View Full Version : Did I do well?

I fought a 1250-point battle this past weekend against the older brother of a guy that I introduced to the game. Older brother had just whaled on a Tau player at 1000 points with a Knight Crusader and a bunch of Skitarii, but the Tau player was 14 and not very experienced. He made some mistakes that I thought I could improve on, so I offered to play Older Brother in a match.

Standard short sides deployment, 6 objectives, no night fighting. My army list was the broken stupid thing I use that gets panned repeatedly. A 1st company formation with an Armored Shield formation and an allied Space Marines detachment. It looked like this:

5 sternguard with 2 Hvy bolters and 3 Storm bolters
5 Vanguard vets with power axe, power axe, power sword, 2x lightning claws and 2x power mauls
5 terminators with an assault cannon
5 terminators with a heavy flamer

Leman Russ Battle Cannon with lascannon and sponson heavy flamers
Veteran squad with 2 grenade launchers and a plasma gun and a commissar
another veteran squad with 2 plasma guns and a grenade launcher (not strictly legal according to the formation, which I informed Older Brother of, and he didn't complain)

Space Marine librarian with Primarchs Wrath and a Force Lance
5 Space Marine scouts with bolt pistols and close combat weapons

I thought I would end up facing the Crusader and skitarii again, so when Older Brother plonked down TWO Imperial Knights, I thought it was all over. He also got the first turn, despite my attempt to seize initiative.

First turn, he trudged towards me with the Crusader and the Gallant (that's the all-melee Knight, right?) and shot the crap out of one of the veteran squads. He tried to shoot the Leman Russ (it's name is Sheila's Fury, and she's a *****) but had no effect. In my turn I shot back and did absolutely nothing.

Turn two he shot the crap out of the one veteran squad some more, leaving just two surviving, with the Librarian, who had been attached to them. He shot up the scouts and killed two of them, and shot the Armored Shield formation and Sheila some more, killing about half of the infantry there. In my turn, I managed to get both terminator squads and my vanguard vets in (all had been in deep strike reserve) and put them behind his knights, with the vanguard vets behind his 10-man skitarii unit (the ones with radium rifles, I think. Not rangers). I used the librarian to Psychic scream his Skitarii Infiltrators and got some GREAT rolls, killing off four of them, then the AC termies and the scouts, AND the sternguard vets fired on them, cutting that unit of infiltrators from 9 down to 1 with only a single wound left. I forgot to charge them, though. :( I think I also took a hull point off the Crusader this turn.

In Turn 3, he charged the AC termies with his Crusader, after shooting them up and killing one. His Gallant ran toward Sheila (there was pretty much nothing I could do to stop that), and his Skitarii Rangers and whatevers killed off the Vanguard Vets before they did anything. The Crusader was unable to kill any of my termies in close combat, and the Gallant ended up locked with the infantry squad that was in front of Sheila and failed to kill them with its main weapon, but it stomped them all to goo at the end of the round. I took at least 2 hull points off the Crusader this turn with the terminators, I think. The Heavy flamer hosed the rangers and then the terminators charged and finished them off in close combat.

In turn 4 he broke contact with the Crusader and fired at Sheila, I think? At some point a template scattered and killed two of the Sternguard. After shooting the AC terminators down to 2 guys, he charged Sheila with the Gallant and ripped her to pieces, then threw her shattered hulk at the Sternguard, but missed. At the end of his portion of Turn 4, he had to leave, and wanted to concede, but I told him he would probably have won with another turn. Looking back, I see that I forgot when he killed off the scouts. When he resigned, I had only the librarian, the two terminator squads, and 3 of the 5 sternguards left. Of course, I had two vets on one objective, the librarian on another, 3 termies on a third, and the sternguard holding a fourth, while he wasn't in range of any. At the end I had wiped out 2/3rds of his infantry units, his Crusader was down to 2HP and his Gallant was down by 1.

I think turn 5 he would have wiped me out. But my question is, did I do okay based on what I had available?

Personally, having had years of this hobby, I'd have packed up and walked off if someone tried the "surprise double knights", life is too short to play against people like that.

It turns out that the guy is very relaxed and not at all a jerk about it. He just started playing last summer (his brother is one of the college students I got started playing last summer, and the fever spreads quickly you know) and I think he just went straight for what was most powerful. I don't think he thinks about it in terms of crushing other people, or if so, he's the most polite jerk I've ever played against. Frankly, I'd rather lose to his 2 knights again than my own sons MegaNobz Ork force... that boy is insufferable.
