this is in reference to the ork kustom force field. that gives a 5+ invun save vs shooting attacks.

example. a unit of boyz with a big mek with KFF is next to a vehicle that explodes. Can they take the 5+ inv save for the KFF?

While the rules don't specifically state it most groups treat it as a shooting attack with the vehicle as the "point of origin" for determing wound allocation.
So I'd say yes, you can use the kustum force field save.

I would have thought not. Presumably the KFF projects some kind of bubble that protects the model from projectiles entering from outside, but not from CC attacks because they're too close. Hence, if the Trukk you're riding explodes, that is like a CC attack.

(I know this is a fluff-based answer, rather than referring to rules, but no one else is actually referring to any rules on this either...)

The KFF is not in the vehicle that exploded.. this is a mek or morknaught next to a vehicle that explodes.
