ok so I recently found these guys on thewarstore.com, the models look great and are cheap (address below)

http://www.thewarstore.com/product53689.html

now the actual question, how do you guys think these guys look with the pig iron heavy trooper heads ( address below)?

http://www.thewarstore.com/product29992.html

or should I just keep the original heads? What kind of alternative models, or simple conversions, do you guys suggest to make guard cheaper?

any and all opinions welcome

Wow! Those look pretty cool. If you order some be sure and let us know what they look like. I think I would leave those heads....they look pretty decent to me.

I'm thinking of just selling the IG army I've got right now, the infantry and walkers anyway, and just starting over, I just don't like the cadian models that much.

I've been considering converting the hell out of a couple of these to make my sentinels

The sprues look pretty sweet, I might get them and the zombie deal for some kill team fun.

and i've gotta admit that when i saw the fact that 90 of them is $75, i may very well have had to change my pants. I also noticed that there are shotguns, flamers, and grenade launchers in the box

all my horde IG players give a HOOAAH

uh... hooaah! :-D

Time to dump the cadians that are part of my force and supplement my Vost/SteelLegion with some of these dudes.

yeah, if no one can tell i'm one of those guys who actually has souvenir service caps from around the world..., and wears them to the gaming store

but aside from how little sex I get, anyone got an alternative model, or conversion for a chimera? I'm trying to find something that looks a little more futuristic, or another idea is appropriate size modern day apc models?

I too on occasion wear this one East German (post WW2) hat that I call Command Hat for apoc games.

But those great coat guys.... I think I have some great Storm Troopers or Vets.

for the purposes of how i'm gonna re-build my army, i think i'm gonna use kaskrins for storm troopers still, but green stuff on some skirting to make them look a little more in line

I bought 60 of those particular heads for my Valhallan Conscripts :).

A few notes on them:

- Scrub them very well with dish detergent and be careful handling them, and with the leftover sprue/pieces, they are lead.
- The seams clean up very easy, and the corners are sharp, so highlighting will work very well on them.
- They don't fit perfectly on there, you actually need to cut a bit of the collar on your guard model away to get the right fit.
- It seemed like I needed more glue than I expected for it, and it still took a couple of times to get them to attach and stay.
- They look slightly large when you initially put them onto the base model without arms. I believe once painted it will look right.
They are beauties. If I everbother to get around to working on my guard again I am looking forward to seeing them finished.
- Primer seemed to go on them smoothly, and paint stayed on them well.

Just a few pointers that I encountered from working with them. I will gladly order pig iron products again, as they have some great stuff. Good luck!:)

Armorcast makes this thing, plus a version with interchangable weapons. And I saw the Beasts of War vid on the Greatcoat troopers and I ordered 3 boxes. The sprue comes with several head options, check it out before you order any extra heads for these guys.

I've seen this apc on the site but never in person, can anyone say the quality in person, cause it looks kinda low detail in the picture.

thanks for the advice on the heads

thanks for the advice on the pig iron, I'm a materials major so the reason why you have all of those good properties, ie. easy to paint, holds washes and such, is because of the lead thats why lead was used for modeling up until when pewter was made scalable to the needs of the modeling industry in, I wanna say the late 70s?

the glue problem is probably caused by the fact that lead is a very soft metal, and picks up skin oil very easily. No joke use gloves when you paint lead, you avoid having sweet food, from the lead, and the oils from your hands don't get in the way of the paint.

And just because I'm in a ranty kinda mood, lead corrodes quickly, but slower than pewter. I keep seeing people with multiple year old pewter and lead models which are corroded to hell. If you see corrosion on a model you have to sand, or scrape or file, it off before you paint, the paint will actually stay on that way

Here's some pics, hope they show some detail. It's actually pretty well detailed, down to the rivets. Stowage and toolboxes already there. 5 peices, hull, 2 tracks and 2 guns. I.ve been using mine to experiment with Forgeworlds weathering powders.

I love the mode, for relative realism, but I get the feeling i'd get flack for fielding that as a chimera ( firing ports, wrong weapons and what-not) is it hard to work with the resin to get the conversion you want?

on top of that, how would someone out there mod one of those to get something that looks like a chimera, seems like a lot of work

Thanks for the pics, I like the weathering

The yellow resin Armorcast uses is pretty easy to work with, it drills, cuts and sands beautifully. Just wear a mask if you sand or file it, the polyester dust gets everywhere. And like with all resins, scrub the hell out of it with Dawn or Softscrub. Also with armorcast stuff, spray lightly with multiple coats. It will look like crap at first, but the next 2 or 3 coats will smooth out.

As far as converting, I would replace the top hatch with a turret of some sort, maybe the sponson turrets from a Baneblade kit, their boxy look might fit the look of the vehicle. As for the front bubble guns, make one your hull mounted weapon and the other one a searchlight. As for firing ports, just say they pop out of the top using the door for cover. Hope this helps.

If you want something drool-worthy, check this out, from Micro Art in Poland:

http://microartstudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=281

Pair it with some of their Iron Brotherhood models, and we're in business for a ridiculous AdMech Army. Not sure if it's anything like what you really want, Zealotic, but it's just so fricking sweet it needed to be mentioned.

I love those models, the transports are great work
I would just buy these guys but I'm quite broke, so I'll go for pretty good cheap models as opposed to masterfully done wallet breakers.

I love the foot troops though, they scream of renegade guard

ok so I think I've got my shopping list

foot soldiers
5 boxes of shock troopers from wargames factory- meaning 90 models
http://www.thewarstore.com/product53690.html

accessories
a couple of weapon packs from reaper
http://www.thewarstore.com/product42179.html (2or3)
plasma and melta supplied by my bits box

ogryn counts as (cause these guys are gonna be too fun to deal with)
http://www.thewarstore.com/product52208.html- for the grunts (5)
http://www.thewarstore.com/product52211.html- for the sarge (1)

transports
http://armorcast.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=120_64&products_id=354- scarab transports (3)

ignoring my current cadian IG collection, for tank purposes, this stuff should cost about $275, not bad for a horde guard army, and it only goes up to about $400 including my 2 leman russes, valkerie, and vendetta, gotta love ebay

one last question, anyone know of a good bitz pack, or wherever, that has some good, or easily converted, demo-charges?

zealotic
04-25-2010, 11:20 AM
ok, so I found the talarn equipment pack, a suitably awesome looking demo charge for my purposes, I'm thinking of buying 2 of these, anyone have any experience with these small resin bits?

any specific problems like pointy edges and such that anyone know about?
