View Full Version : Dice: Symbols on the 6 or the 1?

So after one particularly disastrous game, I've discovered that roughly half the dice I have with special symbols have the mark on the 6, and the other half on the 1. Which got me thinking - the 1 seems logical because it's replacing a single dot with a single symbol, on the other hand 6's are often super-relevant (hey rending...) and I can see wanting to associate whatever symbol with "Awesome!"

So I was curious - do you have a preference ,and if so, for which?

Im more used to logo on the 6s but science tell us we should put them on the 1s so that there is a similar amount of material displaced on each side, or get casino style ones where any missing space has been drilled and filled and put it between the dots on the two. I kind of want to grab a bunch of "Sahara" dice to use at my tabletop games

Logo as the six all the way.

Definitely the six, I hate it when it's on the one.

Definitely the one... the symbols often could be a big one pip, very rarely look like a 6. Just makes logical sense to me. I'm surprised by the number of 6 people...

When folk go to the bother of spending a stupid amount of money on a few dice (I'll hold my hand up for Blood Angels), it's usually because they like that faction/army and want to see it do well.

It follows then, for most people, that they want to associate their faction's iconography with success and winning. When I see that winged blood drop come up it means I've rolled a one. Well done Blood Angels, you f*****d the dog.

I also play Flames of War, and have a set of dice for the Irish Guards. Their badge replaces the 6, so when it comes up it is usually a success. Go Guards! You can do eet!

The icon doesn't have to look like a 6 to mean win.

It is more of an aesthetic thing for me than a semantic thing I guess. Good for Ld and other characteristics tests though...

Yeah, drives me nuts that my Harlequin dice have their symbol on the one, which mostly represents failure in 40k dicing.

prefer it on the one as it's a single symbol replacing a single pip. though it's up to the person playing's preference. the thing that I don't abide by is people who use a mix in the same rolls/game. it has to be a one or a six, seen a few people do that and then start taking the mick and saying they're all whatever is advantageous at the time.

Personally, I prefer symbols on the 6 as it's "special". Still, to echo many before me, it's only a problem if someone rolls a mix of 1-symbols and 6-symbols.

Why would you want your company's logo to come up on the number that often means something negative? Your logo comes up, then groans around the table. Makes no sense haha.
When 6's come up, there are always cheers around the table! It's pretty obvious.

This thread is awesome; I love discussions where both sides are so passionate about the "obvious" answer! :-)

I like the symbol on the six. It just "feels" right aesthetically.

The Symbol should be on the 6, because when you see it, you should be happy and not annoyed ... GW Dices unfortunatly have the symbol on the one ...

Usually, higher is better, lower is worse, or even the 1 is a disaster etc.
So you want the bad stuff like skulls or explosion or whatever that looks negative on the one.
You want the good stuff, like your logo, on the 6. You want your logo to represent the good, not the bad.
If i were to play the Batman, and usually uyou have to roll above lets say a 3+ to hit, or maybe for something really hard a y6, you want the Batman Logo there, to show how good you are. You don't want the logo of the Batman on every fail you have. It just makes sense.
I want my Tau, I, Ultramarines symbol, Mechanicum head on the 6. So when you hit right and good, the enemy knows by who it was hit.
Rolling all ones and getting all Tau logos would show how much the Tau sux.
Now, maybe a skull on white dice, for veterans would be fine on a six too, that basically depends on the interpretation of the skull at that point.
You could for instance do a Tau logo on the 6 and the skull on the 1, to signify death, or failure.
The fact that it is a single pip is a weird idea, what then, 6 really small mechanicum skulls ? Right. It's weird reasoning to me to do that.

In games where the 1 is the best you can get, sure, it would be more fitting there. But that's quite rare in comparison.

More importantly, who knows manufacturers that already make dice with specific or special logos ?
I know you can have your own made at Chessex, but seems a bit pricey. Which makes sense because they have to make a mold for one side i guess. And the amount of dice will typically be a low run.

The only thing that makes sense really, is on the 6.
In almost every game, 1 is bad, 6 is good.
So you want your logo to represent the good, not the bad.
Plus, it's real easy to spot that magic 6 that usually shows something extra or really good happens, as is often the case in 40K.
The one generally represents bad, failure. Do you really want to show your Tau/Ultramarines/Blood Angel/Mechanicum logo etc. on the 1 ? Didn't think so.
And the people saying it's only one symbol so it should be the 1, that just makes no sense, unless your logo is one tiny dot, and then you already have your special dice.

More importantly, i saw a screenshot somewhere with all kinds of cool greenlantern and batman logos etc, where are they from ? Is there a manufacturer already making some good stuff ? I know Chessex can make them for you, but that can be pricey depending on the number you order. Maybe of some friends join it it'll bring it down.

On the one, as per the big gun dice.

Though I do like the idea of the 6 as a 6 is special and good

I'm confused. Either way it should be the same which ever you choose

Khorne dice with the symbol on the 1 makes sense. You roll a 1, khorne is happy!

Agree with the symbols on the 6's, it just feels right, atleast to me.

Can I vote for no symbols? It can get confusing when your opponent has a mixture of symbols on the 1's and 6's and scoops them up so quickly you can't see what is being rolled.

Personally, I don't like logo dice.

Also, I like pips vs. script.

I don't know if this is psychological or if there's some kind of science behind it, but I've found that a lot of the dice I've had custom made (from Chessex usually) tend to roll the custom side more than any other. I'm not the only one who thinks this either. A bunch of people that I play with regularly hate my logo dice. I have both dice with logos on the 1 and on the 6 side - the former for leadership, and the latter for attacking! Normally, I put them aside and stick to the translucent logo-free dice which are typically more free from inclusions and seem to roll more consistently.

It very much depends on the logo, if it is something like a hammer, lightning bolt or similar, I would want it on the 6 as it has some meaning related to rolling a 6. If it is a company logo or something similar that I don't have a lot of empathy with, then I want it to replace the 1.

I like the logo on the 6 for my dice. I prefer the positive connection to success when the symbols come up. The only set I own with logos on the 6 are some Battletech dice. I certainly cheer when those Battlemasters come up! I do have some GenCon dice that have "Dh'O!" for the 1, and that feels appropriate. It doesn't bother me if other people have the logo on the 1 side, as long as I know ahead of the game.

I still have vivid memories of playing a game and was doing horribly. The new dice I'd just bought kept coming up with the special symbols which I read as a "1" because that's how all my other dice were like that. After the game I realized the symbol was on the "6" instead. I'd been rolling a huge number of sixes but I counted them all as failures. Guess it pays to check the dice before the game. <sigh>
