so, i bought the new plastic venerable dred last week. i have a large Black Templars army and wanted to do something different with it. the first thought was doing this particular dred with a white paint job. i took it a little further and thought about a paint job that had a marble look to it. he'd basically be a giant, walking, killing shrine. i've painted stone before, namely Grimaldus' retinue member that carried the pillar. that was a long time ago, and while it had a good result, i think it could be better. anyone have any experience or tips for painting marble? thanks in advance. if i do it, i'll try to post some pics!

Ive had luck with marble by painted up a nice shaded grey, then putting streaks of ink across it. Its takes a bit of trial and error but it turned out some pretty cool looking storm shields.

sounds good, i'll give it a try on a trial piece. i'll probably work the grey to a white, then go from there.

i use a silver streaked marble, i found a tutorial online(cant remember whose, but kudos)where i paint the fig in deneb stone, then get a plastic bag, scrunch it up and dip in mithril silver, then press the painted bag on the surfac gently and hey presto instant marble effect! i guess you could use various tones for a stone effect though

i saw something similar. a guy was painting RC cars. i'm going to try and find pics of white marble and go from there. i'm guessing deneb stone with some silvers, browns, and who knows what else. thanks again for the help.

In regards to painting marble, the best technique I have found is to use a "real" sponge to stipple on your various marbling colors onto your base background color. On the attached pictures I used a couple of shades of green along with washes of Badab Black followed by a final stiple of green lightened with just a bit on bone to achieve the effect which I think worked pretty good.

I picked up some cheap sponge at either Pat Catans or Michaels in the painting section and have used these for multiple projects as I have also used them for some rusted area effect on different metal spots on vehicles and terrain.http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt187/Hialmar/P1030137.jpg

While this is onyl one way of achieving the look you want I found that it works best for me.

Oddly, todays GW news showed a tank (Wave Serpent)painted in a "marble effect" style and had a little bit about how it was done:
