Is the 3rd edition Assassins codex still the most current rules, or are there newer rules in another book?

The assassins are currently found in the Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters codices.

Codex: Assassins is outdated.

You can find their current rules in either the DH or WH codices, though they now have the restriction of only being able to be taken when either an Inquisitor or Inquisitor Lord is present in the force.

fluff wise, it really doesn't make sense- a job for the assassin is so dangerous, an inquisitor would probably not be at the location of the assassination attempt....

However, mechanically, it does make sense-- The old Assassin dex allowed any imperial army to spare ~100 points and a FOC slot to get an assassin. This was easy to do for any army and made assassins be everywhere, sanctioned all the time.

With the DH and WH rules, any imperial army outside DH and WH now has to dedicate 2 FOC slots and 200+ points to get an assassin. This is much more difficult to design an army that both has the assassin and is consistently effective. A HQ and ELITES slot is an expensive price to pay.

DH and WH have a high price, however it is easier to afford. You can take 2 ELITE slots and spend 20-40 points on an inquisitor, bringing the package to 120-150 points. Still leaving an extra HQ slot open.
