For a long time, I have been wanting to paint up an army to look like it could have come from the Grid from Tron. For those who aren't familiar with Tron, it is a Sci-fi cult classic movie from the early 80s, with a 2010 sequel. Both films are set within computer systems and have a very distinctive look. Just google image it to get an idea of it.

Basically, I have an unpainted Tau army and I want to paint it up in this style. The problem is that I have always been more a gamer than a painter, never really taking pride in the look of my army until now. So I know next to nothing about the technique of painting. So if someone could possibly give some guidance as to what paints and techniques I should use, I would be grateful. To keep things simple, I plan to stick with GW paints and washes unless absolutely necessary.

Basically, I want some models to have a black base and some to have a white base, each with a light blue lightsaber-style effect in the crevices. Here are some examples of what I am thinking:

This looks simple enough, but I am not sure how to get the luminescent effect in the crevices. It looks like white in the crevices and then progressively lighter blue highlights blended into the black. But if anyone can give me some other insights that would be grand. And then I would like to paint up some other models with a white base instead of black, to resemble the original Tron look. One thing I am unsure about is whether I should just keep a plain black undercoat/basecoat, or build up grey highlights to give it the illusion of rubbery shine, a la Quorra's catsuit (<3).

Many thanks in advance.

I've done some things in a Tron scheme a while back so this might help:

For the shiny catsuit look I just used gloss varshish, helluva lot easier and looks great imo.

Thanks, I like the idea of gloss varnish over the black basecoat.

In terms of what to do for the basecoat, is it acceptable to just stick with the Imperial Primer undercoat? Or should I give it a base layer of Abaddon Black over the top? Is there any sense in doing a black basecoat over a black undercoat? Presumably they are slightly different blacks.

I used a layer of Abaddon Black over the primer as it's a little glossier than the primer.

And what would you recommend for the "glowy", lightsaber effect in the crevices and on the edges?

Just have a look at the second link I posted above, just use blues instead of reds and oranges.
