View Full Version : Open Da Krate!

Mr Mystery

Wot is it? We don't know! (www.openthekrate.com)

Seriously. Found a flier for this in my Warhammerfest bag, and naturally signed up.

Registration email promises a new branch to the 40k community and an exciting mobile experience??

Only way to find out is for people to sign up!

Helps if I use the right URL....

This is another new thing they where apparently pushing at Dreamhack today, again thinking more info will become available tomorrow at Warhammerfest.

GW Loot Crate equivalent?

Mr Mystery
05-15-2016, 03:34 AM
Quite possible - but no idea!

We need people to sign up so we can finds out.

GW Loot Crate equivalent?

God I hope it doesn't include Funko Pop Vinyls like ever other damned loot crate seems too.

Mr Mystery
05-15-2016, 11:20 AM
Never got the interest in those. Sure, I'll buy them for friends as presents - they're pretty well positioned for that in terms of price and styling.

But other than Frank'n'Furter, who is here for that very purpose, Mystery Towers is devoid of such things

CoffeeGrunt

I don't like the style of Pops, but one of my friends is obsessed. She has dozens of them.

Psychosplodge
05-16-2016, 01:50 AM
I wish GW would get off this mobile obsession

I have far too many Pops. But a Terminator, sister of battle, and a space marine would be nice additions.

I don't even own a smartphone, just a basic cellphone. I also have no idea wtf a funko pop vinyl is, it sounds like some kind of collectable music record to me. I feel so out of touch.

Wow. They're really getting into the subscription service thing. Don't they already have two for Black Library, and the deal with the one publishing group that puts out spiffed-up versions of their books? And now basically a loot crate?

The "get X number of sign ups to reveal info" is a trick to get emails to market to. Not got anything against that, we do tricks like that, too. Recognizing it makes it a little harder for me to sign up with things like that (not just GW, with anyone). Hey, at least the marketing team there is learning new (old) tricks. I'll watch to see the news. Even if they don't hit the goal, they'll tell us. You don't spend that much on a new product line (hey, a loot crate is still a product!) and then decide to scrap it because you couldn't get enough emails, especially as right now it relies on people having been at a localized event in a single country and them spreading word of mouth (though I suspect it'll be on their FB pages soon enough).

CoffeeGrunt
05-17-2016, 02:22 AM
If they don't release it to FB, it'll be an interesting experiment to see how far Word of Mouth gets them, though. They can track number of Hits and number of Email Signups over time to see how it propagates.

Mr Mystery
05-17-2016, 02:25 AM
Hmm...about halfway there.

Which is interesting....because on Saturday when I first signed up, it was about a quarter of the way there.

Methinks the counter is in fact a timer.....but still, sign up anyways, just in case.

Mr Mystery
05-17-2016, 03:17 AM
Now, I saw somewhere that Warhammer World are, for this weekend only, selling a selection of classic Blood Bowl Star Players, including Rasta Tailspike, Lewdgrip Whiparm and Frank'n'Stein....

Which got me thinking....if this is a Loot Krate, could it include short runs of old, collectors style models? Pretty sure I'd sign up for that, me.

Well, I say somewhere. I should say the WW Facebook page.

It depends on whether GW even have the old stuff in moulds or stock. Might be a half-decent way to justify them, though. Get a bunch of monthly subscriptions so you've got a guaranteed number of buyers each month, and every month you recommission a mould from a master to make models for them, making a little money in the process.

Pad it out with a fluff pamphlet and some other, random stuff and there you go. I personally don't rate the Loot Crate, but it'd possibly be interesting for others.

Mr Mystery
05-17-2016, 03:23 AM
Yup.

Even if it's intended as an attention grabbing 'good will' type box thing, if it's subscription based it could be hard to lose money on, even if it's not necessarily profitable for them.

Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see.

It might not even be a Loot Crate equivalent. Seems quite possible, but we just don't know owt beyond the name.

A nice T-shirt (The only reason that loot crate interests me), older model (plastic, metal, or heck failcast), a pot of paint or brush, a code to an extra secret how-to paint on line, an conversion how to (with parts list), random bits, a nice cup for tea/ paint water. The list could be unlimited, and I could see a goodly number of people signing up, if the quality was there and stayed high.

I just signed up for it. It piqued my interest...

Anyway, it says 'git the ekklusiv gear' which to me can only mean that it is a loot crate.

I like the little bits and bobs they give out when you order stuff from the GW store, so this could be worth a little look in. As long as it's not priced out the wazoo!

If this thing comes with ekklusiv minis, I reckon it'll go off like a frog in a sock.

Kirsten

well I doubt titans are coming any time soon. I just don't really do anything with 'collectors edition' type stuff, or the badges GW sends out etc. I would buy specific GW things like t shirts if I knew what I was getting, but I wouldn't subscribe to a box of random things

Fair enough. A lot of times these things will get repeat info, but hey, it's those fresh emails that are the real treat. And if you can touch the same customer multiple times and they're okay with it, that's all good, too. (GW can pull that off because the emails are being sent from different names - IIRC, I get emails from Games Workshop, Warhammer Digital, and Black Library at least - so it's not as bad as someone getting three emails in a week from the same name.)

Is that the standard imperial shipping container? I'd have expected them to be bigger.

Did anyone see that GW wizard with submachinegun NIB on ebay?

Film the opening, and then melting down of the model.

BEHOLD THE LAMENTATION OF THE NERDS.

Definitely melt it down.

For the same reason one of my dreams is to buy lots of very rare, MISB Grade A Star Wars merchandise....and then film the opening of the boxes, and the playing with of the toys.

Mwahahahahahaahahahahahaha!

one of my favourite tv moments is when James May is at a model train auction. he buys a BNIB train that all the collectors desperately want. then he goes to the desk to pick it up, rips open the packaging, throws it away, and walks off with the train to put it on his track and play with.

Sure, but it doesn't hurt to try to comb for more addresses. They're gold to a marketing team. Also, a lot of times you'll have the wrong email for someone, so they won't actually be getting your emails.

I like these. Nice, simple terrain. Always good to have more stuff to build up a battlefield. Probably will be too expensive to do something like a shipping dock (because you'd need a LOT of them), but that'd be a cool setup for a fight.

Hmmm I'm looking at these and seeing that you could easily make Zone Mortalis/Space Hulk corridor sections out of those containers. Liking that there will finally be a decent souce of fuel cans and crates for a sensible price (with plenty of both in the kit).

Hoping the crate walls aren't massively thick, for ease of breaking them open etc.

Man, I need to sort out boards this year!

Assuming the bar is actually tied to email signups, sure. It's been almost a month, either they got way fewer signups than they expected and that's why it's taking so long, or there's been a set date the entire time.

Either way, they're clearly going to announce whatever this is at some point, regardless of emails. If it is a game(I also recall someone somewhere saying they'd tracked it down to a game developer, though whois is saying the registrant is a Domains By Proxy) then E3 makes some sense. Guess we'll either find out next week or just keep waiting.
