Heya all,

I'm new to these forums although I check daily the main page for all the new tidbits and thought provoking tactica. Thought I'd start posting here as I both play 40K (marines all the way) and paint minitures both for myself, ebay auction and commissions.

Thanks guys. Glad you like my efforts.

Vorlorn: Basically I gravel up and add resin rocks as I see fit. Paint them using the deep blue foundation paint (can't remember the colour) and dry brush with a pale grey. For the snow I mix GW's snow basing material with pva into a thick paste and literally paint it on.

I've an idea for a Golden Deamon entry but just haven't got the time to do it yet. I entered as kid for a laugh but not done any formal comps' for years.

Vorlorn: I've a few ideas for tutorials but not the time at the moment. I'm very active on another forum with 'wips'. I'll see about starting posting here too. At least you can see what's happening and maybe gleen ideas from what I do.

Thnaks guys. It means loads to get praise from so many worth Bols users. ;-)

Yellow: I start with a white undercoat. Over this I put a smooth layer of Sunburst Yellow. Once dried a wash of Ogre Flesh. Finally I build up thin layers from Sunburst Yellow up to almost white. Hope that helps.

It was done with loads of layers. Started with a few washes of devlan mud and ogre flesh then mixed some light rust and dark rust pigments into the ink and painted it on, whilst wiping and dabbing it off with a dry cloth. Once all dry I worked over it all with a few different pigment powders to get that dry look in places.

that is just amazing, and i love the genestealer bits it adds a nice touch, totally awesome i have to say. Your paint job is really good and your gem painting looks amazing, how do you do the gems on there and make them look so real. i ask because i am using that in my own army and need some pointers, i have a link and its kinda helping but any extra advice would be awesome.

Emerald rose window: I always start my gems with black. Over this and towards the bottom of this I build up in thin layers brighter and lighter colour (dependant on colour of gem) adding the lightest bits under the gem. Once done a small spot of white for the highlight and gloss varnish it. After all gems are highly reflective. Hope that helps!

Wow, as usual just amazing.

As for my gems, I am actually making crystals growing out of my monstrous creatures backs, which im going to use sprues for. But I am also going to do the same crystal effect for the scything talons on all my creatures, of varying colours, and was wondering if this same technique would be a good idea for that kind of look.

Love your work and appreciate your advice, this being my first army this girl could use a little help, though i am happy with my results so far.

Tynskel: You are dead right. It looks quite upto date, unlike many other models of the same period.

Widow: Good luck with your work. I think the technique I use for gems could look good. Start with a black base and add a few laters of progressively lighter colour under the gem. Finaly spot highlights of white followed by a layer or two of gloss varnish.

Thanks mate! ;)

No problem asking at all. I start with a black undercoat followed by a shining gold base coat. This is washed black before highlighting starts. Using the same gold feather the colour towards the edges to start building up the mid toned areas. Then use burnished gold to add in feathered highlights. Finally add some mithril silver to the burnished gold to make it lighter and again pick out the edges etc. Lastly wash it all with ogre flesh.

I gotta say that these are some of the looking Sanguinary Guard models I have seen. I love the colour choices (the gold mixed with the pink of the wax and the turquoise of the swords is amazing). Right now my Sanguinary Guard have been sitting in limbo mostly because I am finding them too dark (specifically the weapons...they don't "pop" enough) and I was wondering which colours you used for the swords? Thanks in advance!

Ghoulio: Thanks! Happy to help mate. I started with Hawk Turqouise which was washed with black. Then feather the Hawk Turqouise over this to bring out the mid tones slowly adding white to get the progressively lighter tones. Once a bright highlight is reached at the edges I washed them with green. Good luck!

Really fantastic work, it was a joy looking through this gallery! Full ranges of color and shades on each model, and fantastic detail on armor, freehand, and vehicles.. Just all around skilled work.

If you get a chance, one thing I'd really love to see is a step-by-step. Not even a tutorial, really, just a picture of a model for each layer of paint you throw on? I have a feeling that might help a few of us as painters!

the Sanguinor on page 6: is that a non-metallic metals effect on the armor? and how did you get the sky-blue shading effect on the pure white wings?
I just picked up the mini myself and would like some tips on painting it.

Thanks for your kind words! :)

For the Sanguinors armour I painted using metallics. I'm not a fan of NMM as it isn't realistic although looks good.

For the wings I started with a base of Astronomican Grey and then gave this a wash of blue. This was followed by successivley building thinn layers of white feathering them towards the shadows.

Amazing work brotha. What kind of camera do you use? I have an SLR but no macro lens and I can't get this close. I see you use an infinity table of some sort, looks very good. Also, I think your work would benefit greatly if you painted your metals using non metallic paint...a lot more work but a surefire way to make these...ultra epic?

To answer some of the questions.....yea, I do wet blend and feather quite alot. I think it adds more to the model.

I use a Sony Cybershot, tripod, Daylight light and an A4 printer paper box with some white paper taped into a curve inside it. Nothing fancy but works a treat.
