I think I said it before but I really dig the paint job you did on those guards, im mid conversion turning one into a Dante proxy and this thread has really helped with the styling so thanks
Converting one into Dante seems pretty popular. I should be doing something like that soon... Right now on my list:
Finishing touches on sang guard.
Start my chaplain unti
Go back and put more details on my tournament army.

Duke your army looks great.
Thanks man... ::makes the zoolander face::

In honour of my 20,000th view: Here is my NMM Sanguinor WIP.
He is stage 5 of 12 done so far (on the armour only). Im trying to take more time with this guy which is irritating the old Tournie painter inside of me saying "three colors is done, next!"
C and C welcome.
I also started on my Chaplain on bike... I need to tone down some of the gold and do some stuff to the black armour first.
Remember: his armour (the NMM) isn't even half way done, so keep that in mind.

Wow looks good so far, can't wait to see him finished. keep up the great work
I hope I will be done with the armor by the end of the week... I'm worried about how the varnish will affect the NMM effect... Iorbably won't have an update until tuesday.
After looking at how gold this model looks I felt bad for my whip chaplain on bike, lol

Looks awesome dude, and i'm not usually a fan of that model.
Any chance of a guide to doing the NMM? I'm looking to expand my expertise and have a lot of shiny new High Elves to do in Gold armour..

Looks good Duke!
Remember to water your paints down slightly, all those layers can add up! I like the bone look, once again (future self) you have stolen an idea you no doubt came up with yourself...
Remember the plan!

P.S. I've started my Sanguine Boys, have about 30 assault marines started and looking good so far. I'll post my own 'check out my blood angels' on here when I get back to my new Apt...
@ dr love, I could do a nmm tutorial but let me make sure it looks good first. Lol
@ immortal. I for sure had to water down my paints a lot your right aboutbthe layers adding up. I'm looking forward to seeing your new stuff! Also, I haven't forgotten the plan, never will!

Another update on Sanguinor... I think his armour is "done," at this point... Unless I see something that I CAN fix.
Please comment, it helps me want to keep doing this.

Perfect! Do you want to do the shoulder pads still red like in the WD or just keep them gold?
Thanks for the comment Christian, Im going to do them red. Also, almost everything that is black right now will be white (with the exception of the grail).
I should start working on the shoulders tonight.
Duke
Just as a quick update... I bought some new reds so that I could do the shoulder pads and what not tonight. I should have an update with pics tomorrow.
I also got in a game against a good friend who is an excellent sisters player, I won't go into bat rep... But suffice it to say that my unit of sanguinary guard with attached priest followed by sanguinor destroyed an entire flank and contested the center objective at the end... It was great!
On a more funny note. When I was painting the NMM on sanguinor I asked my wife if it looked like gold. Her reply was "yea, but why not paint it in gold? Wouldn't that just be easier?"....sometimes the best answer is often the most simple one.

:D lol :D That's totally something my wife would say! NMM are cool for the effect and skill development but sometimes i think just using the metal paints are just as good in most cases. especially some that the metal is a bit smoother than GW. that being said, it looks amazing! keep it up bro.
Ok, so I am done with the armour (or at least I think I am) and I am done with the shoulder pads (I think). I am in the middle of painting the white parts like wings and knee pad/ shoulder pad stuff. It is raining today so I might be able to finish the white as well today... Anyhow here he is.
Ill borrow a line from my High School Days "Don't just stare, say something." i.e. C and C welcome and encouraged.

No criticism on your work but I hate that cup, corbulo's at least looks a bit more intimidating and fits with his rules but this one just looks silly.
Good work on the NMM, never could get the hang of it myself, the key seems to be that extra stage of highlighting right up to pure white. I'll have to try that.
Yea, I don't like a lot of things about this model itself... But Im loving the paint job, lol. In hind sight I wish I would have converted my own Sanguinor and painted that all cool. Perhaps if I get really bored/ inspired I will.

My plan for the parchment is to paint it ;) lol. Seriously though, I usually will do a simple scorched brown to bleached bone washed in gryphon sepia, though I ms try something new for this one though. Any suggestions?

Ps I finished the white and started the Grail, I need to get some more paints to continue, so probably an update tomorrow afternoon.

