Games Workshop is releasing a new version of the 2000 classic Lost Patrol with updated components and rules. It arrives in stores on June 17.

The new game is a two-player game with one side taking on the roles of Space Marine Scouts hunted by the other player controlling a group of fearsome alien Genestealers. Played out on a dynamic, tile-based board, the squad of Marines must navigate a jungle that moves and changes as they travel the board. The game has updated rules from the original 2000 game and is just as fast-paced as the original, playing in about 30 minutes.

Game Workshop's announcement of the new game makes it clear there are a few small differences from the original, designed by Jake Thornton (DreadBall, Mars Attacks: The Miniatures Game, Deadzone). The new version includes 5 Space Marine Scouts, 12 Genestealers, 6 Infestations, 30 Map tiles, 3 Dice, and the rules. The figures are unpainted and assembly may be required. MSRP is $60.00.

2000? I don't remember that at all

Neither do I. Which is surprising as I tend to be bit of a "know it all" when it comes to these things 😊

I don't remember it either. Modelwise it sounds pretty boring and uninteresting to me, but maybe the game is good (the guy that wrote it has a good record)

Before I read the article the name made me think of a bunch of heavily battle damaged marines fighting against some unknown/unamed xenos in some equally unknown corner of the galaxy. I kinda want to do that now..

Seems pretty inexpensive. Probably not aimed at more established hobbyists.

Yeah, $60 is cheap for a modern GW boxed game. Maybe it's another attempt to get stuff in toy stores and stuff like they want to do with that other stuff we've seen.

I have a dim recollection of it being on the shelves, and I'm sure there was a second game in a similar theme.

In short they were modern equivalents of the Trolls games - simple sets for kids to get gaming with.

I don't recall playing it, or indeed selling any.

Never heard of this, checked over on Jake's blog (he's a good games designer, shame he's thrown his lot in with a garbage company that squander his rules) says it was a limited release minigame (he's also got an FAQ and some extra rules for Scout Snipers for this game)

Don't think he'll have had much to say on this remake though

weird, I was buying every white dwarf at the time, seem to have missed it as does everyone else. scouts vs lictor would be more interesting.

I remember things like Ultramarines, Mighty warriors and Kerunch which were stripped down versions of the main systems. May be they're trying somthing similar?

Here's the 2000 rules (http://www.strony.toya.net.pl/~rycop/schowek/LostPatrol.pdf).

https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic380828_md.jpg

The original was insanely unbalanced against the scouts - even moreso than Space Hulk against the marines. The designer has said this is intentional (https://quirkworthy.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/lost-patrol-faq-v02.pdf).

I know right? I normally have zero interest in orks but that sounds too awesome. I kinda imagine a grimdark version of super mario kart. How dare they not release that!

Well its a change from Marines vs Marines Wot May Or May Not Be Spiky.

Wouldn't that just be a tile-based version of Gorkamorka?

possibly, or rolling road style

Competitive price point, bringing back an old hat to do the rules... if they get it into hobby, toy, and/or other shops, that'll be a good combination there. It's the kind of product that'd work to get people a taste at an affordable price point.

Definitely looks like the old/current scouts and genestealer sprues to me, albeit in coloured plastic.

I find it interesting the front cover bangles aren't rocking the whole gothic emo-vampire vibe.

Probably the space vampire sub-plot is wasted on little timmah or they don't want to scare the parents?

Red plastic for the BA and Purple for the Stealers. Looks like that will be a thing. With the price and that it must be very much an entry product.

According to his blog, Jake Thornton wasn't aware this was being released and has had no input on this version, so they're not bringing him back

I bet his contract in 2000 didn't give him royalties either...

Odd.

Yeah GW will have owned anything he made/wrote for them whilst he worked for them. He still created it though.

Almost certainly entry product. But that's good. More entry products will help bring more exposure, which adds more custo-* er, players. And that makes everyone happy!

Yep I agree. I also think you were talking sense on the frontpage about this.

I don't remember ever seeing lost patrol before, had a sub to WD in those days as well. Was it tied in to the release of the "new" metal scouts back then? If it was an early online only thing I could have easily missed it that way.

Formula Ork was that the battle report in a WD where they raced round an oval shooting at each other in light armoured vehicles? Did someone take a vyper? but most were orks?

Kirsten

used plastic scout sprues they said, from space crusade or something.

there was a racing game, but not Formula Waaagh that they evidently worked on but never released. they did a lot of little WD games like bar room brawl and dark eldar vs eldar jetbike pursuit and stuff. but they seem to have made or started making a number of board games that never actually got released.

Psychosplodge
03-18-2016, 03:46 AM
Yeah I remember the pursuit one with the scenery rolling down the board, but I remember the one I was thinking of was towards the end of gorkamorka. not a proper release though it would be cool, especially now there's more small vehicles about like the tauros and pirahna and the harlequin thing.

Bommerz o'er the sulfer riva (or however they orkified it) was great fun, wish I'd picked a copy up instead of just playing it instore.

Kirsten

it was a great game, needs a re-release. oooh ooooh! with the plastic kits we have now, we could do a 40k version :D

No, not until they replace the bloody awful plastic hydra with the far superior FW one.

Don't hold your breath. it took long enough to get this version made:rolleyes:

I know, but they could have literally just took the FW one and made it plastic.

Nope, I'm afraid not, in order to justify the costs it had to be done the way it was, if it had needed more frames, or more design time it would have never happened when it did.

I'll agree it's not ideal, or as nice as the FW model, but at least it became easily available to everyone.

Psychosplodge
03-22-2016, 06:19 AM
But its so ugly. They could have at least left the FW available to buy instead.
