Ok so here's the deal

A little while ago I asked for some guidance on my first army in the forums here and after batting about what I would like to be able to do the best army seemed to be necron (which I am more than happy with, they look awesome) so I'm ordering myself the rule book (the necron bookb,I already have a current core rules book) iut at the same time I would like to get my hands on my first few models to get painting (which is part of the hobby I'm most excited about).

What I'm wondering is, can you guys help me build an 1850 point list and then scale it back to a working, say, 1000 point list using only models in that list, so I have what I'm aiming for along with what I'm getting initially because money only goes so far and I can't buy a full functioning army in one paycheck (well, I possibly could, but I don't think that I would be eating in the same month)

Since I don't have the necron book yet, I don't know all of the models and their capability and for obvious legal reasons won't ask, but what I am looking for is durable ranged units to take centre, decent amount of mobility for flanking up the sides and I'm told that there is a flyer that let's me teleport which sounds incredible if true.

Can anyone help?

Whether you are playing CAD or Decurion you are going to need basic troops - warriors and immortals. I rather like the Canoptic Harvest formation so also start collecting Wraiths, Tomb Spyder and Scarabs (come with warriors).

As you well know by now, Necrons can be obnoxiously tough and quite deadly. This list can be pretty scary in its own right.

It starts with Trollzyn the Infinite. Trollzyn eats tarpits for breakfast, especially when he's attached to the Sword & Board Lychguard. The T5 Lychguard with the 3+ invuln saves escort Trollzyn over to a blob that is acting as a tarpit that would slow down the rest of this army. Trollzyn challenges the Sergeant/Nob/Etc. and if he kills said Sergeant/Nob/Etc. with his S+2 AP4 weapon, he hits anything from the same faction as that S/N/E within 6" with an S4 AP- attack. And Trollzyn already has base S5, not to mention T5, 3 wounds and a 3+ save, so he's tough and can hit pretty hard.

Flayed Ones can follow in and really cause some pain. They have twin AP5 Shred claws, which can give them 4 S4 AP5 attacks each. One unit of 10 (assuming they all survive and manage to surround an enemy unit) can pop off 40 S4 AP5 attacks. You will have two such units. They also have Deep Strike, Fear, Infiltrate and Reanimation Protocols. Enjoy.

Your two units of Wraiths will also bring the hurt up close and personal. They've got 2 wounds and T5 with 3+ invuln saves, so they can take a bit of a beating. They're pretty mobile with Wraithflight. They're S6 so they can hurt a bit, and with Swiftstrike from their Whip Coils they bump their I2 to I5, which means they'll be hitting before a pretty good amount of other units they might be engaging with. TL:DR - They're mobile, tough, they can hurt, and they're quick to strike. And you have two units of them.

The Tomb Blades are only here because of the point value and because they can be pesky little gits. They're fast little T5 jetbikes, they've got twin-linked 24" S5 AP4 Rapid Fire Gauss blasters, and thanks to the Nebuloscope those blasters ignore cover. There are a few ways you can use them - speed them off to secure a distant objective, pick off isolated infantry, or use them for flank harassment. Or all of the above.

The Warriors have a pretty basic setup. They're in two units with the minimum troop count of ten each, and they come with Ghost Arks. They provide some decent firepower at 24" with those S4 AP5 Rapid Fire Gauss flayers, and the Ghost Arks provide them some extra protection and firepower. They give this army some shooty.

The beautiful pair of Doom Scythes gives you big shooty for punching out enemy tanks or formations. The Death Rays are 24" S10 AP1 guns that can fire lances to chew through armor or blasts to blow up infantry. To boot, you've got Twin-Linked Tesla Destructors at S7 that can arc for two additional hits on the target on a To Hit roll of 6. They are not invincible with Armor 11 all around and 3HP, but they can be tough to hit and like the previously mentioned Ghost Arks and the soon-to-be covered Monolith, the Doom Scythes have Living Metal.
The Monolith is a big tough S.O.B., with 4 HP and Armor 14 all around. It brings 4 independently firing 24" S5 AP4 Gauss Flux Arcs to the table, along with a Particle Whip that can whip out a S8 AP3 Large Blast with a 24" range. It also gives you the Eternity Gate, which can be a nifty little tool for moving around Infantry (give it a read in the Codex).

Hopefully someone else can comment on this or offer you a better list. I happen to like this list because it mixes tough Crons that can get up close and bring some pain with some tough Crons that can hurt from a distance. It's just something to think about and to build towards, and you can go back and tailor it more to your tastes. But it'd be one I'd be pretty happy to spend my money on if I wasn't getting stuck in with the Tau right now.
