After about twenty years of wanting to create my own custom Space Marine chapter I finally got motivated to do so last year shortly after the latest Codex Space Marines was released. Inspired by the Mechanicus themed tanks I had turned out the summer before, I decided to contstruct a chapter with a similar paint scheme.

The Spears of Ares is a chapter with close connections to the Adeptus Mechanicus and whose names, symbology and history are aligned with what they've been able to learn of classical Greece through the mists of time leading up to the 41st millenium. Ares is of course the Greek god of war and his Roman name is Mars, so my chapter name provides the essential connections to both ancient Greece and the Adeptus Mechanicus that I wanted for this army.

Chapter Master Minos of the Spears Of Ares Space Marine Chapter is armed with a Thunderhammer and Storm Shield. In the classical Greek traditions adopted by the chapter, all Thunderhammers have spear points in place of hammer heads and the shields are round like the Hoplites of old. Terminator troopers have abstract mosaic patterns on their bases while characters have pictures like the bull shown here.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2010/3/25/92661_sm-Conversion%2C%20Painting%2C%20Space%20Marines%2C%2 0Terminator%20Armor%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.jpg

I converted this Venerable Dreadnought to the Spears Of Ares theme. All the models in this army have mosaic tile basing with tiles of various sizes. For the Dreadnoughts (there are five so far) I've used large tiles on the bases. I used the plain front plates on the Venerable's sarcophagus so that I could customize his decorations. One plate has a Hoplite painted on it, the other the chapter's cog symbol cut from thin plastic card. The skull on the cog was cut from one of the Crux Terminatus symbols that come with the Venerable Dreadnought kit. The Venerable Dreadnought carries a huge spear like the Hoplites of old. The spear is built from plastic rod, thick plastic card and Apoxie Sculpt. The Dreadnought's Greek Corinthian style helmet is converted from the Warriors of Chaos sprue. The molded decorations on the vertical portion of the right shoulder were covered with thin plastic card and then the Greek key pattern was hand painted onto it, white over black. The alternating black and white patterns seen throughout the model are meant to echo the pattern used so often by the Mechanicus on their badges. This model was featured on the March 22, 2010 "What's New Today" post on the Games Workshop website (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=9200023a).

The Mechanicus inspired color scheme is played out again throughout these Land Speeders with alternating black and white patterns on control surfaces and areas of the hulls. Drivers have the Mechanicus badge pauldrons from the vehicle accessory sprue. The Hoplite theme plays out in the converted horsehair crests of the drivers and the Greek style pillars and mosaic basing of the flying stands.

The cog-like fan housings in the Vindicator kit made it easy to execute the Mechanicus-related paint scheme for my Spears Of Ares Space Marine chapter on this Linebreaker Squadron. Also note how the pattern on the Siege Shields interlocks from vehicle to vehicle when the command vehicle is in the center.

I already have about 3,000 points worth of models painted for this army with a lot more planned. If there is interest, I will post more pictures in the near future. Thanks for looking. Also note that I have a gallery on dakkadakka (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-13937-5808_Spears%20Of%20Ares%20Space%20Marines.html) for this army and other projects.

Looking good. I recommend picking up a set of gasket punches to make the plasticard base covers fit on the bases. I am doing a similar basing style to look like a factory floor with plasticard, and I found a set of punches that has perfect sizes to punch out discs to fit on top of 25 and 40mm bases.

What paints do you use to get that lovely shade of red, Mr Scorpion? I like the red on your Mechanicus army too, is it the same?

Cool. Just watch out for bald, angry white guys with red tatoos who may want to kill your guys with chain-blades. :p

Thanks for the great feedback. Here's another photo. This one shows the "Titanhammer" formation for the army as well as a Dreadnought, Tactical Squad and Commander Minos. All models in the army have mosaic tile bases, different units have different size tiles. All Thunderhammer Terminators have spears and round shields and each squad has a different animal on their shield. A larger version of this image is in my Dakkadakka Gallery for this army.

And to answer Eldargal's question about the color, the main red color is burgundy. In Games Workshop terminology that translates to Red Gore.

Your army looks awesome, the land speeder columns, bases and color scheme are absolutely amazing. What did you use to make the columns for your land speeders?

Brass Scorpion

Thanks! The columns are cake pillars like those that can be purchased in craft stores such as AC Moore or Michael's.

Here's a shot of my Sternguard Squad for the Spears Of Ares. The black and white split helmets distinguish them from ordinary tactical squads. There are four combi weapons in the squad, three combi-melta guns and one combi-plasma. As always in this army the unit has tile bases with a distinguishing pattern.

Note that there's a gallery for this army on dakkadakka (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-13937-5808_Spears%20Of%20Ares%20Space%20Marines.html).

This Land Raider Terminus Ultra conversion was done in such as way as to use only two sponsons rather than the conventional four suggested by the Terminus Ultra Datasheet. This was the first major Mechanicus themed conversion that I did, I believe back in 2008. It inspired the Mechanicus themed Shadowsword and Stormblades I did shortly thereafter and eventually the entire Space Marine Spears Of Ares Chapter of which it is now a part.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Here's another photo. This Spears Of Ares Dreadnought, Deimos, is armed with a multi-melta. I combined scenic urban rubble basing with the army's standard mosaic tile basing for this model.

I love that Terminus. Very clever and just plain awesome. I myself also use Greek names for my custom Chapter, though it's safe to say that I didn't go any further than that. Keep up the brilliance, Mr Scorpion.

Here's a photo of the three Ironclad Dreadnoughts of the Spears Of Ares chapter. Arms are removeable and interchangeable. These ancient warriors are named Phobos (Fear), Atreus (Fearless), and Athos (Immortal). One of these models is a conversion of an Assault On Black Reach Dreadnought while another was built with the ordinary Space Marine Dreadnought model. By stretching the extra parts that came with a single Ironclad kit and acquiring just a couple extra arms, I actually have seven arms for the three Ironclads and can switch them around as appropriate for the type of game being played. A larger version of this photo is available in my Dakkadakka Gallery.

Thanks for the interest. Here's a wee bit of background. The Spears Of Ares are a mysterious chapter known to venerate technology and knowledge. While their motives are often shrouded in secrecy it is known that they have close connections at times to the Adeptus Mechanicus. They also revere what little knowledge they've been able to recover of ancient Athens, admiring both the ancient city's warrior ethic and their constant quest for knowledge and enlightenment. This makes them secretive in the xenophobic and superstitious environment that surrounds them outside their home world. Warriors of the chapter shed their given names when they are enlisted and adopt names from ancient Greek culture and mythology.

Here's the newest addition to the Spears Of Ares heavy support team, a Land Raider Redeemer. Highlights include decorative conversion to the top front door and on top of the main hull.

I've just added another character to my Spears Of Ares army and a photo of him to my Gallery here on Dakka (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/112154-Phineas%2C%20Chief%20Librarian%20Terminator.html?m =2). You can also see and hear a bit about him below.

Phineas is the Chief Librarian of the Spears Of Ares. The alternating black and white Mechanicus theme is played out in multiple places throughout the Terminator armor while the ancient Greek motif is once again expressed through the character's name and the mosaic basing. Being a major character, Phineas has an animal portrait on his base, one commonly found in ancient Greek artwork. I chose the Dolphin for Phineas because their intelligence made a good association for a Librarian as did the ideas that Dolphins exist in two worlds both of land and water and have a sixth sonar sense while Librarians use their sixth psychic sense to perceive both the natural and supernatural worlds of Warhammer 40K.
