Hi,
i've a plan to model a SM assault squad with the two options of having jumpacks and normal backpack in case I decide to send them on onboard of a rhino. I already magnetized weapons on tanks and deard arms but I'm not certain about the size of the magnets I'll have to use for the marines and if the back of the torso will be thick enuogh to hold it.
Did anyone already have done something similar? I'll greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks :)

yeah man i've even magnetized the arms of a few so i can switch assault weapons. I've done about 30 marines like this and am going to do another 10 or so with the back pack action. It's not really that hard. I've found using the pin vise hand drill from GW with the largest bit i can fit in it (from a small drill bit kit) is a good start. I then use a dremel with a larger bit but only turn it by hand as all i need to do is widen the hole. I use pretty solid sized magnets, i don't like packs wobbling. The biggest thing is to try and get them flush. Thicker mags work for the back of the model since you have more plastic to work with, the packs need a little more care bc the plastic is thinner. So if depending on mag size recessing the ones in the model may help.

one of the cheaper places i've found for mags

Yeah, that's where I am. After buying the magnets, making sure you have the right size dremel bitz, etc, it's just not worth it for me.

I wholly respect those that do, though. Kudos to you.

Thank you very much for the advice! Colud you tell me the size you think I should get? I'm not too familiar with inches etc (metric decimal system anyone?);)

yeah i use a 1/8"x1/32" for thin stuff and 1/8"x1/16 or 1/8" for the models. the larger size almost fits perfectly into the hole in the backpack that's already there, just needs a little widening.

I use 1/8 X 1/16 or if you want smaller I use1/16 X 1/32

i prefer the 1/8x1/16, i find the 1/16x1/32 better for magnetizing weapons as they aren't that strong due to size, but the i hate wobble../lol

The largest drill bit I could fit into the GW pin vice was a 1/8" drill bit, which is perfect because I use almost exclusively 1/8" magnets for my tau suits and such.

I use www.kjmagnetics.com for my magnet purchases, but magnets everywhere are going to run you similar prices. I like KJ because I get deep discounts when I buy a lot and their standard shipping is top-notch.

I usually skip on the thicker magnets and just stack two or three magnets if I want a thicker one. Yeah, two 1/32 magnets are more expensive than one 1/16 magnet, but when I'm buying the 1/32 ones by the 500 or 1000, it is just easier. Just don't lose them. 1000 1/8 by 1/32 magnets stack together about the size of a tube of chap-stick, lol.
