Black Templar Marshall

Hey everyone, I recently got a commission to convert and paint up a Black Templars Marshall using the old metal Vanguard Veteran Sergeant as a base. My client wanted him to have a cloak similar to the Sword Brethren, and a new head and shoulder pad which he provided. When I pointed out that he would still have the jump pack cables on his chest I suggested covering them up with a traditional Templar tabard. At this point I'm pretty much ready to begin painting. There is still a little bit of cleaning up to do, mostly on his shoulder shield, and I should have some better pictures of just the conversion before any paint goes on it soon.

Here he is with just the tabard sculpted. I also decided to give him a laurel since I had some left over greenstuff after one sculpting session.

At this point I made the basic shape of the cloak with a single piece of greenstuff. I used poster tac underneath it to hold it's shape while it dried.

The cape is done now and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. This is the first cape I've ever sculpted and I think it looks pretty dynamic. I'm excited to paint it.

Like I said, once I have worked a bit more on his shoulder shield I'll take some better pictures of the model with his other arm and backpack tacked on.

How did you smooth out the fingerprints? That step always frustrates me to no end! And it is a great cape!

Use a clay shaper, you can get them from art supply places, a well lubricated shaper with a end that isn't too stiff will smooth things out for you

I did use a clay shaper, but I also gave the whole thing a coat or two of liquid greenstuff in the end. This helped cover any detail that was super shallow, like finger prints.

I've never tried using the liquid green stuff this way. The only bottle I bought of it was a bit thick and went on more like a paste... not smooth at all! Is there something you can use to thin it down and make it smoother?

Will definitely give this a try! In the past I would primer then use thin layers of matte varnish to coat the green stuff and smooth out imperfections. Would be far nicer to correct these before priming!

You can also add water to milliput and use that in a similar way.

I've never tried milliput. Just the various Green/Grey/Brown stuff & Apoxie sculpt. Apoxie sculpt is the bees knees for sanding so you can create some really smooth surfaces with it.

Just caught the laurels added to the helmet as well. Very nice. Should paint up great!

That is glorious! It's all come together exceptionally well. It looks dynamic and the painting is lovely. Reminds me of the emperors champion with pose and double grip on the sword, and I mean that in a good way, nicely done!

I just did my own take on Sigismund, also using the Emperor's Champion as a base.
