Is BFG a dead game? Anyone play it at your local hobby store? I purchased and played on and off a few years back when there was a community here in Hawaii, but it seems that the game just died. Theres no one to play with or talk to regarding this boardgame.I love the game and the rules, it's the most technical space warfare game that I have played.
So how is it on the mainland? Is there still a remnant following?

It's not dead, it's just pining for the fjords! (Sorry, couldn't resist).
It's an excellent game and it still has a very loyal following - though nowhere near as large as most of the main games.
However, I'm not sure I'd call it overly technical. As someone who used to play Star Fleet Battles (http://www.starfleetgames.com/starfleetbattles.shtml) back in the day, this is nearly "beer and pretzels." Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but technical... not so much.
Really? I basically think BFGs rules are lousy. Its movement is silly, the my-whole-turn, your-whole-turn timing mechanism is inane for any game, but especially for space combat games, since most alternative rules-sets have managed to do away with them.
The only thing that BFG actually does well is the Weapons Battery table, and how it accounts for a variety of factors which make ships harder to hit. Otherwise, it's rules are basically bad--not interesting in a technical way at all.
I like the idea of a 40k ship combat game, and I would kind of like to play BFG. Around here, the problem is that there just aren't people to play with. My group of friends has, though, been considering picking up some BFG ships and using the Full Thrust (http://www.groundzerogames.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=50) rules instead of the BFG rules, since they are considerably better thought out.

Yes, the my-turn your-turn thing is a dread and a failure. That puts the game completely on luck of the dice. Your opponent could sweep the deck on you with a streak of good dice rolls. I wish they would change this for 40k too. Othergames like CBT and Axis and Allies (CMG) have it where both players take casualties at the same time, keeps it fair.
I guess the game really isn't that technical :o I havn't played myself for some time now. The rulebook looks sure big, but only 20% of it has the actual rules, the rest goes to fluff and ship stats.

Used to play BFG when it first came out ... played it damn near every weekend... but there was only two of us... my opponent moved to Aussie for a couple of years so the ships got consigned to the bits box ... the eldar heavy cruisers make a great basis for an imperial jetbike conversion ...

I play!
or at least I did. I have a several thousand points of Chaos sitting around with nothiing to fight.
I'm fighting hard to get more people in my gaming group to play it.

after having my fleet languished in dry dock, and me wanting another fleet even, i decided to get my gaming group into BFG this past christmas. i got them 3 plastic cruisers each as gifts. this came to about 25 US$ each and now my fleets are launching to battle again. I decided this was money well spent rather than buying another fleet/army i wasn't going to play with much.
btw, BFG discussion is more active at portmaw.com

A few people play it at my local GW and a few other places I know has some players. Most times you can just ask staff a local hobby shops and GWs if there are any players. I found most times they are just as eager to play a couple of games and cut loose their ships.

We play from time to time...though admittedly, it has been a few months. Wish we played more. Need to get a league started again.

GW really needs to start supporting Specialist Games more...

My friend and I played 1000pts cruiser clash but allowed escourt squadrons etc.
We are still learning the rules so we did away with terrain to avoid complication.
I had 1 Battle Barge, 6 Nova's and 5 Hunters
My friend had Gorbags revenge, 1 kill cruiser, 1 terror ship and some gunships and ram ships.
It was a big Melee but even so tactics and decision making really came into it. I really enjoyed the crippled rules, critical damage, catastrophic damage, gunnery chart, lance rules, movement and blast markers and more, not to mention the race specific rules or the amazing order rules. We had escorts bording each other, Drifting hulks hiding squadrons of Nova's from retaliation, ships on fire for several turns, massive broad sides at close range, Escort dogfights and Gorbags revenge eating marine escort squadrons one after the other.
The long and the short of it was that the Marines came out on top but both of us really enjoyed the game and could easily imagine in our minds eye what the rules were trying to convay. All the above and we barely even began to make full use of what the rules can allow you to do with all the other various senarios and terrain etc.
I think Gothic is brilliant.

During this past Games Day I found a table where there were some guys playing Battlefleet Gothic. While "organizers" ended up being quite dis-functional and unorganized the game ended up being fun what little I was able to play. Since Games Day I have been creeping around forums and E-bay to find my self a cheap Imperial army that I can use as a fleet for my Sisters of Battle army that I am working on:-P.
I picked up a few models off e-bay on some auctions that were cheap but honestly have no idea what I need. At this point though I'm rather sure that locally no one actually owns any other models so its probably pointless. The only place I have seen selling the miniatures other than Games Day was The Wall in Western/Mid Mass.

My pal and I just bought the rule book and armada book each and then bought a fleet. You can get a 1000pt fleet from Gamesworkshop for about £50 and that seems to be a good place to start.
Get a friend to get into it with you! Incorporate a fleet game into a 40K campaign!

I am a huge fan of BFG and still get in the occasional game with some of my friends. I do like the model range, I would like the rules and what not to be a little better supported, but the fact that you can download the rules for free off the GW site ... is pretty unprecedented for GW's notioriously stingy selves.
Additionally, I would like to throw out that at the Baltimore GD 2010 the ForgeWorld presentation mentioned an upcoming Imperial Armour book which would have some additional BFG rules.

Awesome!!! I would probably play BFG if anyone near me does. PM me if you've heard of Armada Games...other than through the Jawaballs VBR.
