View Full Version : First Round of a Tournament; Cheese Grater!

I don’t know much about tournaments. I think people should be able to play whatever models they want to. There is no way to force someone lacking in compassion to think about the experience of the opponent whose face they are smashing repeatedly. Instead I propose a way of forcing them to be considerate by thinking of themselves.

I call it: ‘the Cheese Grater’.

The first round matches opponents who are fielding units that are considered as ‘cheesy’. So round two, when your fluffy Black Templar army faces down five Wraithknights, you know that you opponent went through exactly what you’re about to.

It bans nothing but forces an opponent to look at their army list and consider how they would feel facing off against it.

What is ‘Cheesy’ is incredibly subjective, but basically it's the things that players are dreading.

Formulating which units have to pass through the Cheese Grater round could be used as an incentive to pre-register for an event. Someone commits to attending a tournament (puts money down) and then gets to add to the consensus of the ‘cheese’ they dread going up against. (Hopefully the top five can be presented before the event).

The day of the tournament there is a simple list of the top things players are dreading. The list has to be quantitative.

-More than one unit with ranged D-weapon
-Twelve or more psychic dice
-Four or more Flyers or Flying Monstrous Creatures
-Three or more sources

Anyone attending the tournament simply looks at his or her army, if it contains any of those things, then they are entered into the Cheese Grater. It could either pair opponents to face off against the same sort of stuff they brought (D on D, 12 psychic dice versus 12 psychic dice), or it could be a big soup of all the stuff players dread.

It can simply be used to tailor preferential play style for the first round. Forge world units against Forge World. Un-painted versus un-painted. Proxy versus Proxy. Beautiful conversions versus beautiful conversions. If you want to run Highlander, you can make it so Highlanders armies are paired up for the first round.
