I've posted a few of these guys before, but I finished quite a few Inquisition Characters done up in greyscale, and I thought they needed to be posted together. It's a really interesting theme to take to the allied force, definitely something to make them stand apart.

It was also interesting creating almost all contrast out of value, with only a couple spots with any color saturation at all.

I was just looking at some greyscale tutorials yesterday. This must be far harder than it looks. Nice results though.

Well, everything is a little harder than it looks, right?

Painting in greyscale is a little more time consuming because you need to mix a little more to get all of those different greys.

The real trick is to compose the mini so that the right things pop, and so that things have the right color values to convince us that it is the correct object. So, for example, the skin on the second one needs to look like skin, but also needs to look like it is made from a different material from the metal mask she's wearing.

Having the extra color does do a little for keeping the centers of interest working, although if you overuse it, it starts to get in the way.
