0666.jpg

Also painted up the eagle on the front and worked up the cupola vision block lenses.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0665.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0667.jpg

So just need to tidy the lenses up, paint in the headlights and pop on some transfers/insignia, then its finally dullcote time. All that will be left after that is the metallics and making a crazy base for it.

Well i've been away due to an awful broadband connection that has hindered my ability to upload photos.

THANKS BT

So im gonna try and get caught up a bit on what i've been doing for my scythes and my other distractions. First of all some progress on my razorback, got the metals done and had a general tidy up leaving it ready for squad insignia markings.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0678.jpg

I've also got the base knocked up ready to spray.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0677.jpg

Also being doing a lot of building for this army including my first squad of sternguard, nearly ready for priming.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0685.jpg

Close up photos really show up mould lines i've missed oops.

I've also started building vehicles for a charcharadon army i'll be starting soon. First up my converted redeemer from the fancy FW kit.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0680.jpg

this still has some serious gaps to fill before I can crack on with it.

harrybuttwhisker

Ruddy image limit.

Also the rest of the tracked vehicles that will be in the army.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0683.jpg

Im planning on trying out my super cheap airbrush compressor combo I bought (for only £60 odd quid) on the these as well as some heavy weathering.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0684.jpg

The bargain airbrush I bought, hopefully ok for a bit of basecoating :-s

So that were im up to for now, I wont post the photos of the other scythe stuff i've built as you can only put up with seeing so much grey plastic. Soon as that razorback is finished expect to see me painting up severin loth (FW) as my librarian.

There will be more photos on my blog shortly.

Well last night I managed to slap some blue paint onto my Sevrin Loth model to be used as my scythes librarian.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0694.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0695.jpg

Difficult to tell how happy I am with the blue on the helmet and chest plate. I guess i'll know more when I add some other colours.

harrybuttwhisker
03-01-2011, 06:42 AM
Time for more blue, got it nearly all done barring one more leg to go. I'll probably go back and re-work some of the transitions. Always found blue a bit iffy to paint so on one hand reasonably pleased but also can see were I would have liked to have done better. I'm looking forward to getting to work on the details, anyway its piccy time.

Librarians are supposed to wear the blue so they are easily identifiable due to them being a "moral threat" in the eyes of the imperium

harrybuttwhisker
03-05-2011, 11:07 AM
Well it's time for a bit more blue and yellow.

This is going so slowly but I thought I would try and keep every one up to date.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0700.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0701.jpg

Nothing else to see here move along to my razorback.

Well its basically finished barring the usual addition at some point of the scythes logo and a lil tidy up where a transfer chipped away (god knows what I'm doing wrong?). It's also mounted up on the now finished scenic base.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0704.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/noneedforaname_album/DSCF0705.jpg

Well thats another model out the way, I'm going to concentrate on finishing my librarian before I move onto painting anything else for my Scythes but will use the time to finish assembly on a couple of models and perhaps crack on with the prep for my charcharadons (gap filling sucks). Though I hope to get started on painting my first unit of sternguard next.

just an little thing i noticed about the liby he has 3 rings on his leg: 1 spiked metal and 1 parchment: but youve made them all metal!

harrybuttwhisker

so I thought I had finished this, entered it in the comp at the forgeworld open day then took these photos and realised I hadn't finished the book on the banner pole. Oops! Still not happy with the chest eagle either.

Also changed the weapon as couldnt get the force axe looking right, so used the grey knight force staff thingy, this was a completely original conversion, if some guy called george McStocker says he came up with it he's a liar ;-p plus it's all his fault I didn't win the competition lol

spray whole model black

basecoat - iyanden darksun
first shade - graveyard earth
second shade - scorched brown
first highlight - 50:50 iyanden:vallejo game colour golden yellow
second highlight - vgc golden yellow
third highlight - 60:40 vallejo model colour ivory:vgc golden yellow
glaze - 50:50 red:yellow ink

then hit with dullcoat

shading is done with thin washes working back into the recesses treating the basecoat as a midtone.

May I ask for a more detailed breakdown of your Yellow process? Maybe with pictures to define each stage. I know that's a lot to ask. Your yellow technique I amazing. I love the depth you've created and yellow is a color I've never done well. I wish to take my next army and make it yellow, but fear a flat basic color.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
