Question in regards to flyers and shooting. Specifically, downward angle of weapons.
This came up regarding my Stormfang, where literally none of the weapons have a physical downward angle allowing you to shoot below the horizontal horizon of the aircraft.
Now of course the reality is it would be flying around and pointing downwards for a strafing run, but I've heard of some people trying to deny this, and use the measure from the muzzle as per BRB - this would make a stormfang mounted on the stock base without repositioning, virtually impossible to shoot anything but other flyers. Would probably apply to Storm Raven as well and any non-chin mounted weapons on other flyers.
Thoughts on limitations of flyer fire arcs?

rulebook stipulates that the vertical pivot of weapons is 45 degrees, meaning that each weapon can depress a total of 22.5 degrees. leaving a large area directly under fliers that they cannot touch

Looking at various dictionary definitions of vertical, refers to the latin and French word roots as meaning 'overhead' and the word pertaining to upright. I am not convinced about any depression of the weapons. Also, the book shows diagrams where sponsons cannot allow a shot that would hit the craft themselves. All the top mounted weapons of the storm fang would hit the nose with a depression of more than 1 degrees, so whilst I can see this is an interpretation, I am not sure it is correct due to being physically impossible.
Also, if this is the case, what is to prevent one placing the flyer on its base at an angle that permits a better fire arc?
(PS I am not combatively disagreeing I am interested in furthering the debate).

s. In the rare cases when it matters, assume that guns can swivel vertically up to 45º, even if the barrel on the model itself cannot physically do that!
Doesn't get clearer than that. you swivel in the vertical axis 45 from horizontal, so 22.5 either up or down.
EDIT: You can go 22.5 to either side as well, thats on the next line.
As to fliers on bases at the base....
The rules in this book assume that models are mounted on the base they are supplied with.
EDIT: But lets be honest, 7th is the most convoluted regurgitation of rules to date, it has so much rushed and unchecked Copy and Paste that the rules just do not work as they are written.