People complain about sanguinor, but, I think the model is awsome. Really sanguinor and Astorath should be side by side. Then you can easily see the contrast between the them.
OK, so I finished the sword and the wings (again, I think so...) so it is time for an update.
Things still to do:
Gems
Grail
Parchment
Sword handle
misc touch ups.
This will be in 2 posts... Also, I have been using my digital camera and playing around with flash and macro functions, let me know if you like these pics better.

i did the same except i go all the way up to white, then wash. Do you use micro pens to write with?
If I am doingnblack then I will use micron pen. On this project I think I'm going to be using a brown-ish scroll writing... I think it helps in making it look aged. As such I will most likely be using a fine detail bruch.
Duke
Quick update on the army...
Played again with Sanguinor and he is a freaking stud... Except when one of his wings fell off! DOH!
here is his Kill tally last game:
10 Man Grey Hunter squad
6 man Long Fangs pack
6 man Long fangs pack
The Sanguinary guard killed more stuff too, but I don't feel like going into their stuff at the moment.
In other news, I should be finishing up Sanguinor this weekend and assembling my "Deathwatch," Character. He is a Blood Angel Librarian (Big suprise) I will post pics of him WIP... Is anyone else playing "Deathwatch?"

Was this vs. Mark's Wolves? Sanguinor ate back his points for sure.
This brings up a good question. Does a Long Fang taste better then a Blood Claw... being aged and all, or would it be tough an leathery? Ork or 'Nid players, do you have any insight on this?
bloodangel 83

nice way to kick most wolf butt, the army looks great as always
@Immortal: Yes, this was vs Marks Wolves... As far as taste, I would say the BAC (blood alcohol content) on ALL wolves is a bit too high for my more refined tastes. Nids are wonderful, my ability to ingest poison makes their blood a taste a little like Tortilla Soup with Jalapenos... Orks are right out! I have, however, had a really old mek boy who tasted like an old cheese... He paired well with wine.
@Blood Angel: Thanks man ::Makes Zoolander face::
Also I should have an update tonight, once the kids go to bed... I have been working on Sanguinor a little bit and also working on my Death Watch Libby, but I lost my shinning gold somehow?!?!? interesting.
Duke
Ok, so it has been a while since my last update... Essentially I haven't felt like it, lol.
Anyhow here is what I am working on right now: It is my Librarian Blood Angel for a Deathwatch RPG we are doing here. He is still a WIP, and I took this pic with my phone so be nice, lol

Thanks for the good words, it is always reinforcing to get C and C... You post did make me realize how many librarians I have now (6). That is a good amount I figure, lol.
I also ordered the following:
Sanguinor
Sanguinary Guard
Astorath
For my Dante Conversion... I hope he works out to be as cool as I think he will, I will post WIP pics once the stuff comes in (thursday)

News Flash!!!
I have started my own blog ( www.dukesinferno.blogspot.com ). I just posted my inaugural post so come and check it out and "follow," the blog!
To those who may be curious, Im not letting this thread die in place of Dukes Inferno, but the Blog will be more than just painting and modelling... Though I may do a little modeling, ::Zoolander face::

Don't Deathwatch Libby's have black armor as well?
Looks good and good luck!
Yea, they do. Though they will often has blue Knee pads and shoulder trim. This model didn't have knee pads as it was so I made the trim blue (after this pic was taken.)
Just an FYI: Im kind of feeling uninspired at the moment and don't know what to paint if anything... I ordered a Sanguinor for my Dante conversion and it is taking seemingly forever to get it. But as the council would tell me "patience young jedi!"
Once I get the required bits together Ill start updating more stuff.
Duke
P.S. I have a write up about our first game of deathwatch on my blog if anyone is interested go check it out.
So I finally did something the other day, lol... I know it has been a while since my last post, but here is my WIP dante.
In the end he will have four wings and I will remove the base he is on now for a terminator base.
Bits for the conversion:
- Sanguinary guard torso, axe arm, shoulder pads, helmet, legs
- Death company Infernus pistol
- Astorath wings
- Sanuinor Wings and jump pack.
Here is he, you can also follo my blog (link in signature) for more updates.

