View Full Version : Sculpting berets

Being inspired by YorkNecromancer's troopers I bought some of the Statuesque Miniatures heads to make my own female trooper squads. But bare heads on military models kind of bug me so I want to put some headgear on them. I considered using the "empty" helmets that come with all the Guard, er Astram Militarum sprues. But these would require a lot of cutting of the heads and with the helmets on its actually tough to tell they're supposed to be female. And since they're supposed to be veterans I've decided on berets. Statuesque is supposed to be coming out with a line of heroic scale female heads with berets but there's no word on when that'll happen and I want to finish this unit by June so I'm going to try my hand at converting some.

i've come up with two plans. The first is to try cutting the berets off some of the new Tempestus heads and cutting off part of the female heads to make them fit, but this is a lot of work and may end up looking kind of janky. Or I could try to sculpt berets on them using green stuff. This is probably the easiest but my sculpting skills are next to nonexistent. Does anyone know a good technique to sculpt berets? Or know of a place that sells berets for other military figures I could make work?

The heroic scale beret heads should be out near the end of this month. Maybe early March. They are away for production moulding and casting at the moment, so it's the final stretch and we should be finally there soon. It's been a loooong haul.

Hope that helps. :)

Statuesque have a head sprue with berets up on their site but there are only 4 variants.

also Maxmini

or Kromlech's highlanders have a little pom-pom on the top but that can be fixed easily.

Col Corbane did some greenstuff tutorials (http://corbaniaprime.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Sculpting) ages ago here. Also a different one (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?194335-Green-stuff-berets&p=3488531&viewfull=1#post3488531) here.

Thanks completeHook those are good suggestions. But the Statuesque ones are "regular" scale and look like pinheads on 40K Guard torsos and I don't need any more male heads, I have plenty of the Tempestus ones for those.

Got hammer, that was exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks! Now I guess it's time to practice my sculpting a lot.
