Hi all,

This is my first ever post on any forum, so please be nice lol :D. i have a few examples of a blood angel test paint to try and get a good vibrant red that blends from almost black up to orange. I would like to know what you guys think? BTW - its a test and only done the shoulder pad so far so please ignore the rest of the model and any faults you may see elsewhere. :)

Here is a basic run down of the steps i used (its very similar to the space hulk guide)

1- (ran out of drak flesh so made my own) and mixed this with blood red at a 2:1 ratio
2-same as above but 1:1
3- added black to the mix and applied to the recesses
4- watered down step 2
5- step 1 but reversed so 2 times blood red to the (dark flesh mix)
6- watered down blood red
7- same as above
8- same as above
9- yeh theres a fair few layers of blood red to get a nice rich coat that isn't lumpy
10- blazing orange highlight
11- blazing orange elf flesh highlight
12- wash this highlight with very watered down blazing orange
13- wash all with ball red watered down

Long i know lol but i think its worth it. :D

It looks good from what I can tell. It looks a bit orangish, but I have a feeling that is due to the light.

Funny, I was about to say the same thing. How close is the colour balance in the photo to real life?

I'm not happy with the current range of GW reds, since there's no actual red colour. I use a vallejo red over mechrite, and though this is for a much darker red, they (or someone else) may have something that suits you better. You may also get a better version by skipping the organge and mixing yellow to the red. I read a good short article on colour theory that explained why you can't always just jump from red to orange (they used royal? and electric blues) - the problem is that while they are different saturations (lighter/darker) they are also different hues? (from different parts of the colour wheel),and I think this is giving you a two-colour effect (ie orange/red paint), which look kind of cool in the top photo, but not very Blood Angels unfortunately.

Cheers for the comments so far guys.

having looked at the pictures again i see what you mean. i did boost the levels so that the white backgrounds were not as dark and that appears to have made the red appear alot more orange! lol i will try take some new pictures under better lighting, (im still experimenting with my new camera :D i take landscapes mainly lol)

as for the highlight of orange, it looked ok but i think i went one too far with the elf flesh, and it made it like super orange after wards (lesson learned ) :(

ive also looked at p3 and vajello (sorry if thats spelt wrong) paints, i do like the darker reds but find them a tad purplish for my liking. i used to want a darker blood angels army, but in the flesh i really like the effect on this terminator shoulder pad, and i think with some tweaking it might work.

i'm also very torn about using army painter spray red. although i could base a lot of models quickly and then build up the shades and layers after wards, im not sure if it would be too red lol, if anyone out there has used it before please let me know ow you got on.

if you want a darker red add a little DA green. Otherwise I would say you did fine. I'm not much on the orange highlights though. I use bubonic brown to highlight reds. It gives a nice tone, more on the yellowish red than the orange red.