Awesome!
You are making me inspired to work on my Mephiston conversion. I have the Sigvald the Magnificent model, and I think it will work well--- just gotta make a hand for a plasma pistol (I have never done that kinda sculpting before), and fill in all the slannesh symbols. The model itself actually towers over space marines.
I would be very interested to see Sigvald converted to be Mephi. I think I am going to use the pieces of my Astorath model and put a sword in the place of the axe that I gave to Dante.
Duke
So, I posed a question on my blog and wanted to put it here as well.
Should I paint Dante in NMM or should I do TM (true metallics)
Duke

10-21-2010, 03:58 PM
Just to be difficult, I am going to recommend a marble effect so that his armour looks like it is carved.
This would help separate him from the golden sanguinor.
If you want an answer to your actual question though, I would stick with true metallic for the same reason.
I'll be interested to see how your quad wings idea turns out.
Everyone seems to agree, so I started painting him. I went with true metallics (TM). I ammliking how he looks so far but he is for sure a lot different than good 'ol' sanguinor. I would also encourage eceryone to 'follow' my blog ( link below) and follow his progress, among other things

is it true that blood angels can now deep strike land raiders???
and does it cost any points for the ability???
thanks..

Christian
11-02-2010, 04:29 AM
Yes it is true and no it doesnt cost you any points. Just...the Land Raider is pretty massive so think before you want it to deepstrike.
Back to topic. Duke these models are awsome! I just think Dante is a little too shiny.
Immortal
12-03-2010, 05:58 PM
I've seen this model in person... it is shinny, but I think the light that Duke used when he took the pics make it brighter then it seems.
Other then the quad wings (awesome idea btw) this conversion looks alot like mine. I'm curious how the new GW model will look, which I am sure is to come out in the 2nd BA wave next year with the Storm Raven. I'll be posting my own pics on the site in the next few days... my BA army is coming along nicely, and if I have a threat like this perhps it'll motivate me to paint more!
~Immortal
Holy threadomancy batman!
Yes, he is right the land raider can deepstrike but it is risky! (get a scout biker squad to help or drop pod.)
Immortal is right, the lighting made him look brighter than he is... More updates soon to come...

don't forget the Scout Sgt can get locator beacons too! (and the Stormraven. But a Land Raider and Stormraven can be a little bit rich...)
Scout sergeants would be a goo alternative... "hello, I'm deep striking my death company land raiders filled with 14 death company with power weapons and a reclusiarch... Have fun"
Duke
THREADOMANCY!!!
Ok so Im working on my Grey Knights right now and need help... Here are a few pics of my Razorback, (WIP) What should I do on the front and the back? I am thinking of making the back door like the side doors e... Or is it too much? I was also thinking of free-handing a shield on the back door with kill counts/honors and such from the squad.
I will also be doing freehand on the tops of the Vehicles as I have done in the past... really though I need some help on the front as it leaves me wanting something.
Here are the pics, Im looking for ideas on what to do for the front panel... I have already "filled in," the recess of the panel to make it flat so I can do whatever I want now on the area.
NOTE: The "GS" and the Grey stuff have been cleaned up since I took this pic. Also I have streightened the teeth a bit after I took the pic, so ignore that.

I think I'd GS or freehand paint some flames around the book. You could mix in a few skulls to fit with the gothic look of the side doors.
Hmmm, Don't know what I think about flames... Seems a bit too biker bar for my style, but maybe ill play around with the idea and see what I like, anyone else?

Biker Bar!!! Hell's Angels!
Whee!
This razorback looks sweet! Personally, I think it looks fine. There's enough detail on the side doors to not need to embellish the rest of the tank, or the tank will look overdone.
Basically, ask yourself, what do you want people to look at?

I gotta say duke. wish I could paint like u
Thanks for the compliement! Here are my quick tips to becoming a better painter:
1. Slow down
2. Only paint when you feel inspired, stop the second you don't.
3. Water down your paints and work in thin layers of the same color
4. Try something new... I didn't think I could freehand, until I tried it.
Hope that helps a little, Ill have more updates soon.

What are you using as your base spray for your GKs? Are you airbrushing or using something out of a can. I keep experimenting with different things, and would love your input!
Here is the mega secret.... I can't claim it cause it was given to me by a golden daemon winner. But...
Tammaya: light gun metal spray.
Then I wash it (carefully) in badab black, then I build up the silver from boltgun to mithril silver on the extreme edges.... That is it, if you want a more detailed recipe I can do that as well.

I use the Tamia gold for my Sang. Guard. I know I SHOULD use the Tamiya stuff, but I have to drive out of the way to get it (to a hobbytown USA) and it's sorta expensive.
Good to know, Duke. Always enjoy your stuff.
FYI guys, I posted up a tutorial on my blog or how I paint my grey knights.
